Volume XVII, No. 2 News of The Turner Schools http://www.turnerusd202.org/ February 2011Mayor Joe ReardonShares the Meaning ofJFK’s “Ask Not” Speech withTurner High School Students“In your hands, my fellowcitizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success orfailure of our course. Since thiscountry was founded, eachgeneration of Americans hasbeen summoned to give testimonyto its national loyalty. The graves of young Americanswho answered the call toservice surround the globe.”With this citation from thefamous inaugural speech ofJohn F. Kennedy, deliverednearly fifty years ago (January20, 1961), Kansas City,Kansas Mayor Joe Reardonaddressed an auditorium-fullof Turner High School students. At ten o’clock in the morningon January 6 th , Mayor Reardonrelated their current station inhistory with one of the mostwell-known political speechesof modern time.Of course, the phrase that ismost familiar from that famousspeech is the one that reads,“And so, my fellow Americans:ask not what your country cando for you - ask what you cando for your country “. Afternoting that President Kennedy’sinaugural speech was oneof the shortest in history—thirteenminutes—and promisingto emulate that accomplishment,Mayor Reardon used thefamous “ask not” statementto initiate an oral essay on thevalue of and need for citizenparticipation in the politicalprocess and to promote localvolunteerism.Well over 200 THS studentschose to attend the Mayor’spresentation and each exhibitedrapt attention as he madehis case for being positivelyinvolved in the social andgovernmental systemin which they live. Followinghis talk, theMayor stood for questionsfrom the audience, which rangedfrom “When are wegoing to get a secondJack in the Box” to“How much (salary)do you make?” In all,Mayor Reardon spentnearly an hour with thestudents, all of whomappeared appreciativeand gratified by theexchange in which theyhad just participated. KCK Mayor Joe Reardon addressed a large audience of Turner HighSchool students and then allotted some time to answer questionsposed by small groups and individuals.inside23DistrictHonor RollsPages 5 – 9Turner HighSchool NewsTurner MiddleSchool NewsEndeavor AlternativeSchoolMidland TrailElementary School NewsEarly LearningCenter NewsTurner High SchoolHonor Rolls (cont)Turner Middle SchoolHonor Rolls4678910Junction ElementarySchool Honor RollsMidland TrailElementary Honor RollsOak Grove ElementarySchool Honor RollsTurner ElementarySchool Honor RollsTurner ElementarySchool NewsJunction and OakGrove ElementarySchool News11Non-Profit OrganizationU.S. PostagePAIDKansas City, KSPermit No. 107Residential Customerhttp://www.turnerusd202.org/Office of Public Information913.288.4100Turner Public Schools800 South 55th StreetKansas City, KS 6610612Turner RecProfessionalDevelopment Daysfebruary

Additionally this year, we will be assessingstudents in the area of science in grades 4 and 7, in history/government ingrades 6 and 8, and in both science and history/government, once in high schoolusually after completion of specific high school courses. The Kansas State Assessments are what Kansas uses to determine whether ornot a student meets standards in the specific areas tested. It also provides teacherswith one part of the picture regarding a child’s strengths and weaknesses. These results combined with other tools—such as evaluating day-to-day classwork, grading homework, observing in the classroom and keeping track of howstudents change and grow throughout the year—are all used to measure a child’sprogress and assist teachers in gaining insights into the skills, abilities and knowledgeof every child. Additionally, these assessments assist parents and educatorsin finding out how much students have learned relative to the Kansas AcademicStandards. Generally, Midland Trail students will take part in the assessmentsbetween February 23 rd through April 13 th .To help students prepare for the upcoming assessments and to reduce theiranxiety, the following tips are offered:• Encourage children to take these tests seriously. However, don’t becometoo anxious about a child’s test score; too much emphasis on a test scorecan be upsetting. Additionally, test scores are not perfect measures of whata child can do.• Have the child get a good night’s sleep.• Ensure they are well-rested and have eaten a good breakfast as both areimportant to test-taking just as they are to other school work.• Have the child look quickly at the entire assessment to see what types ofquestions are included. This also helps children understand how to pacethemselves.• Stress the importance of reading the directions carefully and reading eachquestion carefully. Additionally, if the child doesn’t understand the question,he or she should ask the teacher to explain.• Ask the child to give their best guess instead of leaving questions unanswered.Of course, the most important thing for all students to remember is to simplydo their best! By encouraging and praising them for things they do well, they willfeel good about themselves and will do their best.Turner Early LearningCenter studentswere greetedby a benevolentMr. and Mrs.Santa who guaranteedthat everystudent went awaywith a holiday gift.288-3800Turner EarlyLearning CenterBecky Letcher, PrincipalDear Parents…By Becky Letcher, Principal, Turner Early Learning CenterThe third quarter is upon us and students are very busy learning. All kindergartenstudents have taken the MAP assessment in reading and math. You willreceive a parent letter during conference that shows your student’s achievementson this test. Ask your child’s teacher about each of the assessments and what itmeans for your child’s learning.u u u u uKindergarten students have a new computer program that they began usingon January 5th. The program is Waterford and it reviews and teaches all thereading skills taught in kindergarten. If your child already knows many thekindergarten skills it will move them into the first grade skill level. Studentsenjoy the program and are on the program for 20 minutes each day.u u u u uWe have spent the first semester of school teaching all students about theschool rules and the appropriate behavior. In the second semester of schoolstudents who are not following the rules will receive a discipline referral. I willcall home to discuss the referral and you can read the referral when it comeshome in your child’s backpack.u u u u uWe will have our Dr. Seuss Night again this year. This year it will be on March3rd. Mark your calendars for a family event filled with fun activities for everyone.Thank you for being supportive parents and reading each night with your child.Sincerely,Becky LetcherPrincipal of the Turner Early Learning Center @ MuncieTo the naked eye, this looks like some students holding objects standing undera sheet. However, it is actually the students in Trish Guthrie’s fifth grade classdemonstrating the process of cell division.

These assessments are given in reading and math at grades 3-8 andonce in high school and in science in grades 4 and 7 and once in high school. The Kansas Assessments are given to ensure all students are meeting the expectations establishedby the Kansas State Board of Education. The items on the test broadly represent the knowledgeand skills students are expected to have in a subject area. A school’s performance on the KansasComputerized Assessment is how Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is determined. The Elementaryand Secondary Education Act (ESEA) better known as No Child Left Behind requires that schoolsmeet AYP targets annually in reading and math. The targets represent the percentage of studentsin the school that must pass the test. For 2011, the AYP targets are below:KCA Reading K – 8 87.8% High School 86.0%KCA Math K – 8 86.7% High School 82.3%If you have a student in school, it is important that during the testing weeks your child receivesadequate sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before school. Studies have shown that students performbetter on standardized tests when they have eaten prior to the test. We appreciate your helpin preparing our students for success on these assessments. In addition, we would encourage you to discuss with your student the importance of these assessments. If you do not have a student in school please convey the importance of these assessmentsto the students you interact with in the community. The scores they receive become part of theircumulative school record and can impact their future. They also play a key role in determiningwhether our schools retain accreditation. The reputation of our schools impacts the entire community. It is one of the main factors new home buyers look at when choosing a community inwhich to purchase a home.If you have questions regarding Spring Assessments in Turner, please contact Joy Engel or JasonDandoy in the Office of Student Services at: 913-288-4123.Turner Unified School District: 2010-2011 buildings & administratorsTurner High School2211 S. 55 th StreetKansas City, KS 66106913-288-3300Principal – Paul ColwellAsst. They were recognized by The Turner Boardof Education for the month of December’s Outstanding CustomerService. We celebrated the beginning of the holiday season byholding two music programs. The children did an outstandingjob on their performances.Additionally we continue to strive for academic excellence. Werecently held the annual Spelling Bee where third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders participated. Diego Acosta placed first in theSpelling Bee and Gianelli Vargas was runner up. Our teachersare working diligently to meet the needs of all of our students. We continue to individualize instruction as much as possible sothat our students will be successful in their academics. We thank you for continuing thetradition of excellence at Oak Grove Elementary!Looking forward to a successful second semester,Gayle BertramPrincipalJunction Elementary School288-3600News from the NestBy Jay Douglas, Principal, Junction ElementaryJay Douglas, PrincipalFirst semester has now come to an end. Is it just me or has it gone by super fast this year? Weare now at the time of year when all of us will feel like we are in school and then out, in and thenout. The winter break starts it all off, followed by the other holidays in January and February, aswell as staff development days. Soon, we will have the state testing windows open, usually justbefore Spring Break, so please be aware and watch for the notices coming home about these dates.I would like to thank everyone in the community and at Junction for your kindness and openingof your hearts to help families in need during the holiday season. Canned good items were collected, and with the PTA’s help, we helped 7 families. The kids also brought in enough items forMr. Douglas to cut stripes in his beard. This was a big hit, although many hoped he would spendthe night on the roof. They missed that goal by about 200 items. But, it turned out for the best, the day the collection stopped, the temperature dropped and it was raining, Mr. Douglas wasn’ttoo crazy about staying on the roof in the rain.I want to give a special thank-you to the PTA. They put the “Dinner with Santa” night together, and it went very well. Lots of parents and students turned out for Chris Cakes, to buy from theworkshop, and to getpictures with Santa. They also got parentsin for the Winter Partiesand helped withsnack items. Thankyou,PTA!To end the semester,we had two nightsof Music Concerts.First grade throughthird grade was theStudents from Rosemary Miller’s first grade class depict dancing pumpkinsduring their Halloween class play.initial concert. Ithink we had almost400 people turn outfor the concert. Thefourth through sixthgrade came the secondnight. I thinkthere were over 300people in attendancefor it. They were twogreat nights of singing, dancing, and celebrating the holiday season. Students worked very hard to get ready and didan awesome job on the night of their performances. Kudos go to Ms. Ebberts for all the hard workthat went in to both nights’ performances. In fact, congratulations to all, I heard a lot of positivecomments about the two evenings. As we enter a new year and start the second half of the school year, I want to wish everyone asuccessful and productive semester.Turner High School KU ScholarsEach year, the University of Kansas recognizes the top ten percent of high school seniorsin its service area, designating them KU Scholars. On six days throughout the year, teachers and administrators attendschool when students do not. These days are identified for teachers, administrators and in somecases para-professionals to learn knowledge and skills that will improve their effectiveness aseducators. The time is primarily focused on district and school level improvement initiatives andgrade level and department collaboration. The district as well as each individual school writes a plan for improving the achievement ofstudents in Turner. As a part of that process, we examine data, write goals, and research newinitiatives to improve how we teach students. The changes we make to the program and the effectivemethodologies we adopt often must be learned by the teachers and para professionals in thedistrict. Time on professional development days provides this opportunity.Another large portion of this time is dedicated to teachers working together to apply the knowledgethat they have learned. Teachers collaborate on how to embed these effective strategies intothe lessons they have planned for students throughout the year. They may also use this time tomonitor student performance and make corrections to the program if students are not graspingan important concept. When all fourth grade teachers meet to discuss the program it also ensuresthat all fourth grade students throughout the district are getting the same quality of educationregardless of which building they attend.Education research is very clear: the effectiveness of the classroom teacher influences studentlearning more than any other factor. It is vital for our students that we continue to invest time ingiving Turner teachers the tools they need to be effective.Announcement from theTurner Recreation CommissionSECRET SHOPPER PROGRAM (ages 18 and older)Former Upward Bound participants from Turner High JuanaGonzalez, Alicia Johnson, and Travis Dixson describe theirsummer experiences to their THS peers as Upward Boundcounselor Linda Davison listens in.Turner Recreation Commission and Turner Aquatic Center are committed tomaking your experience with us as great as possible.
