State Starts Construction SeasonDrivers, Workers Must Share HighwayWith highway construction andmaintenance season gearing up forsummer operations, extra caution isneeded on the part of both driversand highway workers. This year, asmany as 150 highway improvementprojects are expected across Nebraska.The Nebraska Department of Roads,along with their transportation safetypartners, the Nebraska State Patrol andthe Associated General Contractors ofNebraska, are dedicated to enhancingwork-zone safety for both the workerand the traveling public. They believethat increased worker training andenhanced awareness on the part ofmotorists and highway workers canlead to reduction of fatalities andinjuries.Since 2004, when 14 fatalitiesoccurred in work-zone crashes, thenumbers have decreased. The numberof fatalities in 2005 was 10, and in2008, the total fatalities were at 5.2009 annual data is not yet compiled.Technology continues to play animportant role in highway safety.There are 46 permanent changeablemessage signs at strategic locationsthroughout the state. With these signs,“real-time” information about congestionor incidents can be provided to alertmotorists farther away to take analternate route or plan accordingly.Nebraska’s statewide 511 telephonesystem is available to provide 24 houra day, year-round traveler information.By dialing 511 on a cellular or landlinetelephone, motorists are able to accessthe quickest, most up-to-date infor -mation about weather conditions,reported road conditions and specialtravel advisories. The 511 system isalso available on the Internet atwww.511nebraska.org.Highway traffic cameras provideanother tool for motorists in search ofthe latest traffic and road conditions.Currently, there are 46 snapshotcameras at various locations through -out the state that send pictures to theNDOR website for viewing.Drivers and workers must sharethe highway in times of construction,repair or maintenance work. Motoristsare reminded to stay alert whendriving near highway work zones anytime of day or night. Observe lowerspeed limits, heed all posted warningsigns, wear seat belts and avoiddistractions while driving, includingthe use of cell phones or textingdevices.Remember that highway workzones are more than a temporaryinconvenience.
