<strong>May</strong> 2, 2011wingspan.lccc.wy.edusports<strong>Wingspan</strong> 47Eberth credits coach, team for her success‣ ¾ From EBERTH, Page 46on the first weekend of April.After the hunt seat regionals,LCCC hosted Western regionalswith the hope of qualifying anumber of students to Westernsemifinals March 28–29 inSpringfield, Mo.Despite hosting Westernregionals, only two students,Graham and Eberth, qualifiedfor the Western semifinals.Graham finished first andqualified in open horsemanship,and Eberth finishedsecond to qualify in beginnerhorsemanship because theintermediate horsemanship experimentdidn’t work in qualifyingher for regionals.After a few weeks to prepare,Graham and Eberth headed offto Missouri for their chance toqualify for nationals in Kentucky.In order for the students toqualify, they had to finish in theTop Four of their events.Graham, who had a successfulseason and wanted to makeup for the previous year whenher year ended at semifinals,once again endured the samefate, finishing in sixth in herevent.Eberth, however, finishedin second place in her event toqualify for nationals in Kentucky.Despite being in Wyoming andthe United States for one year,Eberth is excited to see the stateof Kentucky this <strong>May</strong>.Eberth finished second inbeginner horsemanship to earnher trip to Kentucky.“I’m excited that I get to seeanother state. It has been reallyfun to travel with the team thisyear,” Eberth said.After a few weeks off, Hoagwent to California to try to joinEberth on the trip to Kentuckyfor the Intercollegiate HorseShow Association nationals.To join Eberth, Hoag had tofinish in the Top Two to qualify.Hoag had a strong show inbeginner equitation; however,she finished third and did notjoin Eberth in Kentucky fornationals.“Obviously, I wanted to sendmore than one rider to nationals,but Eberth has been strong,so I expect a good show fromher in Kentucky,” Koons said.Nationals, which will takeplace <strong>May</strong> 5–8 in Lexington,Ky. Even though she started theevent watching and learninghow to ride horses Westernstyle, she quickly went to thetop of the region in beginnerhorsemanship.“I really want to thank LanaeKoons and Emily Graham aswell as the rest of the team fortheir support and help this year.All of my success comes fromtheir help,” Eberth said.Koons also wanted to thinkthe horse breeders and thecommunity for the success ofthe team.After nationals, Eberth willprepare for her long trip backhome to Germany after a verysuccessful ride through theentire equestrian season.Soccer coaches boost lineups with fresh facesPlayers coming from Mexico, neighboring states to fill holes of students leavingBy Chris GormanAdvertising ManagerThe Laramie County Community Collegesoccer teams are in the spring recruitingseason and ready for some great athletictalent.Recruiting is not an easy job for communitycollege coaches. They are always rebuildingand recruiting every year, but this doesn’tseem to affect the LCCC soccer coaches.Spring has been good for the LCCC men’ssoccer team as they traveled to Colorado fora spring tournament. LCCC lost its leadinggoal scorer, Tyler Arbuckle,who transferred to Dixie StateUniversity in Utah.Gibson said Arbuckle will behard to replace, but he has highhopes for the newly signed forward,Dewy Rodgers, of Loveland,Colo., who was high in scoring inthat state.The team will be bringing backall its midfield players from lastseason.The team is still actively lookingto fill some more of thesegaps.Gibson said: “The forwardposition will be good but young.The defender position will have agood core, but we still are lookingfor some depth, and goalies arealso looking great.”The team has already signedsome athletes that Gibson wasexcited to have in the LCCC soccerprogram.The team currently has signedtwo athletes from Wyomingincluding Cody Smart from GreenRiver and Jalen Willett fromCheyenne.Gibson has also brought in recruitsfrom Utah as well. They areSpencer Gray from Lehi as well asDino Soto from Roy.The team will also add aninternational player to the teamwith Luis Gonzales who willjoin the team from Chihauhua,Mexico, next fall.“We have been very picky thisyear for recruiting,” Coach Gibsonsaid. “We won’t have as many onthe roster because we went withmore of quality than quantity.”According to Jim Gardner, theLCCC women’s soccer coach, hebelieved his team will be balancedall the way through. He will haveeight defenders, four midfielders,four outsiders and four forwardson his team this year.Coach Gardner is content withthe number of athletes he had lostat the end of the season. The teamhad lost only five sophomores.So where does Coach Gardnerfind his recruits to fill thesepositions? “Everywhere,” CoachGardner said. There is no oneplace from which he recruits hisathletes.Colorado and Wyoming aretwo major states that contributeto the recruiting process. Onlytwo new recruits from Wyomingwill join the women’s soccer teamthis season.Coach Gardner has several newrecruits he is excited to have comeplay for him this year includingtwo Columbian Nation team playersand four Puerto Ricans.
