CANADIAN ELK ÉLAN CANADIEN - Elks of Canada

The Hanna Elks and Royal Purple hosted the Elks and
Royal Purple National Curling Championship on March
16 -19th, with action covering four days. There were 22
rinks entered to participate for national honors. While
this is a national event, only teams from Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories and Manitoba sent
foursomes. SHRL Lynda Nolan was present for the
opening ceremonies.
The first rock is usually thrown by a young child whose
family has in the past, received financial assistance
from the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children to
help cover costs of travel, lodging and meals while the
child is undergoing medical treatments. Austin Cretney
had to go to the U. of A. Hospital in Edmonton for a liver
transplant in June 2000. Austin will be on anti-rejection
drugs for the rest of his life but his future looks great.
It was 3 days of curling for the 5 divisions. Semifinals for
the Masters, Ladies, and Mixed were held on Friday
before the Banquet. The Friday evening banquet served
a dual purpose as it was also the Hanna Elks and Royal
Purple’s 50th Anniversary.
The Host Lodge presented Grand Exalted Ruler Dave
Hurley, a cheque for the Fund for Children and a cheque
was presented to Alberta President Larry Zeisman, for
the Alberta Elks Foundation. There was a silent auction
which made over $1,400.00 and live entertainment for
the evening. On the morning of March 19th the Men’s
and Senior’s division held their Semifinals. The finals
were held at 2:00 p.m. followed by presentation of the
trophies by Grand Exalted Ruler Dave Hurley and
Supreme Honoured Royal Lady Lynda Nolan. GER
Dave Hurley proceeded with the closing ceremonies
and welcomed everyone to join for friendship and great
curling in Swan River, Manitoba, next year for the 2012
Championship.
