With great pride we are celebrating 20 years of providing a safe haven to children at risk of
abuse and support to families experiencing a crisis. Each year over 4,000 children find a
happy, nurturing place to call home for a few days while their parents work to resolve the
presenting crisis.
In 1986, the Saint Louis Crisis
Nursery opened its first safe
haven for children in St. Louis
City. In 1991, Crisis Nursery
North opened its doors in North
St. Louis County; in 1992 Crisis
Nursery St. Charles began
serving the community; and now,
in 2006, Crisis Nursery West
opened its doors to serve the
western St. Charles region. The
Crisis Nursery organization now
provides safe, nurturing care to
over 375 children each month at
four locations.

What's New at the Nursery . . .
The Children & Family Services Authority
partners with Crisis Nursery to open
fourth site: Crisis Nursery West
Crisis Nursery West Nursery and Outreach Center opened on February
6, 2006, thanks to The Children & Family Services Authority of St.
Charles County. Thank you to St. Joseph Health Center, who is
graciously supplying meals and physicals for the children. We also
send out a HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who spent MANY
hours renovating the facility. It is beautiful! The very first night Crisis
Nursery West was full with children needing a safe haven.
Crisis Nursery West will provide emergency care for over 500 children
a year and follow-up support services to families.

Crisis Nursery Hosts National Conference
On April 7, 2006, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery will host "Real
Heroes" a conference by Dave Pelzer. This highly emotional
presentation pays tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to
making a difference in the life of a child. Dave is recognized as one
of the nation’s most effective and respected communicators. He
travels throughout the world promoting inspiration and resilience. He
has garnered commendations from Presidents’ Reagan, Bush and
Clinton. In 1994 he was the only American who received The
Outstanding Young Person of the World Award.
Dave has experienced a truly extraordinary life. He nearly died
several times by the hands of his mentally disturbed alcoholic
mother. Years later it was determined that Dave’s case was identified
as one of the most gruesome and extreme cases of child abuse
in California ’s history. At age 12, Dave was finally
rescued and placed in a series of foster homes
until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 18.
Even with all that against him, Dave was determined
to better himself - no matter what the odds.

12th Annual Charity Golf Classic Tees
Off This Year at Old Hickory Golf Club
Join us on May 15th at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters for a fabulous day of golf! Co-chairs,
Tom Morrell, Bill Shaner and Peter Wazlawek are putting together a fabulous tournament,
which is close to being sold-out! Designed by PB Dye, Old Hickory Golf Club’s course is a
golfer’s dream! To even the most novice golfers, playing Old Hickory is a memorable experience
that you are sure to treasure. The course has many distinguishing and unique features, including
an island green. You will be astounded and appreciative of the peacefulness and serenity of the
setting at Old Hickory. Anheuser Busch and Emerson are major sponsors of this 4-person
scramble which begins at 11:30 with a fabulous lunch donated by Hardee's and a shotgun start at
12:30 p.m..

A Little Something From The Heart
On February 9th the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, Neiman Marcus and St. Louis
Magazine hosted an elegant “ladies night out” at Neiman Marcus' Zodiac Room.
Joanna Temperato served as the Honorary Chair. KMOV-TV News Anchor,
Robin Smith, lead the festivities as the Celebrity Honorary Chair. Many thanks
to the wonderful Event Co-Chairs Roberta Cohen, Jocelyn Twist, Phyllis
Weiss and Debra Zerman for their help organizing this fabulous event! A heartfilled
thank you to Mark Fillion and Ellen Soule of Neiman Marcus for all their
hard work and talent that made this event so successful!
Event Chairs, Phyllis Weiss, Roberta Cohen, Jocelyn Twist and
Deb Zerman planned a GREAT event with Neiman Marcus General
Manager, Mark Fillion.
Guests had the opportunity to view informal modeling of the latest Neiman Marcus fashion trends; savored tempting hors d’oeuvres
and delicious desserts created by Neiman Marcus’ masterful Executive Chef, Greg Maggi. Guests were entranced by the exciting
new martini creations provided by Hypnotiq, and enjoyed the delicious libations donated by Laparita Wines and Pepsi. The evening
included: raffle Drawing for a spectacular Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti open heart pendant; entertainment by the cast of Menopause:
The Musical, and a fabulous silent auction filled with variety of lovely hand signed and decorated items from local and nationally
renowned celebrities including many from daytime and primetime television personalities and a variety of beautiful pieces of artwork
lovingly created by the children of the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery. Over 160 women attended and helped raise $11,500 to benefit the
Healing Hearts Program at the Crisis Nursery. Since art and play are the languages of children, the Healing Hearts program provides
art and play therapy for children who need help mending their broken spirits.

Crisis Nursery and Galleria Six Cinema Hosts Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire Weekend Premiere
Nearly 250 children and adults filled the theater at
St. Louis Galleria on Saturday, November 19 th for
an opening-weekend showing of Harry Potter & the
Goblet of Fire. Many Harry Potter fans came
dressed as their favorite character and received
special recognition. Movie-goers were treated to
Starbuck's Coffee and Krispy Kreme Donuts prior
to the show, thanks to the efforts of the Crisis
Nursery St. Charles Junior Board. Special guest
in the audience was Barbara Ramming, the
winner of the KTRS Harry Potter on-air trivia
contest. The event raised over $3,500 and all
proceeds from the Harry Potter viewing benefited
the Crisis Nursery Family Emergency Fund.

On August 11, 2005, more than 600 guests enjoyed an extravagant evening,
sponsored by Anheuser Busch and Monsanto, at one of Maplewood’s finest
restaurants, Monarch. This year we far exceeded our goal of $45,000, raising
more than $75,000 to benefit the children and families of our community.
Terry Egger, Publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, served as Honorary
Chair for the event. Crisis Nursery Board Members, Keith Carver and Pam
Strifler-Briles served as Event Co-Chairs for the fifth year in a row.
The “Celebrity Waiter of the Year” Award went to the dynamic duo of Dr. Robb
Fraley and Glenn Stith of Monsanto, who set an all-time record by singlehandedly
raising over $15,000 in tips for the Crisis Nursery!!! Our "Creative
Celebrity of the Year" Award went to Heidi Glaus, KSDK-TV Channel 5 “Show
Me St. Louis.” Also, in the top five celebrities, each raising over $2,000 were:
Mark Fillion (Neiman Marcus); Michael Staenberg (THF Realty); Don
Gerber (Gerber Chapel); and David Diener (US Bank). In addition to the
excitement of the celebrities, the evening was enriched by the presence of the
“Mo & Dawn” jazz band; a silent auction, and the ever-popular raffle.

In 1986, a star was born when the doors of the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery opened to help brighten the
lives of children in our community. On Saturday, March 25, 2006, a crowd of well-wishers will gather at
the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet to recognize and pay tribute to the Crisis Nursery for all the good
work that the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery has accomplished in the past 20 years.

Vice-Chairs, Dr. Sheldon & Judy Cohen, Don & Gretchen Gerber, Karen Prideaux and Ruth Smith are working with a truly
stellar dinner committee to create a night of revelry filled with delicious cuisine, an open bar and a complimentary martini bar, along
with continuous music by the best bands in town: The Fabulous Motown Revue and Arvell & Co. Guests will enjoy bidding on

will serve as Honorary Chair, and KMOX Radio’s irrepressible personality, John Carney, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies
for his seventh consecutive year. You never know who you might spot in the crowd but one of the stars that guests should be on the
lookout for is St. Louis’ very own American Idol, Nikko Smith!
Available at the Ball will be an exclusive jewelry collection designed by Diane Katzman to benefit the Nursery. The "Eggshell"
collection was created in honor of the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery's 20th Anniversary and features eclectic glass, pearl and sterling
silver jewelry accented by Swarovski crystal and cloisonne for a piece that is as unique as the tiny lives Saint Louis Crisis Nursery

A Message From The Director . . .
Dear Friends:
Have you noticed all the recent articles about child abuse? These past few months have brought
to the surface many cases locally and throughout the U.S. By seeing these stories in the news, we
become privy to the details and learn about the events that led to the abuse; sometimes it’s a
family in financial disaster, other times it’s a single parent with mental problems. But there’s
always a common theme: crisis.
When you read about these children, you may feel helpless and think it’s impossible to know what
to do to help, especially since the abuse has already occurred – we were too late. But if we did
know, what would we do? What would we do differently today if we knew we were saving a life - or two, or three,
or four - tomorrow?
This year marks our 20 th anniversary of serving children and families in crisis. I so hope you will take the time to pause
and reflect on the wonderful things you make possible because you care and support the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery.
I can think of no greater way to reward you for your care of children than by reminding you how absolutely important
you are to the futures of babies, pre-schoolers, and school-age children – literally thousands of little boys and little girls
hoping for safety, comfort and love. Seems so simple, doesn’t it? Basic needs that we expect for our own children,
but so many others go without. Thank you for helping us stay ahead of abuse and prevent it before it occurs…..

Holiday Hearts 2005
At the height of the Crisis Nursery Holiday Hearts campaign,
families in need were lined up down the hallyway. Families living
in poverty, who were unable to bring holiday joy to their children.
Enter angels like Shop 'n Save and Edward Jones, companies
who gave hundreds of toys and sponsored dozens of families.
During the 2005 Holiday Hearts Campaign over 1,720 children
woke up Christmas morning with presents under the tree. Thank
you to the countless sponsors who gave from the heart to bring a
smile to a child!
Best Friends Treasure Hunt
The Best Friends of the Crisis Nursery had a progressive
treasure hunt and meeting
October 25, 2005 in Webster
Groves. The evening began at
Copernicus Fine Jewelers
where guests learned about the
origin of precious stones and
jewelry maintenance, then on to
Ladybug's for fun and fashion.
The evening concluded with a
meeting at Llywelyn’s.
