About the University of Alberta Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine balances its activities among learning, discovery and citizenship (including clinical practice). A research leader in musculoskeletal health, spinal cord injuries and common spinal disorders (back pain), the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine aims to improve the quality of life of citizens in our community. THEIR SUCCESS IS YOUR SUCCESS When Catherine Leonard was a kid, she grew up with several friends who stuttered and saw the effect it had on their lives. Now a speech-language pathology (SLP) student at the University of Alberta, Leonard is doing more than just seeing the effects of the speech disorder; she’s making a difference in the lives of those who stutter. Leonard and fellow Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine SLP student Julie Sharp are working on research projects as part of their Masters in Speech Language Pathology program. They also worked as research assistants at the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) on an anti-bullying and teasing program for kids who stutter. Both were honoured with a $1,500 scholarship generously funded by the Alberta Elks Foundation. “I am immensely grateful to the Alberta Elks Foundation and Royal Purple for providing this award opportunity,” says Leonard. “I’ve seen how difficult stuttering can be for friends of mine as well as for kids I’ve met through ISTAR. I want to improve the lives of people who stutter, and The Dr. Einer Boberg Memorial Award has provided support and encouragement for me to do so.” The Dr. Einer Boberg/Alberta Elks Foundation Memorial Graduate Award in Stuttering Treatment and Research is a scholarship created in memory of Dr. Einer Boberg, the co-founder and first director of ISTAR. The award reflects his lifelong commitment to the advancement of clinical practice and the importance of research. 40 Two master’s awards or one PhD award are offered annually to a student in the speech-language pathology program or the rehabilitation science program at the University of Alberta. Recipients must demonstrate strong clinical skills and a research interest in the area of stuttering. “I want to thank the Alberta Elks Foundation for the generous financial support to continue pursuing my passion for research in the area of stuttering,” says Sharp. “Marilyn Langevin from ISTAR has a passion for stuttering treatment and research that is contagious. GRAND EXALTED RULER DAVE HURLEY DEDICATES KAMLOOPS ELKS LODGE 44 NEW HOME Grand Exalted Ruler Dave Hurley Presentation of Dedication Plaque To Exalted Ruler reading Dedication Mike Wolansky At a special meeting on March 31, 2011, Kamloops Elks Lodge No. 44 was honoured to have Grand Exalted Ruler Dave Hurley and his wife Audrey as guests of our Lodge. The evening started with a no host dinner followed by the meeting. Prior to the meeting GER Brother Dave dedicated our new home at 784-B Victoria St., V2C 2B6 in Kamloops. There were thirty one present to help us celebrate this occasion. Besides Brother Dave and his wife Audrey, other guests in attendance were from Merritt Elks Lodge No. 441; North Kamloops Elks and Royal Purple Lodges; President of the BC Elks Association, Deb Sallenback, as well as some of our own members and spouses. We would like to thank all for coming. As Brother Dave said under Good of the Order we should enjoy “working together, have fun in what we do, and be proud of who we are and what we do”.
