On a typical project,the work window coordination iscompleted within a matter <strong>of</strong> days,but due to the size and complexity<strong>of</strong> this structure, this schedulingwas over a period <strong>of</strong> four months.Throughout the project, timelyconstruction and maintenance <strong>of</strong>erosion control measures wereneeded in this area adjacent toAntelope Creek. Jointly, JAVA andthe contractor followed the erosioncontrol plan and numerousenvironmental permits to stay incompliance with agencies’ policies.The AGC/NDOR Bridge Con -struction Award recognizes qualitybridge construction in <strong>Nebraska</strong>.Categories that were consideredincluded: quality <strong>of</strong> workmanship,project management, innovation inconstruction or use <strong>of</strong> material,contribution to traveling public/community, environmentallysensitive, rising to the challenge –difficult job or situation, andsafety.◆Hooker Brothers Honoredwith “Top Clod” AwardThe “Top Clod” Grading Awardwent to Hooker Brothers ConstructionCompany, Grand Island, <strong>Nebraska</strong>,for their work on the Ord to Burwellproject. Others recognized includedJulie Budnick, Project Manager forprime contractor Werner ConstructionCo., Hastings, <strong>Nebraska</strong>; NDORDistrict 4 Construction Engineer KeithMeyer; and Project Manager GeraldWoodgate. Certificates <strong>of</strong> Merit werepresented to NDOR employees PeggyJackson, Inspector and Bob Rice,Surveyor/Staking.The 12¼ mile project includedrealign ment <strong>of</strong> two roadway sectionswith detour time allowances, realign -ment <strong>of</strong> five county roads, realignment<strong>of</strong> two channels, and five temporaryroads (shoo-flies). Approximately440,000 cubic years <strong>of</strong> earth weremoved.The project was built under traffic.Multiple moves were required on and<strong>of</strong>f the project due to phasing. Also,plan revisions changed haul distanceswhich required readjusting the balancepoints.According to award nominator JerryWoodgate, District 4 Project Managerat St. Paul, Hooker Brothers wasalways willing to adjust their scheduleto accommodate other contractors.They took pride in their work; alldetails, no matter how small wereimportant to them.
