This year is noexception, with theclassic children’s story“Charlotte’s Web”being interpreted withthe theatre department’sown uniquestyle. However, manyfactors set this year’sproduction apart fromthose of years past—everything is muchbigger than before. With a cast of morethan 20 people, it’sa wonder they’ll allbe able to fit on thesmall stage at LCCC’sPlayhouse.Something else newthis year is the newlighting system, which was purchasedwith a grant fromthe Wyoming ArtsCouncil. The artmoney was matchedby LCCC, allowing thetheatre departmentto invest more in thenew lighting system, opening up a wholenew array of possibilitiesfor them. The new lights includea scroll system, which allows light colorsto be changed bythe touch of a buttonrather than manuallychanged by a person. They are also usinga projector, whichDirector Dave Gaerhopes will be workingby the time the playstarts.Gaer, who is alsoa communicationsinstructor at LCCC,said: “I hope theprojector will be readyfor the play. It will bereally neat. The wordswill be able to appearon Charlotte’s webso it seems as if theymagically appear. Ijust hope we’ll be ableto use it.”In addition to thecolorful cast—whoincludes children asyoung as 7-years- old, high school studentsand, of course, LCCCstudents, LCCC Boardof Trustees memberBrenda Lyttle willplay the title role ofCharlotte.“Although this is anLCCC play, it is really ajoint effort of variouscommunity memberswho have all come togetherto get this thinggoing,” Gaer said.East High School’sdrama department isalso helping behindthe scenes. They havebeen working hardsewing and assemblycostumes for the play.Although muchof the focus’s on thenew effects that arebeing incorporated, the heart of the playis still the classic storywidely known andloved.“I think of all thescenes, some of theones that stand outthe most are thosebetween Charlotteand Wilbur,” Gaersaid. “They are twocharacters who arecompletely different, yet overlook thatto become friends. Ithink that’s the messagethis play conveys.”The production isalready sold out onOct. 23–25 and 30–31.“Charlotte’s Web”will be at 7 p.m. onOct. 22 in LCCC’sPlayhouse. Ticketscost $5 each.
