This booklet gives you all the necessary information about our selection andtraining procedures.If you would like to be an Examiner you will need to be a well presented pr<strong>of</strong>essional who isdiscreet and impartial. You need to be competent in written English and fluent in spoken English.You will also need to have pr<strong>of</strong>icient IT skills in email and word processing.You should have a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the Academy’s work and the potential to understand,demonstrate and apply the Assessment Criteria and Definitions section stated in the relevant<strong>Specification</strong>s. It is desirable for you to be able to drive and have access to your own car.Examining can be demanding physically and mentally, but also extremely rewarding. You willhave the opportunity to travel both in your own country and internationally.<strong>1.</strong> <strong>Person</strong> <strong>Specification</strong>Essential and desirable experience, qualifications and knowledge for RAD Examiners (formerlyknown as ‘Grades Examiners’) are outlined in the enclosed person specification.Each application is assessed on a case by case basis, in accordance with the essentialrequirements.<strong>2.</strong> <strong>Job</strong> <strong>Description</strong>The duties and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> an Examiner are outlined in the enclosed job description.<strong>3.</strong> <strong>Rates</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pay</strong><strong>3.</strong>1 What sort <strong>of</strong> remuneration can I expect as an Examiner?Examiners are paid on a daily basis whilst on tour and the current rates <strong>of</strong> remuneration areavailable on request. 4. Application and Selection ProcedureStep One: ApplicationIf you would like to make an application you should complete the enclosed Examiner applicationform and Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form and forward them to the ExaminationsDepartment in London by email or post where it will be assessed by the ExaminationsResources Manager and Chair <strong>of</strong> the Panel <strong>of</strong> Examiners. You will be advised <strong>of</strong> the outcome <strong>of</strong>your application in writing.Step Two: AuditionSuccessful applicants will be sent details <strong>of</strong> the Audition.Step Three: Training ProgrammeFollowing the Audition, selected applicants will be invited to attend an Examiner TrainingProgramme.5. Audition5.1 Where do Auditions take place?Auditions take place at RAD Headquarters in London and selected international centres.5.<strong>2.</strong> What happens at an Audition?5.<strong>2.</strong>1 RAD ExaminersThe Audition consists <strong>of</strong> six sections and will run in a workshop format with 1 – 8 applicantsworking together and individually covering the following topics:Part 1Demonstration <strong>of</strong> selected exercises, studies, dances and variations fromthe Graded Syllabus and Intermediate levelsThe assessors will ask you to dance any exercise, study, dance or variation fromGrades 4 & 5 and Intermediate Foundation levels (male and female).Questionswill also be asked about the Assessment Criteria and Definitions sections fromthe <strong>Specification</strong>s and their relationship to the syllabus. Discuss and set anappropriate free enchainement for Intermediate Foundation and Intermediatelevels.Part 2DVD observation, discussion and examining procedures explained.You will observe Examinations by DVD. There will be questions & discussions onthe examination procedure and analysis <strong>of</strong> the student/s performance.2 hoursFeb 2012Page 2 <strong>of</strong> 6


Part 3Coaching <strong>of</strong> studentsYou will be asked to coach students performing the set and / or free work.Emphasis will be placed on your rapport with the students and relevantcorrections relating to the Assessment Criteria and Definitions as stated in the<strong>Specification</strong>s. The students and pianist in this section will be supplied by theAcademy.Part 4Observation and written commentThis section will take the form <strong>of</strong> a mock exam. You will be required to askstudents to perform selected exercises from the syllabus. You will be advised toobserve and make written comments on specific points from the AssessmentCriteria and Definitions sections in the <strong>Specification</strong>s. The students and pianistfor this session will be supplied by the Academy.Part 5Report writingYou will be required to write a report on the students observed in the ObservationSection. The report should relate to specific criteria points as advised in theObservation and Written Section.Part 6Final interviewDuring this interview you will discuss your observations and report writing withthe assessors, who will also question your understanding <strong>of</strong> the AssessmentCriteria and Definitions sections in the <strong>Specification</strong>s and the role <strong>of</strong> anExaminer.Throughout the audition the assessors will observe applicants’ interpersonalskills when dealing with group situations. They will also monitor applicants’ abilityto take and act upon instruction(s) and to receive constructive feedback.5.3 When will I know the outcome <strong>of</strong> the Audition?You will be notified <strong>of</strong> the outcome in writing, including a report, within two weeks <strong>of</strong> the Auditiondate. If you have been successful at the Audition you will be invited to a Training Programmeand you will be given details <strong>of</strong> this in due course.6. Examiner Training Programme6.1 Where will this take place?The first part <strong>of</strong> the Examiner Training Programme takes place at RAD Headquarters in Londonand selected international centres. The second part involves the applicant shadowing anExaminer on tour. (Where possible we will try to allocate you to a tour in your country <strong>of</strong>residence).6.2 What happens during the Training?The training programme is approximately 4 weeks in duration. The first 2 weeks are spent onsiteat RAD Headquarters in London (or a selected International centre) and includes:Feb 2012Page 3 <strong>of</strong> 6


Practical revision <strong>of</strong> the Graded Syllabus and Intermediate levelsBriefing on all aspects <strong>of</strong> examination procedureDevelopment <strong>of</strong> your observation skillsTraining in the application <strong>of</strong> the assessment criteriaExperience in conducting mock examinationsObservation <strong>of</strong> live examinations, where practical.6.3 How will I be assessed?During the training programme you will be continually assessed by the Trainer(s). You will begiven regular guidance, advice and feedback on a group and one to one basis throughout theprogramme. In the event <strong>of</strong> your progress being considered unsatisfactory at any time you couldbe asked to withdraw or you may withdraw yourself voluntarily.The training programme includes a series <strong>of</strong> tests consisting <strong>of</strong> mock or DVD examinations atdifferent levels and assessment <strong>of</strong> the examination candidates against the Academy’sassessment criteria.If you are successful at this stage you will shadow an Examiner on tour. You will be advised <strong>of</strong>the length <strong>of</strong> time you will need to shadow an Examiner.All tests are marked by the assessor/s.6.4 What will happen at the end and after the Training Programme?You will be given the result <strong>of</strong> your tests (including your final test) verbally and in writing. If youare unsuccessful you may be asked to undergo further training. Success at this stage will giveyou Probationary Examiner status.7. What will I have to pay for during the selection process?7.1 AuditionAuditions are free <strong>of</strong> charge.You will be responsible for your own accommodation costs.7.2 Training ProgrammeTraining Programmes are free <strong>of</strong> charge.Initial travel to and from the Training Programme will be refunded at the end <strong>of</strong> theprogramme on production <strong>of</strong> receipts/tickets. All travel arrangements are to be cleared bythe Academy before booking. You must remember to bring money to cover your personalneeds for the duration <strong>of</strong> the Training Programme.Daily travel to and from HQ or the selected international centre is not included.Any travel incurred whilst on tour as part <strong>of</strong> the Training Programme will be reimbursed bythe Academy.Feb 2012Page 4 <strong>of</strong> 6


Accommodation is at your own expense throughout the Training Programme.8. Criminal Records Bureau ScreeningThe Academy has an obligation to safeguard the young people in its care, therefore anyoneemployed by the Academy who either comes into contact, or works closely, with students underthe age <strong>of</strong> 18 should obtain an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau,Disclosure Scotland or other relevant overseas authority.Before embarking on the Training Programme you will be required to make an application. Wewill send you the relevant details once you are successful at the recruitment weekend stage <strong>of</strong>the application process.If you already have a recent Disclosure (or equivalent) it may not be necessary for you to makeanother application.The cost <strong>of</strong> obtaining the Disclosure is met by the applicant. The Royal Academy <strong>of</strong> Dance isbound by the CRB’s Code <strong>of</strong> Practice for Registered bodies and has a policy for the securestorage, handling, use, retention and disposal <strong>of</strong> Disclosures and Disclosure information.Copies <strong>of</strong> the Code <strong>of</strong> Practice and relevant policies are available on request from the HRDepartment.9. ReferencesYou are asked on the enclosed Application Form to supply the names and addresses <strong>of</strong> tworeferees (excluding Royal Academy <strong>of</strong> Dance Examiners) who may be contacted by theAcademy, one which is known to you in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional capacity, the other personal. We mayneed to contact these referees by phone, please ensure that nominated referees are inagreement with you supplying their details for this purpose. Referees will be contacted once thedates for the audition are confirmed. We may also ask for a reference from the RAD National orRegional <strong>of</strong>fice in your area.10. Appointment to the Panel <strong>of</strong> Examiners10.1 Examiner ContractApplicants who successfully complete the Training Programme will be issued with anAppointment to the Panel contract (renewable every 3 years) and a letter <strong>of</strong> engagement(issued on an annual basis).10.2 What will be the conditions <strong>of</strong> my appointment as an Examiner?At the beginning <strong>of</strong> your appointment there is a probationary period, which will end, once youhave successfully completed 9 weeks <strong>of</strong> Examinations (this excludes Presentation andDemonstration Classes). During this time your progress will be reviewed by the Chair <strong>of</strong> thePanel <strong>of</strong> Examiners. You will be standardised by one <strong>of</strong> our Standardisation Examiners and willhave attended one <strong>of</strong> our Examiners Standardisation Seminars. Your appointment to the Panelwill be confirmed on completion <strong>of</strong> a satisfactory probationary period.You will be expected to examine domestically (within your country <strong>of</strong> residence, if viable) andinternationally soon after you complete the training programme, so that you can put your newskills into action as soon as possible. It is a condition <strong>of</strong> your appointment to conductexamination tours, which vary in length and can be from 3 – 5 weeks duration. The AcademyFeb 2012Page 5 <strong>of</strong> 6


will <strong>of</strong>fer you examination tours each year and your acceptance will be subject to the Academy’sStandard Conditions for Examiners. If you would like to see this document in advance <strong>of</strong> yourapplication, please contact the Examinations Department. Examiners are expected to examinea minimum <strong>of</strong> nine weeks per year.You should be aware that you will be required to examine during the Academy’s busiest monthswhich are between 1st February and 31 st July each year. You should think seriously about yourwork and family commitments and only make an application when you are confident that youwill be available during these months. It is also important to note that you will require a personalcredit card for all examining tours. It will also be your responsibility to have your own passport.If during your appointment your circumstances alter and you become unable to fulfil the terms <strong>of</strong>your appointment you may be asked to take leave from the Panel until such time that youbecome able to continue.
