Its houses are scatterediiTcgularly within its walls. The minarets of two orthree mosques, intermixed with cypress, groupe well with theneighbouring cupolas. The lake washes the lower part ofthe town, and had, when I saw it, a deep blue tint. Its oppositeshore is confined by bold barren precipitous rocks, andhills of sand-stone. The course of the river Jordan is tracedinto the lake at the north end, and again appears windiriginto a slow narrow stream from the south. Its length, accordingto Pococke, is fifteen miles, and breadth three orfour; but I doubt whether it is so much.Nothing denoted the existence of hving beings near it,except the houses; not a single inhabitant to bC seen, nor aboat on the lake.
