Trainer Mick Campbell withBest Score (left) and proudowner Jeff Levitt.JEFF Levitt has been living a secret lifein the past year or so, one that his wife Helenhas only just found out about.Jeff has become a greyhound owner again, after a break of a half a dozen years or so.“Helen was not interested at all in the dogswhen I had them a few years ago and that’swhy I kept it quiet when I bought my latestdog a year or so ago,” Jeff told The Journal. But when that dog, Best Score (SurfLorian-Wisteria Bale) recently landed aYoung Guns final in Townsville, one of 11wins (to time of writing), Jeff just had to ownup.Pups For Sale40 acre property provides ...* Spacious galloping paddockswith dams and shade* Quality feeding and wormingprogram* Pups taught to lead at anearly age and handledregularly* All pups kennelled beforebreaking in* Excellent facilities availablefor whelping litters“I was waiting for the phone call to comethrough on the night of the Young Guns finaland was pacing up and down,” said Jeff. “Thecall took ages and finally when it camethrough I was so excited.”Jeff is no stranger to greyhound racing. His mate Neil Powell, who he plays golf withevery Tuesday, had coaxed him into eight ofthem in the past.“The first dog Neil got me into was Alintaand she won in 30.27 around Albion Park,”said Jeff. “But the other seven were no good.Helen couldn’t see the point of having them.“But Neil had got me in hook, line andZ ammit'sRearing andSpelling Farm'If you want yourpuppy to havegood nutrition, plenty ofgalloping andconstant care, take advantage ofyears ofexperience withinthe industry andgive it the beststart in life onour farm'GEORGEZAMMITFor any information, pedigrees, faxes, e-mails or photosContact George Zammit (07) 54266209Jeffreckons aYoungGunsvictory ishis BestScoresinker.”Jeff formerly ran the Fernvale Post Officewhich he sold recently and now worksshiftwork for Australia Post.“Neil’s a great mate and he told me aboutsome pups Peter Arthur had for sale by SurfLorian out of Wisteria Bale, the mother hadwon 22 races in South Australia,” said Jeff.“I bought one, John Rutherford reared it,and he is now racing as Best Score.”Levitt is an avid golfer, playing off ahandicap of five. His best score is two underpar around the Ipswich golf course.“It had to be a great name for him,” saidJeff.Dale Mortimer trained the dog originallyand he won five of his first nine starts, four atIpswich and one at Albion Park, including aflying 25.15 at Ipswich.Unfortunately, Best Score suffered theindignity of falling foul of stewards after anindiscretion at Albion Park over 520m. Dalesays that was more his fault claiming the dogis purely a sprinter and he should have kepthim to short courses.“I always thought he could break 25seconds for 431m at Ipswich,” said Dale. “Weprobably should have kept him over thatdistance for good. It was just ideal for him.”Best Score was sent north to the kennelsof Mick Campbell in Townsville where he haswon six races including the Young Gunsvictory, his 11th in 26 starts.Campbell is planning to come southtowards the end of the year for a racing visitand Jeff is considering keeping Best ScoreSudden AbilityAt stud …Proven GeneticStrengthBlack dog, July 03, 33.8kgSire: Bitability BaleDam: Pretty Meg(Damline of Hoppy's Girl,Sydney Gem)86 starts, 19 wins, 21 2nds, 8 3rds(9 wins Albion Pk)* 2nd Sth-East Qld Cup 429m Gold Coast* 2nd Clem Jones Cup 520m Albion Pk(race record)* 2nd Publicans Cup 520m Albion PkFee: $440 (incl GST)Contact Studmaster Jim Heddles(07) 34222547Young Guns (380m)Townsville1 BEST SCORE $2.40(Surf Lorian-Wisteria Bale)Owner: Jeff LevittTrainer: Mick Campbell2 FAWN SPARK $5(Surf Lorian-Heart Spark)3 SURFASAURUS $6(Surf Lorian-Heart Spark)Others: 4 Tomeels Lele $5, 5 AssassinWatch $6, 6 Serious Teddy $6, 7 Four WayRuski $6, 8 Horray Henry $3.50.Time: 22.62.CredibilityJust The BestFlying AmySurf LorianWest CapeBarrio FiestaDee BeeBEST SCOREWalkabout SidHead HonchoFitzroy LassWisteria BaleShining ChariotSiandra BaleLuana Balehere after that trip.“I miss him,” said Jeff. “I love watchinghim race.”Jeff is considering buying another pup, aSurf Lorian-Who’s A Bearing dog bred byMark Luxton.“This time Helen will be well aware I’vebought the pup.”Now that he’s got himself an extra smartgalloper in Best Score, Jeff should have notrouble convincing Helen it’s a wise move.BrilliantEarly PaceFrozen semen available in QldLittermates: Ashtonville 19 wins; ChiefAbility 13 wins; Pretty Kirbee 12 wins.Dam: Pretty Meg (33 wins, 9 at Alb Pk)The (October, 2007) Journal Page 18
