10 <strong>Wingspan</strong>campus news<strong>October</strong> 12, 2009lccc.wy.edu/wingspanASGSales at coffee cartincrease dramaticallyLivestock judging teamgains experience this yearBy DominicBenintendeCo-editorThe LaramieCounty CommunityCollege coffee cart hassurpassed its previousyearly sales within thefirst six weeks of thefall semester.At the Tuesday,Oct. 6, AssociatedStudent Governmentmeeting Jerry Harris,LCCC manager ofpurchasing, presentedthe DailyGrind’s weekly salesASG which receive 5percent of the cart’stotal sales.Between the weeksof Aug. 28 and Oct. 2,the Daily Grind sold$14,411 worth of merchandisecomparedto $12,199 for theentire 2008 fiscal year.This is a 16 percentincrease of the yearlysales in the first sixweeks of the semesteralone.However, thecafeteria, which hadallowed students topurchase individualfood items in thespring semester,switched to an allyou-can-eatformat atthe beginning of thefall semester.Since that change,the Daily Grind hasseen its number ofweekly customers gofrom 710 customers atthe end of August tojust more than 1,000for the first week of<strong>October</strong>.The new “FlexDollar” Sodexoprogram, which alsostarted at the beginningof the fall semester,is not incorporatedinto total salesor the 5 percent thatgoes to ASG monthly.For ASG, this meansit has earned morethan $700 within thefirst six weeks of thesemester. The senatorsexpected a transfer ofthese funds into anundetermined ASG accountto take place atthe end of <strong>October</strong>.Harris said ASGwill receive 5 percentof the cart’s total salesas long as Sodexoholds a contract withthe college—whichis currently a 10-yearcontract.The 5 percentcommission allottedto ASG can increasethrough negotiationsif sales continue toincrease, according toHarris.“The beneficiariesare the students,”Harris said. “Thismoney comes rightoff the top with nostrings attached forASG to do whateverthey want with it.”Jenny Rigg, deanof campus living andlearning and ASG liaisonbetween studentsand administration,recommended the 5percent commissionat an ASG meetingduring the springsemester at whichHarris was present.“I wanted ASG toget this money,” Riggsaid, “so they coulddecide how to bestuse it for students.”The Daily Grind,which ASG originallyopened and managed,came underthe management ofSodexo at the end ofthe spring semester.Since the change inmanagement, therehas been a debate onwhat to do with theequipment within theDaily Grind had beenpurchased by ASGbut is now used bySodexo.“Sodexo hasagreed to reimburseASG for the equipmentthey are currentlyusing,” Harrissaid.Harris asked ASGto supply him with alist of equipment sothe value of the itemscan be defined anda rental fee can beagreed upon by bothSodexo and ASG.Rigg also addedthat Sodexo hasagreed not to holdcampus clubs andorganizations to theircontracts with theschool. Prior to this,Sodexo had requiredall food request fromclubs and organizationsto go throughtheir catering department.“Many of theseclubs just don’t havethe money to pay forfood through Sodexo,”Rigg said.Cody TuckerYou be the judge:In the first competitions of the season in Wichita andEldorado, Kan., the Laramie County CommunityCollege livestock judging team took second high inthe sheep division, while Haley Fox placed sixth inindividual sheep juding. During the weekend of Oct. 3in Casper, the team took seventh of 16 teams overallduring a mock contest. The judging team evaluatessheep, cattle and swine and decides which animalis the best within its specific class. This year’s teamis made up of freshman. Because team membersare eligible to judge at the community college levelfor only one year and at the senior college level forone year, this year is intended for preparation. Theywill enter their year of eligibility next fall against othersophomores. On Oct. 2, the team hosted a showfor high school students from around the state andsurrounding areas.
