Term of office of members of senate(1) Members appointed in terms of subparagraphs 23(1)(a),(b), (c), (f), (g), (j), (k), (l), (m) and (n) must hold officefor as long as they are employed by the University in thatcapacity.(2) The term of office of members referred to in subparagraph23(1)(o) and (p) is not more than 3 (three) years and,notwithstanding the date of commencement of their termof office, expires on 31 December in their third year on thesenate.(3) Members appointed in terms of subparagraphs 23(1)(e),(h) and (i) must hold office for as long as they hold office aschairperson.(4) The term of office for student members referred to inparagraph 23(1)(q) is determined by the SRC, providedthat membership automatically lapses when a studentceases to be a member of the SRC.(5) Where a member who has been elected or appointed dies,resigns or vacates office for any reason including the expiryof his or her term of office, the secretary to the senate mustnotify the authority or body that has appointed or electedsuch member of the vacancy, and must, if in the opinion ofthe chairperson of the senate it is reasonably practicableto do so, request such authority or body to appoint or electa successor.(6) The successor holds office for a full term of office as specifiedin paragraphs 24(1) to 24(4) above.25. Chairperson, vice-chairperson and secretary to senate(1) The vice-chancellor is the chairperson of the senate ascontemplated by the Act.28
