2011 Summer Stretch Catalog26This course will involve nothing less than an assault on a professional studyguide for SAT vocabulary. We will engage in a myriad of creative games and exercisesthat will aid in burning these words indelibly into our minds. The bookfor this course provides tremendous visual memory devices, making learningdifficult words much less painful than a standard vocabulary text.Again this year we will be using the very popular rock music component!Rock The SAT makes learning SAT vocabulary as easy as listening to youriPod. I will provide the CDs, and students will be able to import the songs intotheir iTunes for listening well beyond the week of class!Please Note: Should you wish to enroll your child in both this course and myafternoon course(s), I will gladly supervise the lunch hour here at school. We will pay special attention to the art of self-editingand revision, which will require students to begin to understand writingas a process instead of a product. Availing ourselves of laptop and SMARTboard technology will both maximize the amount of work that the studentscan produce in our limited time and provide valuable practice in the use ofthese tools. With the growth of KCD’s wireless laptop program in the UpperSchool, these technologies have become a requisite aspect of student life. Thewriting that we do will mirror the format employed on such high-stakes testsas the new, modified SAT (which premiered in the spring of 2005). It is intendedto service the highly motivated middle school student who wants to get a jumpon the preparatory process. We will use the latest edition available from thePrinceton Review, covering as much of the text as we can possibly squeeze intoour week of study and review. I will teach and review the specific grammar andwriting skills that, according to the experts, will recur most frequently on theexam. This course is especially well suited as a primer for students who havereceived favorable scores on their sixth-grade standardized testing and plan totake the SAT or enter the Duke TIP program during the seventh-grade year.Instructor: W.
