From leftare Erin Dorton, Emily Hamilton, PaigeGentry.By Cody TuckerCo-sports EditorThe LaramieCountyCommunityCollege equestrianteam, mostly madeup of freshmen, madea huge statement inweek one of competitionwhen theyplaced third overallon Saturday, Oct. 3,and second overall onSunday, Oct. 4, justbehind the Universityof Wyoming andColorado College.The equestrianteam rode into the2009 season ontheir small, flatEnglish saddles asthey participatedin the Universityof Colorado huntshow in Fort Lupton,Colo., on Oct. 3–4.The Golden Eaglescompete in zone7, region 1 of theIntercollegiate HorseShow Association(IHSA).The equestriancoach, Lanae Koons,took her team into itsfirst meet with highhopes and expectationsfor the newseason. ”My goal isalways nationals,”Koons said. ”But, Iwould say, one of mybigger goals would beto get as many qualifiedfor regionals aspossible.”Equestrianismis defined as the artof riding horses orhorsemanship. Inequestrian competition,the goal is toget on an unfamiliarhorse, go into theshow ring and havethat horse to listento every command.Two different kinds ofriding in equestrianare Western ridingand English riding.Western or stockriding is the moreAmerican type of riding.English or huntriding is the traditionalEuropean typeof riding.”Hunt seat is ourstrongest event,”Koons said. ”Theyhave worked reallyhard on that. We typicallywork harder onthat because it makesthem stronger forWestern [riding]. Theyobviously showed thatduring the weekend.”In the intermediatefence and novicefence competition,Paige Gentry led theway with a first–placefinish in the intermediatecompetition.Emily Hamiltonand Erin Dortonplaced both days inthe novice section.Hamilton finishedsecond and fifth, andDorton ended withthird– and fifth–placefinishes.LCCC was well–represented in theadvanced walk, trotand canter competitionwith five womenplacing. Leading theway for the GoldenEagles was ChristinaWorrell, who finishedthe weekend firstoverall.“Last year,Christina startedshowing for me, andshe won or placedvery highly in everyclass she was in,”Koons said. “I havehigh expectations forChristina.”Not far behindWorrell were KristaQuint and KylieGregory, who finishedsecond and thirdoverall respectively.Placing didn’t endthere for LCCC in theadvanced competition,with BreAnneNemecheck andElizabeth Harris alsofinishing in the Top 10.In the walk and trotcompetition BrittanyMetz swept the weekendfor the GoldenEagles, taking the topspot both days. AnnieHoag also finishedsecond and sixthoverall.The big storyof the weekend forLCCC, however, wasthe performance ofthe freshman Metz.“Brittany came to mewith little experience,”Koons said.”She has workedvery hard. I won’t sayI’m surprised, but Iwill say she took me bysurprise.”In beginning walk,trot, Worrell onceagain stole the show,finishing first overall.Right behind her,teammate HannahFernandez finishedsecond and third onthe weekend.In the novice flatcompetition, Gentry,Hamilton and KrystalBaker all placed inthe Top Five. Gentrytook third and fourthoverall. Hamiltontook third, and Bakerpicked up a fourthplacefinish. Dortonalso finished first andthird in the open flat,and Emily Grahamtook seventh overall inintermediate flat.The LCCC equestrianteam will competein 11 shows overall inthe 2009 season. The12th one is the goal:nationals to be heldin Lexington, Ky., May6–9. Coach Koons hashad at least one riderevery year qualify fornationals in her fouryearcareer at LCCC.She hoped to make itfive straight.The quest forKentucky continuesthe weekend of Oct.10–11 at the ColbyCommunity CollegeWestern show inColby, Kan. If weekone is any indicationof how Coach Koons’young team will ridethis year, the LCCCequestrian squadis headed for newheights.
