It’s intended forparticipants who provide health care to patientsin a wide variety of settings, includingin-hospital and out-of-hospital. This courseis designed for certified or non-certified,licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals.This course meets the requirementsfor <strong>SMCC</strong> Allied Health students preparingfor clinical rotations. Students must purchasea pocket mask prior to class.Introduction to PhlebotomyThis course prepares individuals for entrylevelpositions in a health care setting obtainingblood samples from patients. Topicsinclude basic medical terminology, anatomy,laboratory math, blood composition,infection control and hands-on phlebotomytraining using needles, syringes, vacutainertubes and other equipment. Class meetsfor 30 hours of class time. Students are expectedto complete an additional 20 hoursof clinical. Time will be scheduled with theinstructor to do live sticks (usually scheduledwithin the 6 wks of class time). Studentsmust complete 15-20 live sticks to successfullycomplete the course. Prerequisite:Students must take the reading section ofthe Accuplacer Exam prior to registeringfor this course. A minimum score of 58 isstrongly recommended. He holds aBS of Business Administration from the Universityof <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Maine</strong> where he is also pursuing aMaster’s Degree in Adult Education.• Robert Hawkes is the Program Director/Chairof the Emergency Medical Services department at<strong>SMCC</strong>. He has a BS from University of <strong>Southern</strong><strong>Maine</strong> and a Master of Science Physician Assistantfrom the University of New England.2
