Chapter 15: Managing Virtualized License Servers for File-Based LicensingSetting Up a Virtual License Server on VMware ESXNote • If the license server has to be moved to another physical machine, simply copy the virtual-machineimage and move it to the new physical host machine.Using a Bare-Metal HostidIn this scenario, you have made a request to the software publisher to run the license server on a virtual machineinstance. In response, the publisher has mandated a bare-metal binding to the Ethernet address of either theVMware ESX hypervisor or to a remote physical system that communicates with the virtual machine.Note About Binding in This ScenarioIf the license-server virtual machine is being hosted on a VMware ESX hypervisor, lmbind can operate either on thehypervisor or on a remote physical machine that communicates with the virtual machine (through theLM_BINDING_AGENT environment variable). Best practice is to use an LMB_* hostid, which can identify the hypervisoritself or a remote physical machine. (See Chapter 6, “Hostids for Supported Platforms” for details.)The scenario outlined in the next section uses the LMB_ETHER hostid.Binding With the LMB_ETHER hostidThe bare-metal-binding process for a license server on a virtual machine follows this general outline.Task:To bind the license server to the Ethernet address of the physical system1. Identify the virtual machine on which the license server will be run.2. Identify the physical machine--either the VMware ESX hypervisor hosting this virtual machine or a remotephysical machine; and download the Linux lmhostid utility from the Flexera Software website to this physicalsystem.Note • If you download lmbind to the VMware ESX hypervisor, see Installing lmbind for VMware ESX (with LinuxConsole OS) for additional details.3. Do either:• If lmbind is installed on the VMware ESX hypervisor, log in to the Console OS (COS), and run the followingfrom the command line of the COS:lmhostid -ptype LMB -ether• If lmbind is installed on a remote physical machine, log on to this physical machine, and enter the samecommand.License Administration Guide FNP-11111-LAG01 177
