In turn, <strong>Edmonton</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>s is committedto active participation on many committees andboards that contribute to economic development,transportation planning, charitable campaigns,tourism development, and other regionalendeavours.Setting Records:ITU Triathlon World Championship and The World’sDuring the summer of <strong>2001</strong>, <strong>Edmonton</strong> played hostto two premiere world sporting events: The World’sand ITU Triathlon World Championship. The World’s,which ran August 3-12, contributed to significantincreases in passenger traffic over the previous year.July and August showed a 14.3 per cent and 13.8per cent increase respectively in passenger trafficover the same period last year.As a gold level sponsor of The World’s, <strong>Edmonton</strong><strong>Airport</strong>s’ goal was to provide a positive first and lastimpression to our international visitors, and ensurethat the region used the profile created by TheWorld’s to promote future inbound tourism.Over 6,000 athletes, officials, international mediaand spectators arrived in <strong>Edmonton</strong> via the<strong>International</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>. The airport marked its busiestday ever on August 13 as passengers began theirjourneys home. That day, the airport served almost16,000 travellers — four thousand more than thesame day one year previous. Also, the airporthandled over 22,000 individual pieces of luggageduring the nine day event.<strong>Edmonton</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>s shared The World’s vision ofoffering our international visitors a hospitable,enthusiastic welcome. <strong>Edmonton</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>s developeda terminal building welcome program consisting ofguest services for spectators, information boothstaffing, and signage to greet athletes and visitors.Groups of volunteers worked together to ensure thesmooth and efficient management of arrivals anddepartures.REPUTATION OF EDMONTON AIRPORTSRemained the SameImprovedWorsened40%6%3%Don’t Know/Not Sure51%Net Improved = +45%Ipsos Reid, <strong>2001</strong>19
