Convocation representation on the council(1) Three convocation members who are not staff members orstudents of the University must be members of the council.(2) The president of convocation must be the first convocationmember of the council.(3) Convocation in terms of its constitution must elect the twoother convocation members on the council.52. Constitution of convocation(1) The council must approve the constitution for convocation.(2) The convocation constitution must provide for all mattersrelating to the election and terms of office of theconvocation executive and its representatives on thecouncil and for the functions of the convocation and theconvocation executive together with such other provisionsas the council may consider appropriate within the contextof this Statute and the Act.45
MANAGEMENT AND SENIOR MANAGEMENT2 nd Edition53. Management and senior management(1) Management means, for the purpose of the Act, seniormanagement as well as management as determined bythe council.(2) Senior management means, for the purpose of the Act,the vice-chancellor, the deputy vice-chancellors, theregistrar or the registrars, the executive directors and otheradministrative positions determined by the council to beexecutive positions.54. Vice-chancellorThe vice-chancellor is the chief executive officer of the University.55. Functions of the vice-chancellor(1) The vice-chancellor and principal is responsible for the dayto-daymanagement and administration of the Universityand has all the powers necessary to perform these functions.(2) The vice-chancellor reports to the council.(3) By way of his or her office the vice-chancellor is a memberof all the committees of the council and the senate.(4) The council may assign additional functions, and grantadditional powers and privileges to the vice-chancellor.(5) When the vice-chancellor is absent or unable to carryout his or her duties for an extended period of absence,the council may appoint a vice-principal from amongstthe deputy vice-chancellors to act in place of the vicechancellorduring his or her absence. In the case of shortabsences on business, vacation or illness the vice-chancellormay delegate his authority in terms of paragraph 58.46
