Seek out Michael Thomas’s championship-winning boots from 1989 and Charlie George’s FA Cup Final shirt from ’71. There are stadium tours too. Northern Triangle Building, Emirates Stadium, N5 1BU (arsenal.com) �Arsenal London Canal Museum Housed in a former ice warehouse, the Canal Museum celebrates London’s historic waterways, once a vital transport network. 12-13 New Wharf Rd, N1 9RT (7713 0836, canalmuseum.org.uk ) ��King’s Cross � BANKSY WALLS Islington Council takes a common-sense approach to Banksy’s graffiti art and only removes it where residents complain or find it offensive. Thus the area is one of the best places to spot the stencil masterpieces. Some pieces, like the figures saluting a Tesco flag on Essex Road, have been protected with Perspex, though sadly that hasn’t stopped various attempts to deface it. The ‘Tate Gallery’ piece on Martineau Road, opposite the Arsenal Stadium, has had to be restored several times – it shows a gallery employee guarding an empty frame behind a velvet rope, though Archway the frame sometimes contains the words ‘Smash the System’. Meanwhile you can spot various examples of Banksy’s rodent obsession: the famous ‘Ratapult’ on Whitecross Street shows a cat using a spoon-based seesaw to fling a caped rat into the air. And Exmouth Market is blessed with two Banksys, both distinctly sinister: one depicts an alien-faced man sitting at an outdoor café table; the other shows a robot arm reaching through a window to grab a child off the street. At Archway, the hitchhiker to ‘Anywhere’ stands at the foot of Highgate Hill, opposite McDonalds. www.islington.gov.uk/visitislington 27 HERITAGE & CULTURE
