Executive Summary - 2006 ReportThe Kawartha Lake Stewards Association (KLSA) is a volunteer-driven, non-profitorganization representing cottage associations, year-round residents and localbusinesses in the Kawartha Lakes area. Established to provide a coordinatedapproach to lake water monitoring, the Association has continued its program oftesting for phosphorus, water clarity and E.coli bacteria and expanded its focus toinclude research into various factors that affect water quality, including phosphorusand macrophytes (aquatic vegetation).Physical overview of the KawarthasThe Kawartha Lakes are a unique chain of lakes occupying a broad, shallow valleyrunning across the central part of Southern Ontario (Trent Valley). Fenelon Falls andBurleigh Falls divide the lakes into 3 distinct regions, which we can define as Upper,Central and Lower. Each region has distinct characteristics and vegetation patterns.The name Kawartha (originally Kawatha) is derived from an Ojibwa name meaning“bright waters and happy lands”. The lakes lie approximately along the boundarybetween the Precambrian Shield to the north and the overlying Paleozoic sedimentaryrock of the south. The waters feeding the Kawartha Lakes vary in composition as aresult of the diverse geology. Fluctuations in flow and their effects on navigationhistorically were addressed by the creation of reservoirs on the upstream lakes, firstby damming by the logging industry and later as part of the creation of the TrentCanal. The report, by KLSA Director Kevin Walters, discusses the history, geographyand geology of the area. Another article by Kevin included in the 2006 reportdescribes the diversion of the Mississagua River in the 1800s and its implications forBald, Pigeon and Buckhorn Lakes.Phosphorus monitoring resultsAs part of the Ministry of the Environment’s Lake Partner Program, volunteerscollect water samples in their lakes 6 times per year (May to October) forphosphorus testing. At the same time, using a Secchi disk, they take measurementsof water clarity. In 2006, KLSA volunteers sampled 41 sites in 16 lakes. TheMinistry’s Provincial Water Quality Objectives consider average phosphorus levelsexceeding 20 parts per billion to be of concern since at that point excess algalgrowth can make lakes unattractive for recreation.7
