Dear Reader, 

Oh the glamour of winter in the desert. Film festivals, sailing events, golf 

championships, motor shows and all the opulent hotels decked out for the party 

season. And there is much to celebrate. The end to a challenging 2009 and the 

promising start to a new year and a different era for luxury. As traditional ideas of 

luxury give way to new priorities for wealthy consumers, brands continue to offer 

more bespoke and socially conscious services to their valued customers. 

Eco-travel, haute brand collaborations, couturiers crowned as movie stars, the 

latest recession-proof jewels and a new Rolls Royce that’s meaner and greener than 

ever are all part of the movement to satisfy a new, more enlightened consumer.

Imagine a gentleman who knows style and quality; someone who has great 

expectations of his daily attire and particularly during special occasions. Such a man 

gives us an impression of what Brioni is about. named after the island of Brioni on 

the Adriatic Sea where elite sports like golf, horsemanship and polo were popular, the 

very name of the brand evokes an era of excellence. 

Brioni was founded under extraordinary circumstances. In the 50s and 60s, Rome 

became increasingly international with travellers and American cinema. It was also 

a time when people started to experiment with new fashion. Among the growing 

businesses in the region was Sartoria Brioni. A small atelier with just 20 tailors, its fame 

grew significantly as Hollywood stars championed the brand and brought with them 

the international spotlight. Brioni was born at the right time, in the right place, and with 

the right people. Today, over 400 master tailors work at its factory in Abruzzo.

The relationship between fashion and film has long been a symbiotic one. It is the 

tale of two mighty industries uniting in pursuit of the elusive haute consumer. While 

celebrity endorsements like those offered by Gwyneth Paltrow for Tod’s or Monica 

Bellucci for Cartier have become commonplace, the big fashion houses are now 

upping the stakes by investing in their own big budget productions. 

Back in 2007, when Louis vuitton released a film about their relationship with 

designer Marc Jacobs, viewers were given unfettered access to ateliers and fashion 

shows. This kick-started a vogue for fashion documentaries that has culminated in 

the controversial 2009 fly-on-the-wall documentary valentino: “The Last Emperor” 

which eviscerates the world of the aging couturier just as his empire is collapsing 

around him. 

The film centers on valentino's relationship with his business partner Giancarlo 

Giammetti as they hop from palace to yacht via their lavish private jet, accompanied

The relationship between cars and watches traces 

its origins to the 80s, when watch brands became 

part of a side collection promoted by individual car 

manufacturers. By the 90s, the watch industry grew 

dramatically, and watch brands started to play a more 

major role. Instead of being a spin-off for car brands, 

watch manufacturers now successfully incorporate 

automotive engineering process into their timepieces. 

The two work hand in hand, offering a dynamic, 

sophisticated experience to the car-and-watch owner. 

The AMvOX2 Rapide Transponder for example, 

launched by Jaeger-LeCoultre is a chronograph created 

in collaboration with Aston Martin, the culmination 

of 18 months of painstaking research. The watch

Panerai’s limited edition “Ferrari Engineered by Officina Panerai” collection 

features a case in signature red and the Prancing Horse logo. Possessing the 

Ferrari's sleek silhouette, this watch is also equipped with the Panerai OP XII 

calibre. The list of characteristics includes 28,800 alternations per house, 46hour

The Rolls-Royce Ghost was first unveiled in Frankfurt in September ’09. The company’s 

most hotly anticipated production model had been rumoured in Paris nearly three years ago 

when it was codenamed the RR4. Sketches were tentatively released in 2008, showing the 

new model to be smaller than the Phantom and freer in style; a contemporary version of the 

classic and much loved Rolls-Royce. 

This Ghost is unique – a new 6.6 litre v12 delivers 563 bhp and glides along on a smart 

air suspension system that is so seamless you feel as though you’re floating above ground 

– bearing justice to its name. The heritage cues stem from the spirit of the 1930’s and the 

golden age of the motorcar. 

Rolls-Royce’s intention for this calm, new frontrunner is to broaden the brand’s appeal. And 

with a price tag between 200,000 and 300,000 Euros, this is sure to bring this elite dream a

Traditional craftsmanship harks back to a more romantic era with frosted lamps, chrome door 

handles, violin key switches and eyeball air vents. you can even choose to have your shag-pile 

floor topped with lambswool mats that long for you to kick off your shoes and drive barefoot. 

Rear-hinged coach doors close at the push of a button and a panorama sunroof that extends 

for the full length of the roof gives you as much Dubai sunshine in your car as you desire.

Optional, individual lounge seating has a massage function and perforated leather covers to

any surface; with the help of traction, stability and brake controls that work together via an 

integrated Chassis Management system. And while that may all sound terribly complicated to

Flanked by contemporary art galleries, villa Moda’s Dubai store is itself a mecca to individual style. Their 

decadently designed multi-brand, two-storied ‘palace’ stocks diverse eveningwear, accessories and one-off

Oryx. Once resident in dwindling numbers, a careful breeding program has swelled the herd

of many. The flourishing grasses and trees, the spotting of rare birds such as the great lappedfaced

Back in 1833, around 800 members of the Bani yas tribe, led 

by the now-ruling Maktoum family, settled at the mouth of the

While confidence may be low, the Middle East art market continues to fizz 

expectantly on the surprise success of leading auction houses Christie’s and 

Bonhams. While both raised less than the previous year in their autumn 

contemporary sales, they both made their minimum estimates. Christie’s even 

broke an auction world record, selling Ahmed Moustafa’s Remembrance and 

Gratitude for US$662,500, the highest price ever fetched by auction for a modern 

work by an Arab artist. 

Tenuous accolades aside, it refutes the claim that Middle East art prices are being 

dragged down by the general slump in demand for contemporary art. Bonhams, 

sold an impressive 70 per cent of its lots that included a spattering of South Asian 

Art, with the majority of buyers hailing from the Middle East.

Mathew Girling, Chief Executive of Bonhams, said, “I am very encouraged by the turnout at the sale which 

indicated return in confidence in the art market here in Dubai. The region has seemingly weathered the

Christie’s meanwhile, drew even bigger crowds at their legendary Watch and Jewellery Sale, which saw a pair of 

Asscher-cut diamond ear pendants weighing an impressive 15 carats each, sell for over half a million dollars. 

“Christie’s auctions in Dubai are the international benchmark for the Middle Eastern art market,” explained 

Michael Jeha, Managing Director of Christie’s Middle East. “Despite the global economic troubles of the last 

year, the appetite for art in the Middle East continues to grow, as does the international appreciation for Middle 

Eastern art.”

Chocolatier Jean Galler on creating a unique collection 

especially for the Middle East. 


Couture is just as fitting for contemporary chocolate as it is for fashion. With impresarios such as Belgian 

chocolatier Jean Galler leading the way, the art of making these mini-morsels of heaven continues to evolve.
