Staff began distributing "Save the Date" post cards a few weeks ago advertising the May<br />
19, 2012 Kelly Cares 5K Run/Walk to the public. Kelly Cares will hold the event at the<br />
George Washington Middle School.<br />
Adult Activities<br />

Virginia Cooperative Extension staff conducted nutrition and other health related<br />
workshops for senior adults at recreation centers, schools and the St. Martin Seniors<br />
Center.<br />
The winter adult basketball program began in December. Staff <strong>of</strong>fered a preseason<br />
tournament that attracted seven teams.<br />
Staff work on senior programming continues through the Senior Programming Work<br />
Group and focus group meetings with seniors currently enrolled in our programs. Seniors<br />
in the focus group meetings have presented suggestions on how best to publicize<br />
activities and new program ideas.<br />
Thirty seniors participated in the new pickle ball activity held at Charles Houston on<br />
January 12. Staff is planning several more pickle ball clinics in hopes <strong>of</strong> generating<br />
enough interest to sustain a drop in play program, run a league, or both. Seniors in one <strong>of</strong><br />
the focus group meetings presented this idea.<br />
Staff is promoting a bowling league to see if there is enough interest to establish a<br />

Charles Houston Recreation Center staff collaborated with the AKA Sorority to<br />
implement a Seniors Holiday Luncheon on December 3. More than 200 seniors attended<br />
the event.<br />
Staff worked with the Successful Aging Committee’s Seniors Holiday Celebration held at<br />
First Baptist Church on December 16.<br />
Recreation Centers<br />
As <strong>of</strong> December 31, we have 1,294 children enrolled in our Power- On/Power-Up after<br />
school programs. Enrollment is up by slightly over 11% based on YTD enrollment at this<br />
time last year.<br />
Staff planned and implemented a variety <strong>of</strong> holiday events for children at all <strong>of</strong> the<br />
recreation centers and after school program sites in December.<br />
ARHA and Charles Houston Recreation Center staff collaborated on the third annual<br />
Winter Wonderland event. The event involved scheduled activities over a 3-day period<br />
beginning on December 19-21. ARHA distributed more than 3,000 donated toys to<br />
children on the final day <strong>of</strong> the event.<br />
We are collaborating with Job Link to provide job-counseling services at Cora Kelly,<br />
Charles Houston, William Ramsay and Lee/Nannie Lee Recreation Centers. This<br />
initiative is set to begin in February 2012.<br />
The Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter <strong>of</strong> Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Charles<br />
Houston Recreation Center collaborated to present the second Annual Youth Arts<br />
Symposium on January 14. Delta Sigma Theta and staff <strong>of</strong>fered a variety <strong>of</strong> visual and<br />
performing including dancing, stepping, drama, drawing, painting and candy making.<br />
The event was free.<br />
