A GUIDE TO VENTILATIONVENTILATION CONSIDERATIONSEffective ventilation is now a primaryconsideration in the design and constructionof all buildings.Greater use of sealed heating systems, doubleglazing, and increased insulation combinedwith the moisture created in kitchens andbathrooms, makes efficient ventilation ahigh priority. There are many issues facing the designer ofventilation installations in today's buildings. They include: the assessment of correctextraction rates, the power and correctsiting of the extractor, establishing the sourceof return air, whilst taking into accountenergy saving issues and the correct choiceof ducting through which air mustefficiently flow.WHERE TO SITE YOUR FANOne of the main problems that can reduce theefficiency of an extractor fan is poor siting. There are a number of basic rules that can beapplied in order to ensure that a fan iscorrectly sited:Rules• Always install the fan in the furthestwindow, wall or ceiling from the main airinlet point and at a high level. This willensure maximum airflow of fresh airthroughout the whole room.• Always ensure that there is sufficientprovision for replacement fresh air into theroom by using internal grilles in the door, ceiling or wall.• If installing a fan in a room containing afuel-burning device which has a nonbalancedflue, there must be sufficientreplacement air to prevent fumes beingdrawn down the flue when the fan is onmaximum extract. (See BS 5440 & BuildingRegulations for specific requirements.)• Exhaust air must not be discharged into aflue used for exhausting fumes fromappliances supplied with energy other thanelectricity. When deciding the method forexhaust air discharge and intake flow rates, the requirements of all relevant authoritiesmust be strictly adhered to.• Do not site fans where temperatures arelikely to exceed 40ºC.• Wiring should be carried out in accordancewith current IEE Regulations (UK) orstandards of the country in question.• Ensure that the instructions provided arefollowed during installation, with particularcare taken to check the supply voltage, fuserating and wiring are correct.• IEE regulations require mains voltage fansto be positioned out of arms reach of theperson using the bath or shower.i.e. Outside zone 0,1 or 2 as stated inamendment 3 of B7671:1992. Mainsvoltage fans and controls should also besited away from potential water spray.• Always use an In-line Duct or SafetyExtra Low Voltage (SELV) fan to ventilatea shower cubicle (zone 1). The mainsvoltage transformer control unit with SELVoutput must be positioned away from anypotential water spray and out of arms’reach (outside of zone 0, 1 or 2) of theperson using the bath or shower.• If the duct passes through an unheated roofvoid the duct should be insulated to reducethe formation of condensation. A verticalduct should also be installed with aweatherproof roof cowl of sufficient freearea for the air volume. A condensationtrap must be fitted in order to release thecondensation build up. Horizontal ductsshould fall away from the fan unit.• If the duct passes through a firecompartment wall, a Domus FireBrakemust be used to maintain the integrityin accordance with B3 Building Regulationsof 2000 and 2002.The solid red arrow shows correct airflow3

A GUIDE TO VENTILATIONFAN SELECTIONThe extraction rates recommended by the UKBuilding Regulations should be seen as theminimum requirement. A more accuratemethod of calculating the optimum rate, or ifthe room to be ventilated is not covered bythe Regulations, is as follows:1. Measure the length, breadth and heightof the room (in metres) and multiply themtogether to obtain the room volume in cubicmetres.2. Multiply the room volume by therecommended number of air changes perhour, shown on the table, to achieve theextract rate of the fan in m 3 /hr.3. Select a fan with a duty the same as, orexceeding, the calculated extract rate.eg: Bathroom 2.5m x 2m x 2.3m x 8 ach =92m 3 /hr.Fan selected: T1/T1R extracting 94m 3 /hr.RoomAirchangesper hourBathrooms 6 - 8Bedrooms 2 - 4Billiard Rooms 6 - 8Cafes and Coffee Bars 10 - 15Canteens 8 - 12Cellars 3 - 10Club Rooms 8 - 10Conference Rooms 6 - 10Entrance Halls, Corridors 3 - 5Factories and Workshops 6 - 10Garages 6 - 10Gymnasiums 6Hairdressing Salons 10 - 15Hotel Bars 6 - 10Kitchens - Domestic 10 - 15Laboratories 4 - 15RoomAirchangesper hourLaunderettes 10 - 15Laundries 10 - 15Lecture Theatres 6 - 10Libraries 3 - 4Living Rooms 4 - 6Offices 4 - 6Photo and X-ray Darkrooms 6 - 8Public House Bars 6 - 8Restaurants 10 - 15School rooms8.3 l/s/PersonShops and Supermarkets 8 - 10Shower/Bathrooms 15 - 20Stores and Warehouses 3 - 6Toilets (Public)5+ or 6 l/s/PanToilets (Domestic) 6 - 10Utility Rooms 15 - 20PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONSEnsuring air quality of the highest standardsignificantly reduces the problems caused bydamp, condensation and unwanted smellsthat may prove a risk to the inhabitants orstructure of a building.Inadequate ventilation can cause manyproblems:• Condensation.• Dampness and potential mould growth.• Unwanted kitchen smells throughoutthe house.• Old and stale air remaining in the buildingresulting in a lack of new, fresh andhealthy air. These problems create a building that has anunpleasant living environment. However, appropriate action can be taken.• Always turn the fan on before bathing, taking a shower or cooking.• Always close internal doors leading toother parts of the building.• Always allow a buffer zone after bathing, showering or cooking by keeping the fanturned on for a short period of time.• Always fit the correct size of ducting toensure maximum performance of the fan.The following pages are designed togive guidance on general ventilationducting installation.5

A GUIDE TO VENTILATIONCHOOSING AND INSTALLINGTHE CORRECT DUCTINGBecause it is normally hidden, a ductingsystem is often not considered an importantpart of the construction or refurbishment ofa building. However, the importance of thecorrect ducting is slowly becomingrecognised by the building industry. It is not always the fault of the cookerhood/fan manufacturer when dreams of freshrooms and low noise fans are not achieved. It can often be that the wrong size orconfiguration of ducting has been selectedby the installer or system designer. As it cannot be seen, air movement is oftenmade more complicated than it actually is.Air moves just as water moves and it issometimes useful to visualise a problem bysubstituting air with water. In ventilation installations the aim is normallyto move the air from its source to the outsideof the house as efficiently and quietly aspossible. It is, therefore, common sense thatto do this effectively, the shorter the distancethe air has to travel, the quicker the aim isachieved. It is also common sense that if anobstacle is put in the way, such as a bend, the process will become more difficult as theair will lose its momentum and may requiremore powerful assistance in order to achievethe aim.Extractor fans vary in power just as cars doand the results are reflected in much thesame way. A high performance/specificationcar should be quieter, last longer andgenerally provide the driver with morecomfortable and satisfactory results. However, to ensure this, the car needs astraight smooth road on which to traveleffectively. The road for the air to travelwhen using an extractor fan is the ducting.Again, it is common sense that a morepowerful fan would need a more efficientduct - a Rolls Royce owner would notconsider driving their car in off-roadconditions! It is worth remembering thatmany cooker hood manufacturers’guarantees will be invalidated it the correctsize of ducting is not used to match thepower of the hood.A few key installation guidelines can beapplied to help ensure that the ductingselection is correct and installed in a waythat optimises the extractor’s performance.• Choose the shortest and most direct routeto the outside or the point where the air isto be released. Do not expect too much ofyour extraction unit - try blowing at afriend 3 or 4m away and see if they canfeel anything!• Ensure that bends are kept to a minimum.• Check the extraction capability andconnection size of the fan and choose anappropriate size duct. Refer to the fanmanufacturer for performance ratings.• Air travels better through a round duct, asthe air will travel at a lower speed, resulting in less turbulence, vibration, noise and energy loss. However, theinstallation space available may preventthis ideal.• A rigid duct is more efficient than a flexibleduct and should be used when possible.• If flexible hose is used, the hose shouldremain taut and as straight as possible.• Special consideration should also be givento the selection of the wall terminal andthe use of back draft dampers, as thesealso increase air resistance.• Refer to the F1 Building Regulations (seepages 3 and 4).In principle, the actual installation may meanthat all the above points cannot be adheredto, but Domus has the products to providethe best solution.TYPES OF DUCTINGRound Pipe DuctingA round duct provides optimum airflowperformance and should be used ifinstallation space allows. Domus has aselection of bends and adapters to meetmost installation requirements.Rectangular Ducting (Flat Channel)Rectangular or flat channel ducting is anexcellent alternative when space isrestricted. Its low profile enables the ductingto be easily concealed in the ceiling void oralong the top of wall units. Domus has aselection of bends and adapters to meetmost installation requirements.Flexible Hose DuctingFlexible hose is available in round andrectangular form, to complement the rigidsystems. It provides a solution to overcomeawkward situations where a rigid systemcannot be installed. Flexible hose is mosteffective for slow moving air, such aswith tumble dryers, but can be used withhigher volume appliances (with due caretaken to ensure that its use is limitedand that the hose is kept as taut and straightas possible).6

A GUIDE TO VENTILATIONUNDERSTANDING DUCTINGPERFORMANCE FIGURESAs has already been explained, theperformance of the fan is dependent on theperformance capability of the fan itself, thesize of the duct, the ducting configurationand the type of wall terminal installed. Each ducting run can be planned in advanceand its performance levels evaluated so itcan be ascertained if the desired installationwill meet the required level.Technical data is available for the extractorfan/cooker hood installer or system designerin order to achieve the optimum overallextraction rate. This data highlights howmuch pressure (measured in Pascals) isgenerated in the ducting run and will show ifthe required airflow rate can be achieved.Pressure(Pa)200150100500High PressureLow PressureLow Flowrate15 30 60 80Flowrate (l/s)High FlowrateThe diagram above shows a typical pressureflowratecurve for an extractor fan or cookerhood (flow rate information should beavailable from the fan/cooker hoodmanufacturer). The information it contains isobtained by a series of laboratorymeasurements starting with free flow at zeropressure, then, by steadily increasing thepressure that the fan has to operate against, the volume flow and pressure at each pointis derived in order to plot the curve. As detailed in the diagram, in order toachieve the current UK Building Regulationflow rate requirement for a kitchen of 60 l/s(or 216 m 3 /hr, 30 l/s or 108 m 3 /hr, for a hoodwithin 300mm of hob centreline), themaximum duct system resistance when usingthis particular cooker hood can be no greaterthan 150 Pascals (Pa). Therefore, it can bereadily seen that by reducing the resistanceof the duct system, the extract performanceof the fan or cooker hood is increased.Furthermore, it can be stated that a ductingsystem with a low resistance is a ductsystem with a good performance. The performance of a ducting system isgreatly affected by both the overall length ofthe ducting, the number of bends containedwithin it and the type of outlet. The totalresistance of the duct system can becalculated by simply adding up theresistance of each component. Each productwithin the Domus range has a measuredresistance value for the three UK BuildingRegulation flow rates. These figures aredetailed within the ducting system sectionsof this catalogue, against each component.Note: For every extractor fan or cooker hoodinstallation, provision should be made formake-up or return air. In most dwellings thisis catered for by natural leakage. However, some high performance products mayrequire the installation of an air supply set(see page 37-38).The following is a calculation example usingthe typical ducting layout shown in thediagram. Therefore the airflow performance of thecooker hood connected should exceed39 Pa @ 30 l/s.System Configuration (as kit 227)ResistanceProduct Description (Pa) @ 30 l/s2 x 510 1m Flat Channel (2 off) 3.01 x 520 Flat Channel Connector 0.41 x 541 Elbow Bend with 125mm Spigot 11.11 x 561 125mm Flexible Hose, 1m 0.7*1 x 501 Airbrick with Damper 23.8Total 39.0* Based on a 1m length of 125mm pipe, presuming that the hose is pulled taut.Within the Ducting section, in order toencourage good practice (for guidanceonly) each system is supported with anicon depicting the application for which itis suited.TECHNICAL ADVICEDomus offers expert technical advice on allventilation installations and has individualdimensioned drawings available on request.www.domusventilation.com7

Kits will fit 100mm,125mm or 150mm diameter connectionsproviding an option for fans with differentextraction rates. They are available in roundand rectangular form. There are also kits designed to provide returnair for cooker hoods and combustion air toopen-flued appliances, such as, centralheating boilers and fires.Domus standard kits are provided, wherenecessary, with installation instructions andare packed in purpose made cardboardcartons. If the range of standard kits does notprovide a suitable answer, bespoke kits canbe designed to meet the exact specification ofthe installation.Outlet ColoursAll kits come with a choice of colour for theexternal outlet of white, brown, terracotta orcotswold (beige). All internal outlets andducting are supplied in white only. The colourof external outlet required must be statedwhen ordering.Fixing KitsSome kits contain a fixing kit. This consistsof: 8 wall plugs and screws for wall outletfixing and 4 adhesive (single sided) foam padsto aid loose fits.AIR SUPPLY SETSTypical usageAn extractor fan removes air causing thepressure in the room to drop if not replaced.A lack of supply causes the windows to mistup and also increases the noise from thecooker hood motor, as it has to work harder. In order to prevent this the airflow must bebalanced by ensuring an adequate amount ofreturn air back into the room.A Domus air supply kit should be installed intoan outside wall of the room, preferablyopposite to the extraction unit.37

BOXED KITSAIR SUPPLY SETS CONT.Great care must be taken to ensure that theamount of air back flow provided is at leastequal to the combined consumption andextraction rate of all appliances. It is recommended that an air supply setshould be installed in every room where air isbeing mechanically removed.WARNING!Open flued appliances, such as an Aga cookeror a gas fired hot water appliance maintainscombustion by burning air from the kitchen. An extraction unit removing air from thekitchen without return air can starve theappliance of enough oxygen and in somecases can cause a reversal of flue gases, whichcan cause carbon monoxide poisoning. If an open flued appliance coexists with anextraction unit, then the extraction unit andits air supply vents must conform to theBuilding Regulations and a BS5440 productspillage test should be undertaken with theextracting appliance in operation. Gas hobs, gas ovens and balanced flue (room sealed)appliances are exempt from this test.Balanced flue boilers have no permanentlyopen air leakage paths and are therefore notaffected by air extraction.A selection of air supply sets is available tomeet most domestic requirements. FIREBRAKE● Meets the requirements of Approved Document Bof the UK Building Regulations● Meets the requirements of NHBC Standard(April 2004) 8.1-S2 (f)● Tested by BRE to BS 476 Part 20:1987 and prEN 1366-3● 2 hour fire rating● Available for all five sizes of Domus flat channelducting systems48The Domus FireBrake is a unique, scientificallyadvanced intumescent product to prevent thespread of fire through plastic ventilation ductingsystems. It has been designed specifically for itsintended purpose.Fire prevention is a serious concern. BuildingRegulations state that when a compartment wallis penetrated an approved fire-stopping deviceshould be installed. The purpose is to containfire spread that could be harmful to life, and tomaintain the integrity of the building for as longas possible.FireBrake reacts to the heat from the fire andexpands inwards stopping the spread of the fireby quickly providing a 100% closed fire stopseal.FireBrake has been designed with safety of thehouseholder as its primary concern. This givesthe installer unparalleled peace of mind that theinstallation is fit for purpose and will passinspection by Building Control.FireBrake allows simple but effective installationto deal with most common problems faced onsite which often make alternative options likefire collars and wraps unsuitable.Due to its construction, design features, anduser friendly nature you can specify and installFireBrake with confidence.FireBrake is available for all five sizes of Domusflat channel ducting systems.Quick and easy installationDomus FireBrake is very simple to install. Its user friendly nature avoidsimprovisation during fitting particularlyin areas that are difficult to access. This is a significant advantage over wrapsand collars.FireBrake ensures professionalinstallation. It is the correct fire stop for allDomus rectangular ventilation ducting. In most fire-stopping applications twocollars or wraps are required, one oneither side. Thus FireBrake can providesubstantial cost savings, especiallyin installation time. No maintenanceis required. For masonry or stud walls andconcrete floorsDomus FireBrake is designed for multipurposeinstallation. For stud walls thesteel casing (fitted as standard) ensuresthat the product closes inwards. The125mm length of FireBrake is sufficient toprevent it falling through a stud wall oncethe duct has melted away. This is not thecase with most collars. Wraps are notsuitable for use within stud walls.Robust ConstructionDomus FireBrake is strong enough to copewith the rigours of transportation and thehazardous environment on building sites. Its sturdy nature inspires confidence that itwill be fit for purpose. No additional fixings necessaryThe Domus FireBrake does not requireadditional fixings, such as screws andmetal anchors. This saves considerabletime and money on site.Forms an integral part of theducting systemDomus FireBrake acts as a connector. It can be incorporated as part of theducting system design providing aseamless configuration.Designed to put safety firstDomus FireBrake helps prevent carelessinstallation. This is a common problemwith wraps and collars as they are difficultto work with. Careless installation canresult in failure under fire conditions.

FIREBRAKECareful attention has been made to ensure that thewall thickness of the FireBrake is sufficient to give100% closure thus providing a safe, effective andrapid fire stop seal. The 125mm length of theFireBrake also gives added protection whencompared to the size of most alternatives.FireBrake instills confidence that it will performwhen most needed. The length of the product andthe red steel casing allow easy verification byBuilding Control during inspection. Verification is acommon problem when using wraps as they areoften hidden.INSTALLATIONMasonry Walls and ConcreteFloorsFireBrake connectors are suitable for use inmasonry walls and concrete floors of up to150mm in thickness to provide up to andincluding 2 hours of fire protection (fig. 1).150 mmFig. 1 maximumFig. 2For installations in masonry walls or floorsof thickness greater than 150mm, two closecoupledFireBrakes must be used joinedtogether using a 125mm length of ducting(fig. 2).125 mmDUCT>150 mmTESTEDStud WallsFireBrakes are also suitable for use in studwalls of up to a maximum of 125mm thick(fig. 3c). The rugged steel casing containsthe expansion of the intumescent when aFireBrake is installed in a stud wall.It is imperative that the FireBrake is firmlysupported on its underside by a noggin orsimilar structural cross-member (fig. 3a &3c). Otherwise the general installationguidelines apply.Independent Fire Test: 1 - wrap on one sideonly; 2 - collar fitted on one side only; 3 - wraps onboth sides; 4 - the Domus FireBrake centred withinthe wall; 5 - collars fitted on both sides of the wall.Fig. 3a= =Fig. 3bImportant – Do not reduce or cut thelength of the FireBrake as this will have adetrimental effect on the performance ofFig. 3c125 mmmaximumthe product.FireBrake is not suitable for use with metalducting. After 5 minutes: The Domus FireBrake (No. 4) isalready creating an effective fire stop seal. After 2 hours: FireBrake (No. 4) has maintained itsfire stop closure whilst the traditional products failed.General Installation GuidelinesA. Position the FireBrake Connector evenlywithin the fabric of the compartment wall toprovide a firm support for the ducting. If it is necessary to position the FireBrakeunevenly within a masonry wall, forexample, when making an immediate rightangledbend in the duct system, ensure thata minimum of 75mm of the FireBrakelength is contained within the fabric of thewall (fig. 4). Note the constraints of point B.B. Important - Ensure that the ends of theFireBrake remain visible; this allows bothrapid activation of the intumescent in theevent of a fire and also provides BuildingControl with easy access for identificationfor either auditing or fire risk assessmentpurposes.Removal of the outer label is unnecessary.C. There must be no more than a 12mmvoid in the fabric of the wall around any oneside of the FireBrake. Gaps and voids inexcess of 12mm should be made good withcement or mortar.D. Gaps around FireBrake of up to 12mmshould be made good with Domus MAS87Acoustic Intumescent Mastic to provideboth a complete smoke seal and areduction in sound transmission throughthe duct system (fig.5).E.
