Management and senior management(1) Management means, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act, seniormanagement as well as management as determined by<strong>the</strong> council.(2) Senior management means, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act,<strong>the</strong> vice-chancellor, <strong>the</strong> deputy vice-chancellors, <strong>the</strong>registrar or <strong>the</strong> registrars, <strong>the</strong> executive direc<strong>to</strong>rs and o<strong>the</strong>radministrative positions determined by <strong>the</strong> council <strong>to</strong> beexecutive positions.54. Vice-chancellorThe vice-chancellor is <strong>the</strong> chief executive <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.55. Functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vice-chancellor(1) The vice-chancellor and principal is responsible for <strong>the</strong> day<strong>to</strong>-daymanagement and administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>and has all <strong>the</strong> powers necessary <strong>to</strong> perform <strong>the</strong>se functions.(2) The vice-chancellor reports <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> council.(3) By way <strong>of</strong> his or her <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>the</strong> vice-chancellor is a member<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> committees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> council and <strong>the</strong> senate.(4) The council may assign additional functions, and grantadditional powers and privileges <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> vice-chancellor.(5) When <strong>the</strong> vice-chancellor is absent or unable <strong>to</strong> carryout his or her duties for an extended period <strong>of</strong> absence,<strong>the</strong> council may appoint a vice-principal from amongst<strong>the</strong> deputy vice-chancellors <strong>to</strong> act in place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vicechancellorduring his or her absence. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> shortabsences on business, vacation or illness <strong>the</strong> vice-chancellormay delegate his authority in terms <strong>of</strong> paragraph 58.46
