Please feel free to stop by and see usany time – we would love to show you around. We have establisheda guaranteed and viable curriculumand mapped that curriculumover an instructionalyear. Every Turner student hasutilized at least one new curricularresource in their learning. These steps have helped bringconsistency and cohesion to alldistrict classrooms. We have aclear vision of what studentsneed to know and when in theircareer in Turner they shouldlearn it. How students learnbest has been the focus of ourwork this year.Turner teachers have spentprofessional development dayslearning about the conceptof differentiated instruction.“At its most basic level, differentiatinginstruction meansshaking up what goes on in theclassroom so that students havemultiple options for taking ininformation, making sense ofideas, and expressing whatthey learn.” (Tomlinson, 2001)Fundamentally the conceptis about giving every childwhat they need in order toexperience success in learningwhether it is needed interventionor enrichment. One sizedoes not fit all.In the differentiated classroom, teachers design lessonsbased on learning style, studentneed, or student interest. Youmay see this approach utilizedin both how the teacher deliversthe instruction and howthe students practice theirlearning. Thus, two studentsin the same classroom may, onoccasion, complete differentactivities based on the threefactors above.Turner teachers share thebelief that maintaining andimproving their instructionalpractices is an essential jobfunction. They will continue tolearn new strategies for makingthis manageable in a classroomof varied learners throughoutthe next school year. If youhave questions about the conceptor practice of differentiatedinstruction, please contactthe Office of Student Services at(913) 288-4123.

Our studentsdemonstrated that with a lot of hard work and determination you can meet your goals. Ourpreliminary scores on the Kansas State Assessment show that 82% of our students met or exceededthe standards in reading and 89% met or exceeded the standards in math. While we did take alittle slip from last year, I am proud of both the students and staff for all of the effort they put intolearning throughout the school year. We have some work ahead to return to our previous scores, but please be assured we will get there.I want to thank you, the parents and guardians of our students, for encouraging and supportingyour children during the 2009-2010 school year. Let’s make sure our students continue to makegains by working with them this summer. Read with your children, take them out on adventuresand talk with them about the exciting events that will take place throughout the summer. Thankyou for sharing your children with us and have a safe and enjoyable summer.Turner Elementary SchoolTurner Elementary NewsBy Deb Ayers-Geist, PrincipalRock on, Turner Elementary!! We have RockStar students and staff at Turner Elementary. The students worked extremely hard to achievetheir academic goals this year. The teacherscontinue to set high standards for the academicperformance of their students and are constantlystriving for a excellence. We had 54 studentsreceive the highest category, exemplary, on theKansas State Math Assessment. We also had52 students receive exemplary on the ReadingAssessment. Fourth grade students took thescience assessment and four of them receivedexemplary.Turner Elementary’s halls were filled withstudents in their rock star reading shirts. We hada total of 350 students that earned the honor ofwearing their rock star shirts. Shannon will tellDeb Ayers-Geist, Principalyou she put a lot of stars on those shirts…theyreally did look like rock stars. Students earneda total of 42,358 points this year!!! This was theirfirst year to do Reading Counts. Can’t wait to seewhat they do next year! All students that earnedtheir rock star shirts participated in a Rock StarCelebration at the end of the year. While the school year winds down I also wantto thank all the Rock Star parents, grandparents, and community members that have helped tomake our year a success. We could not have accomplishedwhat we did without the help of thededicated adults in the Turner community.Overall it was a great year at Turner Elementaryand I’m sure they will continue to rock asROCK STAR STUDENTS and a ROCK STARFACULTY!!Lynnette Hatfield, PrincipalMidland Trail Elementary NewsBy Lynnette Hatfield, PrincipalCan you believe it? Another year is just about over and summer break is almost here again. Wehad a great year and you have been an important part of it. Thank you for your cooperation andsupport. Our students and staff too have worked very hard to, and I want to take this opportunityto extend my thanks to them as well.As summer approaches, students are looking forward to free time. During the long summerbreak, students often lose some of what they were taught during the school year. Here are somethings you can do with your child to encourage learning over the summer. Summer vacation is agood time to visit the library. Often times the local library sponsors a summer reading program inwhich the students can earn rewards for their reading. This will motivate children to get interestedin reading. Have your child keep a journal of their summer activities. This will help keep yourchild’s writing skill from slipping over the summer months.I wish you all a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you on Back to School Night,Thursday, August 12, 2010 5:00-6:30.JunctionElementary School288-3600Jay Douglas, PrincipalNews from the NestBy Jay Douglas, Principal, Junction ElementaryIt’s another year coming to a close at Junction. Has it gone fastor is it just me? Anyhow, it’s been a great year again! We arewrapping things and starting to look at changes for next year.We will have some new faces in the building next year as wehave some teachers retiring. Mrs. Jan Leeper, Mrs. Pat Bozichand Mrs. Peggy Hodges will be leaving us. With any luck, maybewe will be able to get them back by here once in awhile. We willbe losing well over 60 years of experience in these 3 ladies. Wewish them the best. I almost forgot, Mrs. Towle will be leaving usto be a high school chorus teacher at her alma-mater in Topeka. We wish her the best too!As the year comes to an end, we are waiting to hear the officialresults from State testing. Currently, we are around 81% at orabove meets standard in both Reading and Math. We set a goalto try to get a grade to reach Standard of Excellence, and I thinkthe 6th grade class is going to be real close. They had 90% of thestudents meeting standard in both Reading and Math. As a building,I think we have made AYP, but nothing is official until laterthis summer. The kids worked very hard this year and showedus their super powers! Thank you to everyone for your supportof the school and of your children. With continued home-schoolcooperation, we can keep reaching higher and seeing our studentsbecome successful. Be watching for our theme for next year! Thisyear was a lot of fun with our “Super J’s”.The PTA has been very helpful again this year. Thank-you forall you’ve done and continue to do for us. Without you, PTAmembers, the field trips, parties, carnival, bingo night, and otherevents would not be possible. We look forward to everyone beinginvolved again next year.Field day was finally worked in after a two week delay! Theweather just wouldn’t cooperate! Mr. Neri and the 6th gradestudents did a great job, and the kids had a great time! Lots ofwater and snow cones, besides all the games and the movie in thegym were a big hit! Thank-you to everyone who helped makethis a success, too! (Lunch was outside in front of the buildingwhere we had a little bit of shade!)Things to look for next year: We will have a “sneak-peak night”,the building will be open for an hour so parents and studentsmay stop by and drop off school supplies. We will do an “informationalnight” later, where parents will get the opportunityto meet their child’s teacher and learn more about expectationsfor the year, to obtain testing information, and to hear from thePTA. Next year, also, we are going to try to establish Muffinsw/Mom, Donuts w/Dads, and an event for grandparents, withhelp from the Student Council. There will be a new theme fornext year too!Well, I know this is short, but I would like to close by saying“Thank-you” to everyone! It has been a great year! Everyonehas done a great job and should pat themselves onthe back! Have a great summer and we will seeyou in August!

At the startof the 2010-11 school year, the three-year rolloutof SMART Boards, document cameras, and wirelesskeyboards will be complete. Bringing thistechnology to the vast majority of the classroomsin the District has changed the way teachersteach, and students learn. One student, overheardwhile a SMART Board was being repaired, asked, “How are we going to learn without theSMART Board?” That is all you need to hear tounderstand the impact this technology is makingin our classrooms. After the installation of approximately 500new computers at Turner High School lastsummer, the Technology Department will bepurchasing, configuring, and distributing 240new “mini” laptops this summer. The new laptopswill be distributed among eight new carts(stations) for the teachers and students to utilizeat the Elementary Schools. In these lean budget times, Technology hasleveraged their Virtual Server environmentBecky Letcher, PrincipalSummer Fun for a Smooth TransitionBy Becky Letcher, Principal, Turner Early Learning CenterSummer is a wonderful time to enjoy yourchildren without the stress of school and timelines. This is also a good time to prepare yourchildren for the transitions that will happen inAugust. Kindergarten children will be movingon to 1st grade and pre-k children will bemoving to all day kindergarten. Those arebig transitions for any child. Change is nevereasy and it is helpful to take the lazy days ofsummer to help prepare your children for thischange. Here is a list of things you can do toprepare for the transitions in August:All kindergartners visited their 1st gradeschool in May. Talk about the visit. What didthey see? How do they feel about moving onto the new school? Talking about the visit isan important step for your child to processthe transition. Go back to the school andplay on the playground during the summer. This helps your child become familiar withthe school. Always talk about the transitionpositively. Your child knows that 1st grademeans more will be required. Help them feelconfident that they can do all that is asked ofthem in 1st grade.Pre-K children will be kindergartners nextyear. That means they will need to adjust to allday school during the summer. You can helpyour child adjust by keeping a daily routinethat will not change once school starts. Haveyour child keep the same morning and nightschedule that they will keep during school.Talk to your child about being at school all day.Have your child list some of the things theywill get to do when they stay all day such as:physical education, music, and computer lab.Kindergarten is filled with hands on learningthat children enjoy.to handle continued expansion without anyfinancial outlay. In addition, numerous modificationshave been made to our domain andpolicies which have provided a more robustuser experience. This year also brought the new and improvedShout Point Messenger from Infinite Campus. This system was put to the ultimate test in earlyJanuary when we used it to notify the householdsof close to 4000 students that the schoolswere closed due to bad weather. Through thesephone calls and emails all District householdswere contacted in less thanan hour.FREE, tasty & nutritious summer meals will beavailable to children at two locations…MIDLAND TRAILELEMENTARY SCHOOL3101 S. 51 st Street, KCKBreakfast Time7:30 – 8:15 amLunch Time11:15 – 12:15 pmCafeteria913-288-3540FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICES913-288-4143TURNER HIGH SCHOOL2211 S. 55 th Street, KCKBreakfast Time6:45 – 7:30 amNo Lunch ServiceCafeteria913-288-3340Community Adults & Summer School Staff mayenjoy breakfast for $1.85 and lunch for $3.25.All meals must be consumed in the school cafeteria.Snack foods are available for purchase.School Buses Cover Extensive TerritoryBy Joe Peterson, Transportation SupervisorTransportation had another solid year. We managed to travel nearly 400,000 miles transportingstudents to and from school, to field trips and athletic activities and events. On a daily basis, transportation bused nearly 3300 students to and from school, transported students from OurLady of Unity to our schools for testing and ELL classes and transported the Focus and BuildingTrades students. Transportation also bused students to TEC (Technical Education Center at 59thand Parallel), work sites, IEP meetings, hearing screenings and many otherdestinations that involved student learning. Another important aspect oftransportation is the two practice bus evacuations that are provided eachyear. These include important safety instructions designed for maximumsafety. On behalf of the drivers, mechanics, bus aides and staff, we wisheveryone a great summer.

Page 12 www.turnerusd202.org The Turner June 2010Spotlight on a Turner Graduate –Major Gary BrooksPart of the payoff of being a teacher comes from the mystery of notknowing the future. As Gary Brooks progressed through the Turnerschool system--from his elementary years at Oak Grove through HighlandJunior High [now Midland Trail Elementary]and on to Turner High School—Brooks’ teacherswould not know that he would one day becomea Bronze Star recipient for his heroic actionsin the 2008 Enduring Freedom campaign inAfghanistan.Gary Brooks, the son of Larry and DonnaBrooks, spent his entire childhood in Turner, moving through classrooms such as those taught by Nancy Shirley,Tom Flynn, Jim Tate, and Coach Pat Carmody. After he graduated fromTurner High School in 1992, Brooks attended KCKCC for one year beforeentering the U.S. Naval Academy. In May 1997, Brooks graduated fromthe Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in history and received hiscommission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Followinghis basic officer training, Brooks attended flight school from 1998 – 2000.He is now a helicopter pilot and currently serves as both Executive Officerand Maintenance Officer for his unit, the Marine Heavy HelicopterSquadron (HMH-366), based in Cherry Point, North Carolina.Major Gary Brooks was deployed to Afghanistan as the Air Officer/Forward Air Controller for Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 6thMarine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit during the OperationEnduring Freedom campaign in 2008. As a result of his outstandingperformance, Major Brooks was awarded the Bronze Star on May 13,2010. Brooks’ citation reads, in part, “Through 35 days of sustained enemycontact, he executed 48 close air support missions and 22 helibornecasualty evacuations and directly influenced successful operations to seizekey Taliban strongholds in Garmsir. The exceptional professional ability, steadfast initiative and selfless dedication to duty displayed by MajorBrooks reflected great credit upon him and upheld the highest traditionsof the Marine Corps and the United States Navel Service.”Major Brooks’ suggestion to current Turner students is, “Study. Makeit hard now, and it will be easier later.” When asked what he plans to doafter retiring from the Marine Corps, Brooks suggested he might, “countminnows in a stream in Kansas for the Department of Wildlife and Parks.”Based on the description of his work in Afghanistan on behalf of all of us,it sounds like he’s earned that job.QUEST Community Learning Center is a dropout recovery program which provides anopportunity for adults who have not received a high school diploma to meet the requirementsnecessary to graduate from Turner High School. VallesSuzanne Marie WendtSamantha Lee YoungOn a scale of one to five, the water temperature was a minuseleven at the Schlitterbahn Water Park when a select group ofTurner Middle School students visited the day before the officialopening. Thirty students were selected to spend the day at the waterpark on the basis of the quality of an interdisciplinary academicproject, incorporating aspects of math, science, language artsand social studies. It was cold that day, and the water was evencolder. As a consequence, of the several schools metro schoolsinvited to attend the advance opening program, only Turner’sgroup braved the elements. As a result, they had the entire waterpark to themselves, and, as depicted in the photo above, didn’tlet a little obstacle like frigid water spoil their fun.Prior to having lunch and using the facilities, the Turner studentsreceived a briefing from Schlitterbahn staff about the waterpark and its recent development. Among other facts, they learnedthat the park is highly “green” both in its construction practicesand in its daily functions. According to Schlitterbahn MarketingDirector Chris Ozimek, “Most of the tree trunk columns, woodsiding, park signs and countertops at the park entry building andinside the park are made from trees that were cleared from theproperty during the construction process. The support structurebeneath the bridge you cross as you enter the park near TorrentRiver is made from four recycled railroad cars. Althoughit takes about 2 million gallons of water to fill the attractions atSchlitterbahn Vacation Village Waterpark, once the waterparkattractions are initially filled, the water is filtered, treated andreused over and over. This minimizes the need to refill with newsupplies of water.”A little cool weather did not dampen the students' enthusiasmnor the fun of having a huge water park all to themselves in exchangefor outstanding work in their classrooms.
