-51The adoption of technology is influenced by climatic circumstances. In an adoption study in CentralMexico, it was found that barley farmers in a higher rainfall area were more likely to adoptrecommendations than those in a lower rainfall area. In addition, the technological components wereadopted differently in each area. The majority of farmers in both areas adopted improved barleyvarieties, but the use of herbicide and fertilizer was much higher in the higher rainfall area, whereresponse to these inputs was greater. In addition, farmers in the wet zone tended to adopt herbicidebefore fertilizer, while those in the dry zone, where weeds were less of a problem, tended to adoptfertilizer first.Adoption of three technological components in two zones of Central Mexico, 1975 and 1980PiiCiiit Of hlrmerazonetcomponentU8ectln1875~U8ed1n1980Ever used In1980Wet zoneImproved varietiesHerbicideFertilizer767746917462968265Dry zoneImproved varietiesHerbicideFertilizer291114611326611730Source: Byerlee and Hesse de Polanco (1986).
