CS COFDM Digital Video ProductsCobham Surveillance has introduced a new family of COFDM(Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed) digital videoproducts called SOLO, with domo technology at their core. Theseproducts support narrowband (1.25MHz and 2.5MHz) and full DVB-Tcompliant (6, 7, or 8MHz) channelisation. This line has specificallybeen developed for worldwide customers in the law enforcementand military markets, and for the manufacturers of UnmannedGround Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles who supporttheir missions.Digital technology has made rapid advancements in key areas overthe past few years. Notably the size, weight, power consumptionand cost have dropped by about 30% per year. Cobham now offersdigital systems that represent good value to users and are a betterfit for operational requirements than analogue systems. It alsodevelops specific implementations of COFDM technology for thepublic safety and military markets.Cobham Surveillance is committed to working with customers ondeveloping products that meet specific needs, and invites you todiscuss your requirements with its team. The benefits of digital transmissionThe migration from analogue microwave systems to digitaltransmission offers several key benefits to users:Better Performance - By using digital modulation andcompression techniques, digital microwave provides superiorperformance in non-line of sight and high multipath applications.Unmanned Ground Vehicles operating in buildings or urbanenvironments, as well as low flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, willbe able to transmit dramatically clearer video with less break up toremote receive stations. Covert surveillance cameras no longer needto have a clear line of sight to the receive location to have goodpicture quality. Unlike analogue, digital video picture quality is noisefree regardless of distance• Efficient Spectrum Utilisation - Digital video systemsoperate in a fraction of the spectrum utilised by typical analoguetransmitters, offering up to 8 digital video streams in thespectrum previously used to transmit a single analogue channel.Cobham SOLO products support 1.25MHz or 2.5MHz channelsin the narrowband configuration or 6-8MHz channels in the fullDVB-T compliant configuration. This compares to up to 25MHzfor a typical analogue channel. In addition, digital channels canbe located adjacent to each other without a guard interval.Analogue systems tend to bleed over their allotted spectrum, requiring several Megahertz of separation between channels at aminimum. As regulatory agencies worldwide reallocate spectrum, it’s clear thatdigital transmission enables more users to co-locate channels in anincreasingly crowded RF spectrum.• Secure Transmission Using Encryption - Digitaltransmission enables the secure transmission of video by usingAES128 or 256 bit encryption. There is no penalty to the userin terms of performance. Analogue systems don’t offer thiscapability as a feature. Analogue “cut and rotate” encryptionmodules are expensive, often doubling the price of a system, and not nearly as effective in securing the video data stream. Inaddition, they add to the size of both the transmitter and thereceiver. Digital offers true encryption with no additional sizepenalty. In the case of the Cobham receiver, AES encryption canbe carried on over the IP network• Set up for Internet Access - Many customers are lookingat how to access their video from anywhere, at any time, overthe internet. Digital transmission makes it easier to send dataover the internet, avoiding the need for a separate analogue-todigitalconversion. Cobham receivers have been designed to offerinternet connectivity by means of an optional TCP/IP Ethernetnetwork interface, accessed via a convenient RJ45 connection.SECTION 1 – Technology and ApplicationsFor further information please contact: domo.sales@cobham.com 03
