I M P A C T<br />
Consider how fundamental fresh water and clean air are to our quality of life. A<br />
commitment to effective environmental management is necessary to protect these<br />
and the earth’s other natural resources. <strong>Starbucks</strong> believes environmental stewardship<br />
is an essential component of our community responsibility. Our mantra has become to<br />
minimize our environmental footprint on the planet and help to ensure a healthy environment<br />
<strong>for</strong> future generations.<br />
In the following pages, we provide a per<strong>for</strong>mance report on <strong>Starbucks</strong> environmental<br />
initiatives. In some areas, we are making good progress. And in others, there are<br />
opportunities <strong>for</strong> improvement. In either case, we realize that reducing the size of our<br />
footprint requires a steadfast commitment and the acknowledgement that it’s an ongoing<br />
process – a journey with no end point.<br />
E N V I R O N M E N T A L F O O T P R I N T<br />
Our environmental mission statement is the foundation of <strong>Starbucks</strong> commitment to<br />
environmental responsibility. We took this to heart in 2000 when we evaluated <strong>Starbucks</strong><br />
impacts using The Natural Step’s sustainability framework, and embarked on a course to<br />
reduce our footprint on the planet. This involved adopting specific measures to decrease<br />
waste and our use of energy and water, among others. We involved a strong crossfunctional<br />
team of partners to determine the best approach.<br />
<strong>Starbucks</strong> Environmental Footprint Team identified three high-impact areas that we are<br />
now addressing:<br />
• Sourcing: coffee, tea and paper.<br />
• Transportation: people and products.<br />
• Store design and operations: energy, water, waste reduction and recycling.<br />
We have established environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance metrics in all three areas, enabling us to<br />
measure our progress.
