Philadelphia CFD ConferenceGeometric and population grids;what‟s new?April 2010Does CFD recognise the population dimension, perhaps in other words?Yes; the 1971 „eddy-break-up model‟ (EBU) for combustion simulation didso, postulating a two-member population: viz. burned and unburned. The rate of inter-mingling was precisely the engulfment rate.It solved the „Scurlock puzzle‟,viz.why did the turbulent- flameangle vary little with: inlet velocity,fuel-air ratio, temperature, etc.?The EBU is represented on TRI-MIX by red squaresand joining line. Engulfment products burn at once. The EBU model is still in (indirect) use; so theengulfment-rate concept has, with empiricalconstant, been (tacitly) accepted.
