COLLIN POOLE’S WISH – TO BE A POLICEMANDAY ONE!<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Trent</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>nine</strong> <strong>years</strong> <strong>old</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was just 22 m<strong>on</strong>ths <strong>old</strong> whenhe was first diagnosed with a brain tumour. He <strong>is</strong> doing well at the moment but thec<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, metastiatic meduloblastoma, <strong>is</strong> very unpredictable and the future for himand h<strong>is</strong> family <strong>is</strong> uncertain.When <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> t<strong>old</strong> Starlight Children's Foundati<strong>on</strong> that he w<strong>is</strong>hed to be a policeman, hehad no idea what would be in store from him when he travelled down to L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> tohave h<strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>h granted.<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was accompanied by h<strong>is</strong> s<strong>is</strong>ters, Victoria and Samantha, and h<strong>is</strong> parents, Zoëand <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> Senior.The morning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>h, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> and h<strong>is</strong> family were met in their hotel by Claire Limbrey and Laura Smith <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Starlight, and by APS Richard Holliday from the Metropolitan Police Comm<strong>is</strong>si<strong>on</strong>ers Office. Richard camewell equipped with a made-to-measure Metropolitan Police uniform for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Over 15 measurements hadbeen taken to get it right (which <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> had thought was for a new school uniform!).Out <strong>on</strong> patrol in the van, Harry the Dog was spottedhanging out with some mates near the training centre’sskid pan – a c<strong>on</strong>crete bowl with a covering <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> petrol andwater where recruits learn to c<strong>on</strong>trol a skidding vehicle.From there a very exciting chase took place, with plenty<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> screeching tyres and much shouting from Harry,“you’ll never catch me!”. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was hot <strong>on</strong> h<strong>is</strong> tail andshouting, “I’m going to get you”. The arrest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Harry theDog happened so<strong>on</strong> after, but Harry’s accomplice gotaway. From there the police dog dem<strong>on</strong>strated just howsensitive its nose really <strong>is</strong>, tracking the baddy to h<strong>is</strong>hiding place. The baddy tried to do a sec<strong>on</strong>d runner butwas quickly caught by the dog and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was able toarrest him.<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> and h<strong>is</strong> family were driven up to Hend<strong>on</strong>, home <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Hend<strong>on</strong> PoliceCollege where all Metropolitan Police <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers start their training.Once <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> had had a quick stop for a little tea and breakfast, he was swornin the college’s law court reading the words: “I prom<strong>is</strong>e that I will truly servethe Queen as a Junior C<strong>on</strong>stable. I will treat people with fairness, h<strong>on</strong>estyand respect. I will help the police when asked and help stop the baddieswinning. I will do all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> th<strong>is</strong> to the best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my ability. As a Junior C<strong>on</strong>stable, Iprom<strong>is</strong>e to keep my room tidy always and do as my mum and dad tell mebecause they know best.”It was then <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f for the morning’s briefing. The day’s objective was to keep aneye out for renowned criminal Harry the Dog, who had recently committed aburglary. In court, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> took bravely to the witness stand to giveevidence against Harry the Dog. The judge looked <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>sternly in the eye, “How l<strong>on</strong>g have you been a Junior PoliceC<strong>on</strong>stable?”. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> replied, “5 hours”. The evidence againstHarry the Dog was pretty damning and so<strong>on</strong> the case wasc<strong>on</strong>cluded. There was an outburst from the Defendant… hecouldn’t help but stand up and say that he’d been <strong>on</strong> the runfor weeks, and he’s never seen such brilliant police work orsuch a great c<strong>on</strong>stable as PC<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g>! <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> beamed fromear to ear. Even the baddy wasimpressed!DAY TWO!The excitement wasn’t over yet for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>. He was v<strong>is</strong>ited by the helicopterbranch <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Metropolitan police who showed him round the cockpit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thehelicopter and taught him all they knew!The day’s events were fin<strong>is</strong>hed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f with a presentati<strong>on</strong> from Chief Inspector NickBatt, head <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> training at Hend<strong>on</strong> in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all the centre’s recruits. CI Battbestowed the highest h<strong>on</strong>our that can be given to a new recruit <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> – thebat<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>on</strong>our. The hall was filled with cheers and many a tear was shed bythe family and recruits alike.In order to experience as many policing d<strong>is</strong>ciplines as possible, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>was now treated to a trip to Imber Court in Surrey to the MetropolitanPolice Mounted Branch training centre. At Imber Court, horses (andriders) receive extensive training so they are ready for the many rolesthey will need to carry out. At first, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> wasn’t sure he could handlethe smell <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the horses but h<strong>is</strong> nose so<strong>on</strong> got used to it and he lovedmeeting them! <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> and Victoria even took part in a horse’s training.They waved large flags, blew <strong>on</strong> theirpolice wh<strong>is</strong>tles, and used a smokemachine to expose the horse to thepossible no<strong>is</strong>es experienced <strong>on</strong> thestreet! The centre’s farrier made <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>a horseshoe the traditi<strong>on</strong>al way and thevet showed every<strong>on</strong>e x-rays <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thehorses. To top it all, the family wereable, <strong>on</strong>e by <strong>on</strong>e, to ride a beautifulhorse called Wellard who has takenpart in many a cerem<strong>on</strong>y as wellpreviously being seriously injured <strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>t line duty.Next, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f to 10 DowningStreet. From there <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> and h<strong>is</strong> family were welcomed in for a private tour,which started with the fascinating h<strong>is</strong>tory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Cabinet Room. Therethe family were joined by Cherie Booth QC. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> proudly showed herthe criminal he had arrested the day before (Harry the Dog) and t<strong>old</strong> herto keep an eye out for him just in case he escaped. The Prime Min<strong>is</strong>terthen popped out from h<strong>is</strong> meeting to say hello to the MetropolitanPolice’s youngest ever Police C<strong>on</strong>stable. PC <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> became a little shyand hid behind h<strong>is</strong> mum. Mr Blair said that h<strong>is</strong> s<strong>on</strong> Leo would be just asshy and t<strong>old</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> that he was not to worry!The family were taken up the ic<strong>on</strong>ic staircase,followed by the eyes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the previous primemin<strong>is</strong>ters, to a beautiful room where they hadtea with Mrs Blair. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s were keen to ask how normal the Blairs’ livescould be and asked about security and what the family will be doing next.After tea, the tour c<strong>on</strong>tinued, through 10 Downing Street’s beautiful rooms.Finally, Mr Blair showed much kindness: PC <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> had become much braver andnow w<strong>is</strong>hed to have h<strong>is</strong> picture taken with the Prime Min<strong>is</strong>ter.Mr Blair kindly came out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>is</strong> meeting and posed for a photograph with <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>.Just when the Prime Min<strong>is</strong>ter thought the photographic sessi<strong>on</strong> had ended, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>borrowed the photographer’s camera and took h<strong>is</strong> own photo <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mr Blair. The PMsaid he thought it very good and prom<strong>is</strong>ed to sign a printed versi<strong>on</strong>!Finally, in New Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police Comm<strong>is</strong>si<strong>on</strong>er, Sir IanBlair, questi<strong>on</strong>ed h<strong>is</strong> newest and youngest recruit. He was impressed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>’sarrest and heard about all that <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> had been up to. He presented every<strong>on</strong>e inthe <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> family with their own gift and posed for <strong>on</strong>e final photograph with JPC<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g>. It was a dream come true for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> and h<strong>is</strong> family.Metropolitan Police Comm<strong>is</strong>si<strong>on</strong>er Sir Ian Blair said, “The Metropolitan PoliceService <strong>is</strong> very proud <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our youngest ever 'recruit' Junior PC <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In just twodays with us he d<strong>is</strong>played impressive skills in arrest and wore h<strong>is</strong> uniform with pride. Ihave every c<strong>on</strong>fidence that JPC <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> will perform to the best <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>is</strong> ability h<strong>is</strong> pledge tohelp the police and stop the bad guys winning and I know my <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers enjoyed working withthe <str<strong>on</strong>g>Poole</str<strong>on</strong>g> family and Starlight to make <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s dream <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> being a police <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficer come true."<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s dad said, “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g> was diagnosed at 22 m<strong>on</strong>ths and has been through a lotduring the last seven <strong>years</strong>. Given everything he has had to suffer, h<strong>is</strong> Starlight w<strong>is</strong>hhas made a real difference. The w<strong>is</strong>h gave him something to look forward to and reallyhelped him get through h<strong>is</strong> treatment and illness. The w<strong>is</strong>h itself was magnificent andsuch a boost. We are still buzzing. We see in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Collin</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s eyes how much it has brightened uph<strong>is</strong> life. We’ve really noticed a big difference in him already. It’s amazing. Plus, without adoubt, he’s the boss now! We took him into school in h<strong>is</strong> uniform th<strong>is</strong> afterno<strong>on</strong> and heloved showing the photos and himself <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f to friends and teachers! He’s just over themo<strong>on</strong>.
