<strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> > Undergraduate Prospectus > iWelcoming Message from the DeanAssalamu‘alaikum Warahmatullahiwabarakatuh and Hello everyone.On behalf <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Faculty</strong>, I take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome all <strong>of</strong> you to the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong>,University <strong>of</strong> Malaya (UM). I am very happy to inform you that this faculty has been able to be a favourite choice amongstthose who would like to pursue their first degree in the discipline <strong>of</strong> built environment.The faculty was established in the year 2000 with four departments namely Department <strong>of</strong> Architecture, Department <strong>of</strong>Building Surveying, Department <strong>of</strong> Estate Management and Department <strong>of</strong> Quantity Surveying. I n addition, a newdepartment was <strong>of</strong>ficially established in 2011 known as Department <strong>of</strong> Urban and Regional Planning. In this respect, we areable to increase our <strong>of</strong>fer from five to six programs at undergraduate level leading to bachelor‘s degree, namely Bachelor <strong>of</strong>Science in Architecture, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Architecture, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Building Surveying, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Estate Management, Bachelor<strong>of</strong> Quantity Surveying and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Urban and Regional Planning.Apart <strong>of</strong> being accredited by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) and respective pr<strong>of</strong>essional boards such as LembagaAkitek Malaysia (LAM), Board <strong>of</strong> Quantity Surveyor Malaysia (BQSM) and Board <strong>of</strong> Valuers, Appraisers and Estate AgentsMalaysia (BoVEA), all programs are being recognised by several pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies both locally and internationally. The<strong>of</strong>fered programs are being recognized locally by Persatuan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and Royal Institution <strong>of</strong> SurveyorsMalaysia (RISM) and internationally by Royal Institution <strong>of</strong> British Architect (RIBA), Royal Institution <strong>of</strong> Chartered Surveyors(RICS) and Association <strong>of</strong> Building Engineers (ABE). To ensure all the <strong>of</strong>fered programs are highly reputable andsustainable, all <strong>of</strong> our undergraduate curriculums were revised to fulfil national and international standard. Pertaining to that,the duration <strong>of</strong> study period for all programs (except Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Architecture and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Architecture) wererevised from three to four years. We are now in the second batch <strong>of</strong> the four-year programs. In addition, our new facultybuilding is expected to be occupied next session to accommodate the present needs <strong>of</strong> all programs.With this mandate we are able to nurture and focus in developing pr<strong>of</strong>essional and competency skills required to face thedemanding world <strong>of</strong> the construction industry. Several joint programmes with international universities such as NationalUniversity <strong>of</strong> Singapore, University <strong>of</strong> Southern California, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Kyung Hee University <strong>of</strong>Korea are currently being organized annually to foster the spirit <strong>of</strong> sharing knowledge and culture. This is one <strong>of</strong> the bestways to broaden your global outlook and allow you to experience about excitement <strong>of</strong> living in another country, thus furtherpromoting the true spirit <strong>of</strong> globalization within the hearts and mind <strong>of</strong> our students. The faculty also greatly encouragesfield works which are part <strong>of</strong> the programme and are carried beyond our borders to promote awareness <strong>of</strong> issues whichare common globally such as sustainability and energy conservation.Our expectation is that each and every one <strong>of</strong> our students will be able to contribute directly and indirectly to thebetterment <strong>of</strong> the built environment. <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> > Undergraduate Prospectus > 1Background<strong>Introduction</strong>The <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> (FBE) <strong>of</strong>fers six undergraduate pr<strong>of</strong>essional programmes tailored to meet thenation‘s construction and real estate sectors‘ manpower needs. All these programmes are accredited at thenational and international levels. For example, its Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Architecture has been accredited withPart I recognition by the Board <strong>of</strong> Architects Malaysia (LAM) while its 2-year Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Architecture programleads to Part II recognition by the Board. The same programmes have also been accredited by the RoyalInstitute <strong>of</strong> British Architecture (RIBA, UK), leading to Part I and Part II accreditation respectively. RIBA‘srecognition is considered an achievement as it is the first programme in Malaysia recognised by RIBA and one <strong>of</strong>only five universities in East Asia.The faculty‘s Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Building Surveying, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Estate Management and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> QuantitySurveying have all earned their respective accreditations from the Royal Institution <strong>of</strong> Chartered Surveyors(RICS, UK). The same programmes have been recognised by the respective local pr<strong>of</strong>essional Bodies. WhileBachelor <strong>of</strong> Urban and Regional Planning is newly introduced in Academic Session 2011/12 which is in line with therequirement <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Town Planners Malaysia.Despite the fact that the faculty is quite ‗young‘ as compared to other established schools in the country,nonetheless, it has managed to attract the best achievers from high schools and matriculation centres. This iswell reflected by the high entry point requirements needed for candidates to be considered for intake. Some <strong>of</strong>our students have shown their achievements and competitiveness by winning numerous awards and medalsboth locally and internationally.Some <strong>of</strong> the faculty‘s graduates are employed in different parts <strong>of</strong> the world such as the United Kingdom,Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Thus, the faculty is at the forefront <strong>of</strong> training students with ahigh degree <strong>of</strong> international recognition in tandem with national aspirations <strong>of</strong> creating ‗Globalised Malaysians‘.The FBE <strong>of</strong>fers postgraduate programmes by research as follows: the Master <strong>of</strong> Science (Architecture), Master<strong>of</strong> Science (Building) and Master <strong>of</strong> Science (Estate Management). The Master <strong>of</strong> Real Estate and MSc. inProject Management programme is <strong>of</strong>fered by coursework. The faculty intends to <strong>of</strong>fer other new postgraduateprogrammes by coursework. Following it would be 2 other MSc. Programmes namely MSc. in ArchitecturalStudies and MSc. in Facilities and Maintenance Management, which would be made available from the end <strong>of</strong>2012.The challenges faced by the faculty in the oldest and most prestigious university in the nation have inspired it tobe regarded as a centre <strong>of</strong> excellence in the development and dissemination <strong>of</strong> knowledge and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism inthe field <strong>of</strong> the built environment, both nationally and regionally.

Students will be exposed tothe history <strong>of</strong> Malaysia‘s plural contemporary society. Other topics include the constitution, economicdevelopment, politics and Islam Hadhari in the context <strong>of</strong> ethnic relations. There are discussions onchallenges facing ethnic relations in Malaysia and globally with a view towards developing an integratednation.Learning OutcomesAt the end <strong>of</strong> the course, students are able to:1. Identify the basic concepts and theories associated with ethnic relations.2. Apply knowledge, concepts and principles on social and national integration.3. APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER AND EXEMPTION OF CREDIT(a) An application for transfer or exemption <strong>of</strong> credit shall be made by using the prescribed form thatcan be obtained from the main <strong>of</strong>fice. Completed forms must be submitted to the Dean no laterthan the Friday on the second week <strong>of</strong> lectures <strong>of</strong> Normal Semester together with:(i) the payment <strong>of</strong> the processing fees at a prescribed rate. The <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> Library is one <strong>of</strong> the specialsubject libraries in the University <strong>of</strong> Malaya Library network. Prior to 2003, the collections were kept in theEngineering Library, at the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> Engineering. At the present location, the <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> Library isconveniently located for access and is open to all students during <strong>of</strong>fice hours. The library is manned by two fulltimestaff members and covers a floor space <strong>of</strong> about 300 sq. meters with seating capacity for 120 students.The Library‘s core function is to support the learning, teaching and research needs <strong>of</strong> undergraduate,postgraduate students, and the academic staff and researchers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong>. However,it is also opened to other registered users <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Malaya Library network, subject to some limitation inborrowings.The collection gives priority on the learning and teaching programme <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Built</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> especiallyin the areas <strong>of</strong> architecture, estate management, quantity surveying, building surveying and urban planning. Thelibrary materials include both primary and secondary sources, such as books, journals, reference books,dissertation and theses, conference proceedings and electronic resources. All the computers are networked within the <strong>Faculty</strong>‘sarea network and are linked to the Internet.Centralised WorkshopA Model-Making Workshop that has 100m 2 floor area is available for students to make architecture models andconstruct small-scale objects. The workshop, equipped with hand and power tools for model-making with wood,plastics and metal, is open during normal working hours for use by all students <strong>of</strong> the faculty. Some equipmentare available for loan outside operating hours. One full-time technician supervises the workshop activities andprovides hand-on training and assistance to students.Centralised LaboratoriesThere are two centralized laboratories within the <strong>Faculty</strong>‘s building that support the lecturers and students inteaching and research activities.
