Help sought to preserve cockatoosBirds Australia is coordinating the extension of the Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo Recovery Project into the South Coast regionwith the help of regional group SCRIPT.The Project aims to conserve and protect these birds and their habitatthroughout the South West.Found nowhere else in the world, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo is one ofthree Black-Cockatoos endemic to the region. Classified as Endangered, thepopulation size of Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo has declined by at least50% in the last half century; largely due to clearing of extensive areas of theirbreeding and feeding habitat.Although seen frequently, the population is an aged one and with the loss ofbreeding habitat they are producing fewer chicks. When this generation dies outthe population will decrease even further. The birds have a very strong social structure and mate for life, living for up to50 years. They mainly nest in Eucalyptus tree hollows including Salmon Gum,Tuart and Marri and typically feed on the seeds of proteaceous plants such asBanksia, Hakea, Dryandra and Grevillea. The first stage of the project will focus on the nesting areas of the birds.Anyone who has had Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos visiting their propertybetween June and December and/or would like to be involved in theRecovery Project, is being asked to contact the Birds Australia, and help us in the conservation of these special birds.Funding is available for landholders wishing to help protect Carnaby’sCockatoo habitat on their land. For more information or to report nesting areas, contact Raana Scott, SouthCoast Recovery Project Officer on 08) 98420011 or emailr.scott@birdsaustralia.com.auMERV’S CONCRETE SUPPLIESPRE-MIX CONCRETESAND & GRAVEL CARTINGSITE WORKS - HOUSE & SHED PADS – DRIVEWAYSLOADER HIRE & GRADER HIREBLUE METAL & METAL DUST AVAILABLEContact MERV Ph/Fax 9840 1130Mobile 042 8 401 130A Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo- one of two white-tailedblack cockatoo species inthis area.
