The spate of new, luxury four-door sports cars continues apace with the launch of the rather 

beautiful Aston Martin Rapide. It’s a welcome development for those of us with families, who are 

not quite ready to trade our two-seater for an SUV. 

The Rapide has all the pristine elegance of a high-powered sports car, with the added space 

required to accommodate friends, children and luggage. While I don’t mean to suggest you can 

pack your life into the Rapide and speed off to Oman for a fortnight’s luxury camping, you can 

integrate this lithe beauty into your daily routine. 

Evolved around Aston Martin’s unique aluminium architecture, the car retains the same fluid 

proportions as the DBS or DB9. Signature design queues both inside and out whisper to the 

initiated that this is unmistakably a pure-bred Aston. While features such as the swan-wing doors 

(gull-wings are clearly not refined enough for this brand) mark it out from its peers. Powered by a 

handbuilt 6-litre V-12 that kicks out 470bhp, the Rapide has a Touchtronic gearbox to control the 

rear wheels, making road-handling dynamic and responsive. 

Built in a new facility in Graz, Austria, the Rapide is the first Aston Martin not to be built in the UK. 

Does that hurt its sporting credentials? Clearly not. After all, we are living in a global community, 

that just begs to be discovered with the whole family in tow, in your Aston Martin Rapide.

Autumn sees the city invigorated by cooler temperatures, fabulous parties and the arrival of 

the season’s new collections. While some catwalk looks don’t translate in their entirety to our 

sunny climes; fur jackets and leather gloves among the most ambitious for 25 degree Celsius, 

many key pieces are snapped up by Dubai’s voracious fashion lovers. 

Dior, one of the region's favourite brands, is adored for its lavish fabrics and statement 

accessories. This season’s ultra-feminine silhouette is bold in colour, accented with fur and 

leather, vertiginous heels and seamed stockings. It evokes the spirit of the 1940’s, and promotes 

a powerful vision of woman as strong and seductive. Necklines may be high and hemlines low, 

but the effect is overwhelmingly flattering to the female form, and perfectly attuned to the 

Middle eastern market where the ideal of beauty is both traditional and accentuated. 

For men, Dior Homme’s ANGLeS, referring to ‘angles of attraction’ is uncompromisingly 

modern; clean and elegant yet still playful and masculine. For those devotees of the brand, the 

classic Dior Homme narrow black suit makes a welcome reappearance. In place of the skinny 

tie is a multi-strand leather necklace.

Replaying those bold reds and blacks, Chanel’s Paris-Moscow collection takes its inspiration from 

the luxury and opulence of the Russian aristocracy. Imperial icons dressed in furs, pea jackets, 

embroidered dresses and Byzantinesque jewellery were all the rage in 1920 as Paris played host 

to wealthy Russians fleeing from revolution in their own country. The result was a groundbreaking 

collection by Gabrielle Chanel, resurrected by Karl Lagerfeld as living treasures in the seventh 

edition of the Métiers d’Art collection. 

In contrast, the Autumn/Winter 09 ready-to-wear collection is black, formal and austere with 

fleeting moments of white, jade and pink. Practical luxury pieces have removable cuffs and collars, 

delicate jewellery, tulle flowers and tactile fabrics. Straight and graphic, star pieces from the 

catwalk are already racking up waiting lists in Dubai. 

At Armani, meanwhile, all the various incarnations of the brand seem to be hot on everyone’s 

lips this season. Armani Prive, the brand’s couture label is omnipresent on the red carpet, while 

Emporio wowed with a fresh, young ready-to-wear collection in a sharp palette of greys, blacks 

and navys. On the more conservative side, Giorgio Armani’s menswear collection provided just the 

right level of distinction with beautiful classic tailoring, enlivened with experimental use of fabric. 

Bringing the city closer to its favourite designers, many of the most established luxury brands 

launch spectacular flagship boutiques in Dubai this month. Chanel, Dior, Giorgio Armani and 

Louis Vuitton are among the many to showcase international ready-to-wear, accessory and

Dubai is home to what is arguably the widest selection 

of engagement, wedding and eternity rings in the world.

There’s nothing like the story of a romantic wedding proposal – especially when it doesn’t quite 

go as planned. A gentleman recently came into Dubai Mall’s Gold Souk, and left with a beautiful 

solitaire diamond engagement ring. He then booked a helicopter ride, bought a giant tin of white 

paint and daubed the words “Will you?” on the top of his Jumierah villa, with the intention of 

proposing mid-air. He didn’t anticipate a sudden sandstorm whipping up and obliterating the view 

of his proposal. Fortunately, the couple are happily married today. 

When it comes to buying engagement rings there are two kinds of men, says Joey Hardy, a senior 

jewellery specialist at Sotheby’s. “Many bold men buy a ring prior to the proposal. This shows a big 

commitment, and many even delay proposing until they can bid for and secure the perfect ring. 

Other men prefer accompanying their fiancées to choose the ring after getting engaged.” 

Today’s most popular model - the classic solitaire with a round brilliant - came to prominence 

in 1477, when Archduke Maximillian presented his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, with the first 

recorded diamond engagement ring in history. 

The current vogue in rarefied circles is for larger and more intricate rings. At Graff, where 

creating a single piece involves several hundred hours of handiwork, engagement rings are 

becoming increasingly bigger, according to a spokesperson. A new 11-carat cushion cut pink 

diamond at De Beers is sure to dazzle any prospective spouse. Leviev and Tiffany, meanwhile, 

are reporting demand for exceptionally rare coloured diamonds and stones. Purple, pink, yellow 

or even padparadscha sapphires are now in fashion, according to Tiffany Group Vice President 

Melvyn Kirtley.

Lifestyle is an important factor when choosing diamond jewellery for everyday wear. “My diamond 

ring is a rub over as opposed to a claw setting,” says Sotheby’s Hardy. “But I’m constantly getting 

on and off my motorbike, so I need a robust style.” 

If jewellery design reflects the culture we live in, perhaps it’s hardly surprising that De Beers are 

noticing increasing requests for friendship rings. Hirsh recently introduced a double row-style 

eternity ring for a client who had twins. Blue sapphires are increasingly creeping into Moussaieff’s 

engagement rings, while celebrity designer Stephen Webster says brides now routinely give 

grooms personally engraved pieces. Webster famously made Christina Aguilera’s husband a 

‘Wedlock’ pendant instead of a traditional wedding ring. 

The most expensive engagement ring ever given is thought to be the US$2 million, 12-carat 

emerald cut solitaire Donald Trump presented to third wife Melania, made by Graff. Should you 

too be thinking of making a splash, Leviev’s flawless 52.29 carat emerald cut diamond, flanked by 

four baguettes totalling 5.23 carats and set in platinum, should impress. Love may not always last

When you buy a Maserati, you are usually in the market for unequivocal Italian styling, understated 

luxury and dynamic performance. While all of this remains true for the Quattraporte’s new GT S, 

this sports sedan is more ageing rock star than stately diplomat. 

Deploy the innocent-looking sports button on the main dash, and the low hum of the V8 4.7-litre 

engine becomes a stadium roar. Suddenly, all eyes on the road, the pavement and the beach halfa-mile 

away, are turned in your direction. The secret is the sports exhaust that’s controlled by 

pneumatic valves. In closed mode, the engine is eerily quiet. Once those little valves are released, 

so is the full force of your 433bhp engine. 

Despite the raw sonics eminating from the twin oval tailpipes, inside the car you are cosseted in 

the Italian ideal of utter comfort. Soft, licquorice leather, peforated Alcantara M-design seats and 

a tactile, suede steering wheel are seductive touches. Longer shift paddles on the wheel and a 

new digital rpm display make driving and staying under the radar of the traffic cameras that much 

easier. With classic design and precious few fiddly gadgets and buttons, there is little to distract 

you from the thrill of the drive. 

Despite the warm fuzzy feeling generated in the Maserati’s cozy cabin, the GT S is a true 

performance car, equipped with optimal dynamic balance and the latest automatic gear-shifting 

softwear. The six-speed transmission is tuned to the sports ethic of the Sport GT S in what’s 

called the MC-Auto Shift. And before you ask, this is not an option from a popular fast food outlet, 

but one that takes you from 0 to 100km in only 5.1 seconds. By holding down the break pedal 

while pushing the accelerator to maximum revs, releasing the break provides enough thrust for a 

superfast start, or a quick getaway. But remember not to try this at home. Maserati advise you to 

attempt this only under controlled conditions at Dubai’s Autodrome, for example. 

Now that Dubai traffic has been consumed by the credit crunch, and we are able to traverse the 

city in the time it actually takes to drive from A to B, there’s no real need for queue hopping 

or clever manoevers. In the GT S, however, you’ll want to find a reason. Everything in this car 

is focused on the drive experience. The handling is deft and responsive and the balance strong 

and agile. A new suspension set-up reduces the ground clearance, giving you full grip, and 

command of every snake in the road. you can really put this car through its paces with complete 

confidence. Unlike some gadget-conscious sports cars that practically drive themselves, the 

Maserati puts you fully in charge.

Today, Audemars Piguet is considered one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world. 

It is a long way from the little enterprise set up by 23-year-old Jules Audemars and 21-year-old 

Edward-August Piguet in 1889. The two watchmakers were dedicated to their craft, producing all 

components in-house and assembling each watch by hand. The result were flawless timepieces in 

demand by jewellery houses such as Tiffany & Co. 

Nearly a century after they began, Audemars Piguet debuted what was to become their signature 

watch, the “Royal Oak”. Designed by Gerald Genta, it has an octagonal shape, steel edges and 

hexagonal screws were uniquely powerful and elegant. Named after the hollowed out tree where 

King Charles II hid to escape his pursuers, the Royal Oak sports watch has been reincarnated in 

various guises. One of the latest and most popular in the Middle East is the diamond studded Royal 

Oak Offshore Ladies’ Chronograph (pictured on left).

Many jewellers now adopt the title of “jeweller to the stars”, but Harry Winston was the uncut 

original. “If I could, I would attach the diamonds directly onto a woman’s skin,” he said in his most 

famous quote. 

Harry’s passion was eternally fixed to the single, unadorned gem: its luster and purity, brilliance 

and fire. Inspired by this, he allowed his precious diamonds to sparkle, uninhibited by heavy or 

elaborate settings, using almost-invisible, three-dimensional platinum wire to construct free 

flowing, natural patterns and a new, modern way for women to wear jewels. 

Harry passed away in 1978, but the spirit of his heritage endures in the glamour and romance 

of today’s collections. The ‘magnificent obsession’ with ultra-rare, exceptional gems led him to 

unearth the world’s most celebrated rough diamonds; the 726-carat Jonker and the 970-carat 

Star of Sierra Leone.

Abu Dhabi can be likened to Dubai’s older, more mature brother. Established, wealthier and primed 

for the future. The oil-rich capital city of the UAE may not grab as many headlines as the party 

capital, but with the development of a new cultural district, filled with world-class museums, Abu 

Dhabi is destined for a different kind of stardom. 

One of most spectacular sites in Abu Dhabi is the new Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque, 

or the Grand Mosque. Standing 85 meters high and stretching for over 22,000 square meters, it 

is the third largest, and some would say most beautiful, modern Mosque in the world. Inspired by 

Moroccan architecture, it features 80 white marble domes, more than 7000 meters of artificial 

lakes, over a thousand grand pillars, gem and pearl-encrusted walls, 24-carat gold floor tiles and 

the largest chandelier ever built. 

In close competition for sheer scope and ambition is the famous Emirates Palace. Not the Sheikh’s 

residence, this is actually a gigantic, white marble hotel with 400 rooms and suites. This is not 

to say that the ruling family do not visit the hotel. In fact there are entire floors dedicated to 

Presidential, Ruler and Royal Suites that are inaccessible to other guests, with private driveways 

and entrances.

For many residents and visitors, the most welcome development is on Saadiyat Island, 700m off 

the coast of Abu Dhabi. Translating as ‘island of happiness’, it is currently being transformed into 

the country’s cultural district. First of the five Pritzker prize-winning architects to complete his 

contribution to the district is Frank Gehry, whose Guggenheim Museum promises to rival Bilbao’s. 

Just as ground-breaking is Zaha Hadid’s Performing Arts Centre and the Louvre, which will house 

new and traveling exhibitions from around the world in its astounding 6000m2 space. 

But this November, all eyes are bound to be on the brand new, state-of-the-art yas Marina Circuit, 

which plays host to the final race of the Grand Prix’s World Championship season. It’s the first 

time the capital has hosted Formula 1, and in true local style, the track and grounds are the most 

beautiful, innovative and luxurious ever built. 

Designed by Herman Tilke, the yas Marina is the only circuit to accommodate an underground 

pit lane, and a 500-room, five-star hotel that straddles the racetrack. Residents of the hotel will

name, meaning ‘Market of the Sailor’ derives from the traditional souk-style architecture; the

Compared to the real, bustling souks that surround the Creek, what the Al Bahar lacks in 

authenticity, it more than makes up for in entertainment value. There are over 100 outlets that 

include quirky design boutiques, handmade jewellery stalls and Arabian handicrafts all clustered 

within view of the Burj Dubai’s enormous lake. 

The most popular attractions are proving to be the new restaurants, bars and cafes; perfect for 

enjoying a strong Arabic coffee and a little people-watching, or brunch with friends and family. 

The place du jour is the Rivington Grill. Opened by the Caprice group who own celebrity haunt, 

The Ivy, it brings its hallmarks of quality and simplicity in food, as well as a quintessentially British 

style of design and service. 

Celebrated French brasserie Margaux have also opened an outlet at the Souk Al Bahar, serving 

classic French Mediterranean cuisine. The chef Julian Mercier trained with legendary chef Alain 

Ducasse, and transforms traditional flavours with modern cooking techniques. With an 800 strong 

wine list including rare and vintage varieties, expertly designed to compliment the dishes, you are 

treated to a real French culinary experience. 

After dinner, the place to be seen is new club Hive. And if the retail therapy and amazing food and 

glamorous nightlife fail to impress, then you can always take a ringside seat at the Burj Lake to see 

the spectacle of the world’s biggest dancing fountain. It has to be seen to be believed.

Luxos uncovers the latest generation of galleries 

to open in the emirates. 


With the rising popularity of modern and contemporary Arab art, buyers and dealers from across 

the globe descend on Dubai, hunting for the next big thing. The city itself has become a creative 

hub for the Middle East where rich patrons continue to feed the market, allowing it to grow ever 

larger and more diverse; funding new ways of seeing and experiencing art. 

As a hotbed of talent, artists from across the Gulf, North Africa, the Levant and Iran are being 

successfully filtered through Dubai’s galleries. From just a handful of young, hopeful art lovers 

back in 2004 has grown a multitude of white-walled spaces providing contemporary local and 

international artists a home for their work. 

While the world is already versant with auction houses such as Christies, who have done much to 

boost the profile of Dubai as an art capital, events such as Art Dubai have given local talent an 

opportunity to expose their work to an international audience. Much has already been gained in 

the emirates, and much more is yet to come with the emergence of a new generation of galleries 

across the UAE. 

The Ayyam Gallery carved its reputation in Damascus in 2006, launching the careers of young 

Syrian artists, giving local talent a voice through art prizes, exhibitions and publishing. Former 

financier and art lover Khaled Samawi founded the gallery as a way to display his private collection 

of then more than 300 artworks. It has grown beyond its borders and found a second home in 

Dubai. Representing over 20 contemporary Syrian artists, Samawi believes that their work holds 

an equivalent value in the international market, and that it is only a matter of time before European 

art buyers realize the deep value inherent in modern Middle Eastern art. Visit the website to 

review current exhibitions and take a trip to the gallery to judge for yourself. 

The Ayyam is typical of the new wave of artspaces recently opened in the city, whereas the 

Basement gallery and Carbon 12, both acknowledge local artistry but in addition invite artists 

from London and New york to exhibit well known works. Carbon 12 cites itself as the region’s 

first truly international art space hosting ten exhibitions each year, opening each one with a 

vernissage. Their highly successful first show included works by Thierry Feuz, Tor Magnus and 

Katherine Berhnardt. 

Even the denizens of style at Boutique One have amalgamated a bijou gallery within their 

minimalist fashion outlet that overlooks the sea. Managed by renowned Lebanese curator Fadi 

Mogabgab, the gallery has high ambitions for its future. It brings together the stars of Occidental 

and Oriental art, exhibiting unique talents such as Eric Bottero, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and 

Marwan Sahmarani.

On the 9th day of the 9th month 2009, a group of passengers will be taken across Dubai for the 

very first time, by train. 

While residents remain permanently divided on the merits of actual public transport over the 

luxury of private travel, the metro will revolutionise the way people explore the city. Visitors and 

locals played witness as futuristic pod-like stations began to appear in commuter hotspots, linking 

the vast stretches of concrete track that snake through through the heart of the city. 

Modelled on the transport systems of London, Paris, Berlin, Hong Kong and Singapore, every 

station will give access to air-conditioned walkways and bridges, park and ride services and taxi 

stands to ease the comfort of traveling during the hotter months. 

The Dubai Metro’s 52km Red Line will roll its shiny blue bullet trains onto the track ahead of the 

Green Line in 2010, instantly propelling this former fishing village into a cosmopolitan future.

There are not many restaurants in the world that 

involve taking a submarine ride into the deep to 

reach your table, but then again, Al Mahara isn’t 

your average dining establishment. Located on 

the ground floor of the seven-star Burj Al Arab

simulator), the sub-aquatic theme is all-pervading: 

diners look upon a vast aquarium, filled with
