Alba Chairman states that employees will notbe laid off as part of restructuring processAlba Chairman of the Board of Directors, MahmoodHashim Al Kooheji emphasised that the currentre-structuring of the organisation will not lead toemployees being laid off, and that the security andstability of employees’ jobs will not be affected.The statement was made when the Alba Chairmanheld a meeting with the Undersecretary at the Ministryof Labour, Jameel Mohammed Humaidan to updatehim on the current re-structuring process and reviewits effect on the company’s national workforce.Mr Al Kooheji presented the new right-sizedorganisational structure and its consequences interms of contract terminations of a number of thetop management. These changes were seen to benecessary for the purpose of restructuring, reformingof management positions, cost saving, and enhancingthe competitiveness of the company.One of the main assurances that were reachedduring this meeting was to agree on the importanceof restructuring and organisational developmentin order to improve competitiveness and increasecost savings at this point to face the current difficultphase. The termination of the service of some of themanagers as a result of the restructuring process willnot compromise their legal rights, and an agreementwas reached on the appropriate compensations forthem.There are no plans to shut down the reduction lines1 and 2 at this point since these two lines will be closed when Line 6 is finished. Thisshould create new job opportunities for Bahrainis, not minimise them.With regards to assigning executive management positions to expatriates, they wererecruited to meet the company’s current needs of managing and improving the qualityof work. This expatriate expertise will help qualify Bahraini capabilities and prepare themfor taking responsibilities in the coming phase. Alba is firmly committed to dependingupon the capabilities of its national workforce.The Ministry of Labour Undersecretary emphasised that the Ministry appreciatesAlba’s efforts in enhancing the company’s position as one of the major contributors toBahrain’s economy. He also stressed on the success of the policies adopted by Albamanagement as well as other major industrial companies in Bahrain, in supporting thenational workforce and setting the example of depending on Bahrainis in the company’smanagement and achieving outstanding performance, through their discipline anddedication.Mr. Humaidan specifically praised the cooperation that exists between Alba managementand the Alba Union. He added that the realisation of both parties that the success ofthe company and its continuous profitability will help protect the employees’ rights andinterests in the short and the long terms. Also, the employees’ success, stability, andsatisfaction are the key elements to ensure the company’s development.4

رئيس مجلس إدارة ألبا يؤكد على عدمتسريح الموظفين بغرض إعادة الهيكلةاأكد رئيس جملس اإدارة األبا،‏ السيد حممود هاشم الكوهجي،‏ اأناإعادة الهيكلة بالرشكة لن توؤدي اإىل اأي ترسيح بني ‏صفوف العماليف الرشكة.‏ ولن يتحمل العمال اأي تبعات جراء معاجلة االأوضاعاملالية فيها،‏ ‏سعياً‏ من الرشكة اإىل ‏ضمان االستقرار واالأمن الوظيفيملوظفيها.‏جاء ذلك اإثر اللقاء مع وكيل وزارة العمل السيد جميل حممد عليحميدان مع الكوهجي،‏ اإذ مت استعراض املستجدات التي ‏شهدتهاالرشكة موؤخراً‏ على ‏صعيد اإعادة الهيكلة،‏ وتاأثريها على اأوضاعالعمالة الوطنية يف الرشكة يف خمتلف املستويات الوظيفية.‏وقدم الكوهجي عرضاً‏ لالإجراءات التي اتخذتها الرشكة موؤخراً‏وترتب عليها اإنهاء عقود عدد من املسئولني يف االإدارة العلياللرشكة وذلك يف ‏ضوء احلاجة اىل اإعادة الهيكلة واإصالح العملاالإداري وترشيد االإنفاق وتعزيز القدرة التنافسية للرشكة.‏ومن اأبرز النتائج والتاأكيدات التي مت التوصل اإليها خالل االجتماع،‏االتفاق على اأهمية اإعادة الهيكلة والتطوير االإداري لتعزيز القدرةالتنافسية وترشيد النفقات يف هذه املرحلة ملواجهة الظروفالصعبة احلالية.‏كما اأشار اإىل اإن ما ترتب على اإعادة الهيكلة من استغناء عن عددمن املدراء لن ميس حقوقهم القانونية وكذلك حقهم يف احلصولعلى تعويضات جمزية مت التوافق بضاأنها.‏وقد اأكد باأنه ال توجد خطط لدى الرشكة لغلق اخلطني االأول والثاينيف املرحلة احلالية،‏ واإن اإغالق هذين اخلطني ‏سيتم بعد ‏سنوات وبعدبناء اخلط السادس وهو اأمر ‏سيخلق وظائف جديدة للبحرينيني وليس اإىل تقليص عدد العمال.‏حول اإسناد عدد من الوظائف التنفيذية العليا خلربات اأجنبية،‏ فقد جاء لتلبية حاجات الرشكة االآنية الإدارةوتطوير العمل وسوف تلتزم تلك اخلربات االأجنبية باإعداد كفاءات بحرينية لتتسلم هذه املضوؤوليات يف مرحلةالحقة والرشكة ملتزمة بسياستها الثابتة يف االعتماد على العنارص والكفاءات الوطنية.‏ورصح ‏سعادة وكيل وزارة العمل اأنه يف الوقت الذي تقدر فيه الوزارة اجلهود املبذولة لتعزيز مكانة الرشكةوتقوية وضعها التنافسي كرصح من ‏رصوح التنمية االقتصادية يف البحرين،‏ فاإن الوزارة توؤكد يف الوقتنفسه على السياسات الناجحة التي تتبناها اإدارة ‏رشكة األبا،‏ وكما هو احلال بالنسبة جلميع الرشكات الصناعيةالكربى لدعم الكفاءات والعمالة البحرينية بشكل عام،‏ واإعطاء املثال الصادق على االعتماد عليها الإدارة الرشكةوحتقيق مستويات االأداء مبا تتمتع به من االنضباط والعمل املخلص.‏كما اأثنى حميدان بشكل خاص على مستوى التعاون املثمر القائم بني اإدارة الرشكة ونقابتها العمالية واإدراككال اجلانبني اإن جناح الرشكة وضمان استمرار ربحيتها اإمنا يعني حماية مستقبل العمال وضمان مصاحلهماحليوية على املدى القصري والبعيد،‏ كما اأن جناح العمال ومتتعهم باالستقرار والرضا الوظيفي يعد هو العنرصاحليوي لضمان تقدم الرشكة وتطورها.‏5

The Alba takes decision to rightsizemanagement structure to boostgreater operational efficiencyAlba has taken decisive steps to combat the current economiccrisis by right-sizing the management structure into a leanerbody for swifter decision making, and to ensure that thecompany continues to maintain optimum capacity to reachthe highest levels of operational efficiency.A new and detailed organisational chart was presented by AlbaChairman Mahmood Hashim Al Kooheji at a press conferenceat the Alba Club on September 28, 2009. He responded toquestions from the press at the eveat.As part of the re-structuring process, Alba will now have a totalof four chief officers reporting to the Chief Executive and a totalof 26 managers in charge of various departments. Some of thedepartment functions have been merged and the managershave been empowered with enhanced responsibilities.“Change is a constant at the management level and remainingstatic during a crisis is no longer an option we – or anyonein the industry – can easily afford. Our decision to have aleaner management structure has been a strategic move tostreamline the production and decision making process andenable the company to be swift and nimble in respondingto current market dynamics. The objective is to ensure thatAlba continues to maintain optimum capacity in reachingthe highest operational efficiency,” remarked Alba ChairmanMahmood Hashim Al Kooheji.Mr. Kooheji clarified that the goal behind the new organisationalchart is very simple: to be future ready, maintain the company’scompetitive edge and strengthen its core competencies.6

ألبا تقر تعديلالهيكل اإلداري لزيادةالكفاءة والفاعليةاأصدرت ‏)األبا(‏ قرارها مبواجهة التحديات املرتتبة على االأزمة االقتصادية العامليةمن خالل تعديل الهيكل االإداري اإىل تركيب اأكرث بساطة لتسهيل عملية اتخاذ القراربطريقة ‏رسيعة وفعالة،‏ ولضمان استمرارية حفاظ الرشكة على طاقتها االإنتاجيةالقصوى للوصول اإىل اأعلى درجات الكفاءة والفاعلية يف عملياتها املختلفة.‏وقام السيد حممود هاشم الكوهجي،‏ رئيس جملس اإدارة األبا،‏ بتوضيح الهيكل اجلديدللرشكة بشكل مفصل خالل املوؤمتر الصحفي الذي عقد بنادي األبا ظهر يوم االإثننياملوافق 28 ‏سبتمرب 2009، حيث اأجاب اأثناء املوؤمتر عن جميع اأسئلة واستفساراتالصحفيني.‏ووفقاً‏ للهيكل اجلديد،‏ الذي يتكون الطاقم االإداري من اأربعة روؤساء حتت اإرشافالرئيس التنفيذي،‏ وما جمموعه 26 مديراً‏ مضوؤوالً‏ عن خمتلف الدوائر.‏ كما مت دمجبعض الدوائر،‏ حيث اأوكل للمدراء مزيداً‏ من املهام واملضوؤوليات االإدارية.‏وبهذا اخلصوص،‏ علق الكوهجي قائالً:‏ ‏"اإن التغيري على املستوى االإداري اأمر حمتوم،‏والثبات يف مواقعنا خالل وقت االأزمة هو اختيار ليس من السهولة اأخذه بعنياالعتبار ‏سواء بالنسبة لنا،‏ اأو الأي جهة يف القطاع الصناعي.‏ كما اأن قرارنا بتبسيطالهيكل االإداري هو خطوة اسرتاتيجية لتسهيل عملية االإنتاج واتخاذ القرار من اأجلمتكني األبا من االستجابة الرسيعة واملبارشة لتحركات السوق احلالية.‏ الهدف منهذه اخلطوة هو ‏ضمان مواصلة األبا للحفاظ على طاقتها االإنتاجية القصوى مناأجل الوصول اإىل اأعلى درجات الكفاءة والفاعلية يف العمليات".‏كما اأوضح الكوهجي اأن الهدف من وراء الهيكل اجلديد يتمثل بكل بساطة يفاالستعداد للمستقبل واحلفاظ على تنافسية الرشكة وتعزيز قدراتها االأساسية.‏7

Alba's Volunteers Participate for the 6th Year in a Row..Shaikha Hessa: Alba and Injaz Bahraina Unique Model of Community PartnershipShaikha Hessa Bint Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chief Executiveof Injaz Al Bahrain, has praised Alba for its instrumentalrole in sponsoring Injaz Al Bahrain's activities over thepast five years, and that it continues this role for thesixth year in a row by sponsoring its activities or throughthe participation by its volunteers in providing Injaz AlBahrain's programmes for schools' male and femalestudents in different governorates of the Kingdom.Shaikh Hessa Al Khalifa said: "We consider Albato be a strategic partner not by providing materialsupport only, but because it is also contributing tothe development, continuity and spread of Injaz AlBahrain's programmes among the largest number ofstudents, and this demonstrates that Alba and Injaz AlBahrain are a unique model of community partnershipin the Kingdom."This came during the visit by Shaikha Hessa to Albathis morning. She was welcomed by Mr. MohammedMahmood, Production Operations Head, Tim Morray,Head of Financial Affairs and Alba's volunteers inInjaz Al Bahrain's programmes for the academic year2009-2010 in the presence of Mrs. Badriya Naqi,Development and Programmes Manager in Injaz AlBahrain.For his part, Mr. Mohammed Mahmood said: "Albatakes pride for being one of the participants in providingvolunteers to Injaz Al Bahrain for the 6th year in arow, and this has enhanced community partnershipbetween the two parties. The number of volunteers hasreached 40, who come from different disciplines, i.e.engineering, medical care, accounts and administrativeaffairs, and who have been distributed to provide InjazAl Bahrain's programmes all over the schools of theKingdom's governments."Mr. Mohammed Mahmood added: "Alba enjoys solidrelationship with Injaz Al Bahrain, being one of the firstcompanies which contributed to the project since InjazAl Bahrain was established. This relationship improvedwith the progress of time to change into a strategicpartnership in supporting modern programmes forstudents, the last being work ethics, the annualcompetition and hosting them at the company, whichwill add value to students and an opportunity for themto exhibit and demonstrate their skills in differentdisciplines. Alba celebrates International Day forthe ElderlyAlba celebrated the International Day for the Elderlyby hosting the first ever event in which more than500 senior citizens from over ten homes for theelderly were honoured.Alba Community Service Committee spearheadedthe project that was held at the Alba Club underthe patronage of Her Excellency the Minister forSocial Development, Dr. Fatima Al Balooshi.The event was organised by the National ElderlyCommittee.“It is not strange for a major company like Albato host the first ever gathering for the elderly inBahrain. Dr. Khalid Bomtaia represents the privatesector in an economic media seminarAlba Public Relations Manager Dr. Khalid Bomtaiaemphasised that public relations and media divisions inBahrain based organisations need to adopt professionaljournalism in their operations. Additionally, they needto empower their PR operations with specialisedleadership. He criticised the lack of awareness amongsome officials on the importance of public relationsdepartments and the outstanding role they play inpresenting a positive image about the organisation,creating a positive impact regionally and internationally,and contributing towards strengthening the economicreputation of the Kingdom of Bahrain.The business media in Bahrain is mainly concernedwith covering the organisations’ performanceand activities, speculations about the future, anddetermining opportunities and fears in order to findfuture solutions.This statement was made during Dr. Bomtaia’sparticipation as a representative of the private sector ina seminar on “Bahrain Business Media and the ComingPhase”, which was organised by the Bahrain Chamberof Commerce and Industry last month and attendedby officials, business investors, and media houses.Dr. Bomtaia asked if the public relations strategy is inline with the organisation’s strategy, and whether theorganisational strategy itself reflects the EconomicVision 2030 and looked at how it can be implemented.He also raised questions on the existence of tools tomeasure these strategies and compare their resultswith the set objectives.He also discussed the importance of enhancingthe role of business media through public relationsdepartments, whose task is to highlight the positiveaspects in an organisation. He also emphasisedthat the responsible body in any organisation is thepublic relations department, which plays a major rolein using the available capabilities of the company andsupporting Bahrain’s economy.He also said that public relations aims at creating theperceived image of the organisation and in defendingit, and that this is the function of public relations withthe external public.22

New Chairman for Albaskan ProjectAlba’s AlbaskanCommittee has anew chairman tooversee the housingrequirements of Alba’sBahraini employeesand to continuethe success of thisunique scheme thathas been in operationsince 1979.Alba’s Calciner andMarine ManagerAbdul Rahman Janahiwill be taking overfrom MohammedMahmood who wasrecently promotedas Chief OperationsOfficer at Alba.As the new chairmanof the Albaskancommittee, Mr.Janahi brings withhim many years ofleadership capabilityat the professionallevel and rich experience in being at the forefrontof various community service projects. He joinedAlba in 1976 as an apprentice and rose throughthe ranks to managerial positions in variousdepartments and spear-headed various projectsand employee surveys. He has also served in theAlba Toastmasters and taken active role in variouscommunity service activities.Mr. Janahi was part of the very first Albaskancommittee when it was founded in 1979 andregards his new appointment as a welcomeopportunity to ‘maximise benefits for Albaemployees and eliminate difficulties that they mayface.’Albaskan has been one of Alba’s earliest corporatesocial responsibility initiatives and was previouslyinvolved in the construction of brand new housesfor Bahraini employees. Ali Jassim..Cartoon at Alba is a strong tool to improve safetyHead of Project Development in the IT department,Ali Jassim, stressed that cartoon is a special art thathelps deliver safety message to the largest possiblegroup of people. This art is understood by everybody,regardless of their languages, education, or origins.This experience was used in Alba for years.“I have been fond of drawing in general since Childhood, and ever since then I worked on improving mytalent in the different fields of art,” said Ali Jassim.“I have always been interested in arts, and I startedparticipating in many art exhibitions at school, whichmade me realise that talent that I have to improve.Therefore, I started participating in art exhibitionsinside within Bahrain and outside. I also won twoawards from the Ministry of Culture and Information.”“At the beginning, I was passionate about painting,and continued until late eighties using oil colors.Then, I started sketching using pencils and madefew farewell cards for retiring colleagues. I realisedwith time my interest in drawing with pencils, whichtransformed into passion for sketching cartoons,”said Jassim.“I look forward to being able to have my own cartoonbooklet on safety. Awatef Al-Hashimi:Discipline in the Alba and the accuracyof a practical turn to my daughtersAwatif Sayed Mahmood Al Hashimi, Accounts andForeign Financial Transactions Clerk, says that atAlba has taught her to be disciplined since she wasa young child because her father was the SecurityDepartment Manager at the company.Awatif says, “This was deepened further when I joinedthe company as a trainee as part of the summer trainingprogramme for employee's children at the MedicalDepartment for three months, and then when I joinedthe company once again on a temporary basis aftercompleting my university studies in accounting andI was confirmed finally in the Accounts Department17 years ago. Alba sponsors Bahrain Riders Clubtrip to LebanonAlba is sponsoring the Bahrain Riders Club’sparticipation at the Motor Bike Week in Lebanon asthey left Bahrain on September 30 for an eleven-daytrip. The support, which is part of the company’scorporate social responsibility, is aimed at bolsteringBahraini youth and promoting their talents at thelocal, regional and international level.The then Alba Chief Executive Ahmed Saleh AlNoaimi emphasised the company’s willingnessto encourage the efforts of the Kingdom’s youngcitizens in making a positive contribution in thesporting arena.“Alba regularly and actively supports national andregional sporting events in which Bahraini youthparticipate. Your lips are parched as you longto quench your thirst with a cool andsatisfying drink. You know your bodyneeds a drink and you pick a softdrink can. Your face wrinkles intoa smile as you run the icy coolnessof the can across your face. Andthen you pull the ring as the drinkbegins to refresh and reinvigorateyou.You breathe a lot easier now. It is stillhot outside but not so oppressiveas before. ألبا تنتج سنوياً‏ ما طوله 550 دائرة تحيطبالكرة األرضية من علب المرطباتكان اليوم حارا يف منتصف الصيف.‏ كان العرق يتسلل على اجلباهوتستقر قطرات العرق على وجنتيك قبل اأن تتساقط بعضها علىقميصك.‏ وتاأخذ يف التململ وتنظر الهثا وتاأمل اأن تريحك قطراتالعرق من ‏شدة القيظ.‏ وحترتق عيناك مع ‏شدة حرارة الشمس وتاأملاأن جتد بعض الظل لكي تخفف من ‏شدة احلرارة يف مكان ما.‏ وكانتاحلرارة ‏شديدة لدرجة اأن منديلك اأصبح مبلال بعد قيامك بتجفيفوجهك بني فينة واأخرى.‏ويبدو احلال كما لو كنت قد دخلت اإيل فرن ينترش فيه اللهب وتريداأن تنطق بشئ ما لكنك ال تستطيع قول ‏شئ.‏ فقد جفحلقك.‏ واأخذت ‏شفتاك يف التشقق فيما تتلهف علىاإرواء ظماأك مبرشوب بارد ومنعش.‏ واأنت تدركاأن جسمك بحاجة اإيل مرشوب مرطب وتاأملاأن جتد علبة من املرطبات لتخفف من اآثارالقيظ.‏ وتبدو على وجهك ابتسامة ترتسمبني جتاعيد وجهك فيما مترر العلبة الباردةعلى قسمات وجهك.‏ ثم تاأخذ يف نزع حلقةالفتح فيما يبداأ املرشوب يف اإنعاشك واإعادةاحليوية والنشاط يف اأجزاء بدنك.‏عندئذ ميكن لك التنفس بسهولة اأكرث.‏ ومازالالطقس حارا يف اخلارج لكنه ليس خانقاكما كان.‏ فيمكن لك اأن تتحمله.‏ وبالتايلفاإنك يف وضع اأفضل الأن املرشوب املنعشمن العلبة هو ما اأراده جسمك بالفعل.‏هذا هو متاما ما تقوم به العلبة املعدنيةاأو على االأقل هذا هو ما يفرتض اأن تقومبعمله.‏فاأنت تدفع 100 فلس مقابل مرشوبكاملفضل وبعد قليل من الرشفات يبدو لكاأنه من املمكن حتمل حرارة الصيف.‏ اإذاأنها تعطيك طاقة متجددة ومزيدا من القوةملواجهة ما تنوي القيام بعمله بعزم اأكرثواإرصار اأوفر.‏مع هذا وبالنسبة لنا نحن يف األبا فاإن علبةاملرطبات هي اأكرث من جمرد وسيلة الإطفاء الظماأ يفيوم ‏صيفي حار.‏ فهذه العلبة متثل اأكرث االستخدامات والتطبيقاتالهامة يف ‏صناعة االأملنيوم يف الوقت احلارض.‏ كما اأنها من اأكرثمنتجات االأملنيوم املعروفة التي يهتم بها اجلميع ويستعملونهابصفة يومية.‏ اإذ اأنها ترمز اإيل الروح التجارية املتجددة والفرصةاالقتصادية التي استفادت منها الصناعة املشتقة ونتيجة لذلكفاإنها نشطت اأحد الفئات الرئيسية يف االقتصاد املحلي واالإقليمي.‏تشكل ‏صناعة االأملنيوم يف الوقت احلارض حوايل 25 باملائة منالقيمة يف قطاع الصناعة غري النفطية اأي ما يعادل حوايل تسعةباملائة من اإجمايل الناجت املحلي البحريني.‏ بعبارة اأخرى فاإن علبةاملرطبات هي جمرد النزر اليسري من الفوائد واملكاسب االقتصاديةالتي توفرها ‏صناعة االأملنيوم للبحرين.‏غري اأنه من اأجل قياس مدى ونطاق عمليات األبا وملعرفة مدىما تشكله من قوة ال يستهان بها يتعني العودة ثانية اإيل العلبةاملعدنية.‏تصور اأنك تضع علبة مرشوب واحدة على االأرض.‏وتصور اأنك تضع علبة اأخرى مقابلها فتشكلبهذا دائرة ‏ضخمة تغطي الطول االإجمايللقطر الكرة االأرضية.‏ واإذا كان من راأيك اأنهذا القطر كبريا مبا فيه الكفاية نطلبمنك التفكري ثانية.‏ تصور اأن قطر الكرةاالأرضية وقد متت اإحاطته 550 مرةبعلب املرشوبات وقد وضعت كل منهامقابل االأخرى.‏ اإذا كنت ترى اأن هذا اأكرثمن كاف جلعل كوكبنا يبدو مثل عطاردبكل ما فيه من حلقات دائرة فالبد اأنتتفق معنا باأننا نتصور هذه الكميةالضخمة للغاية من علب االأملنيوم.‏ومهما كانت التقديرات فاإننا نتحدث عنعدد هائل من العلب التي ميكن روؤيتهابوضوح من الفضاء اخلارجي.‏وميكن اإدراك مدى ‏ضخامة عدد هذهالعلب املصنوعة من االأملنيوم عندماتقوم بقياس الوزن االإجمايل لكل هذهالعلب.‏ وعندما تقوم بذلك ‏سوف تكتشفاأن وزنها يبلغ حوايل 870 األف طنمرتي.‏والضوؤال االآن هو ملاذا يهمنا هذا الرقم؟ففي عام 2008 بلغ االإنتاج االإجمايل الألبااأكرث من 870 األف طن مرتي واالآن عندما تفكريف كل هذه العلب وهي حتيط باالأرض 550 مرة فاإنهذه الكمية متثل معدل االإنتاج الذي تشهده األبا.‏اإذا كانت هذه الصورة مذهلة ومن الصعب تصورها فاإنه من االأفضلاأن جتلس وتفتح اإحدى علب املرطبات وتستوعب املعلومات واأنتتتناول مرشوبك املفضل.‏وعندئذ ‏سوف توافق معنا على اأنه من املوؤكد اأن هذه هي من اأهماملعلومات التي ميكنك احلصول عليها يف اأحد اأيام الصيف احلارة.‏43
