WHERE TO SITE YOUR FANOne of the main problems that can reduce theefficiency of an extractor fan is poor siting. Thereare a number of basic rules that can be applied inorder to ensure that a fan is correctly sited:Rules• Always install the fan in the furthest window,wall or ceiling from the main air inlet point andat a high level. This will ensure maximum airflowof fresh air throughout the whole room.• Always ensure that there is sufficient provisionfor replacement fresh air into the room by usinginternal grilles in the door, ceiling or wall.• If installing a fan in a room containing a fuelburningdevice which has a non-balanced flue,there must be sufficient replacement air toprevent fumes being drawn down the flue whenthe fan is on maximum extract. (See BS 5440 &Building Regulations for specific requirements.)• Exhaust air must not be discharged into a flueused for exhausting fumes from appliancessupplied with energy other than electricity. Whendeciding the method for exhaust air dischargeand intake flow rates, the requirements of allrelevant authorities must be strictly adhered to.• Do not site fans where temperatures are likely toexceed 40ºC.• Wiring should be carried out in accordance withcurrent IEE Regulations (UK) or standards of thecountry in question.• Ensure that the instructions provided arefollowed during installation, with particular caretaken to check the supply voltage, fuse ratingand wiring are correct.• IEE regulations require mains voltagefans to be positioned out of arm’s reachof the person using the bath or shower,i.e. outside zone 0, 1 or 2 as stated in B7671.Mains voltage fans and controls should also besited away from potential water spray.• Always use an In-line Duct or Safety Extra LowVoltage (SELV) fan to ventilate a shower cubicle(zone 1). The mains voltage transformer controlunit with SELV output must be positioned awayfrom any potential water spray and out of arm’sreach (outside of zone 0, 1 or 2) of the personusing the bath or shower.• If the duct passes through an unheated roofvoid the duct should be insulated to reducethe formation of condensation. A vertical ductshould also be installed with a weatherproof roofcowl of sufficient free area for the air volume.A condensation trap must be fitted in order torelease the condensation build up. Horizontalducts should fall away from the fan unit.• If the duct passes through a fire compartmentwall, a Domus FireBrake must be used tomaintain the integrity in accordance withApproved Document B Building Regulations.The solid red arrow shows correct airflow3

2.4mTechnical AdviceUNDERSTANDING ZONESWhen siting a fan, consideration also needs to begiven to the positioning of the fan in relation to theelectrical wiring.Zone 0 is defined as the interior of the bath or showertray.Zone 1 is limited by:(i) the finished floor level and the horizontal planecorresponding to the highest fixed showerhead orwater outlet or the horizontal plane lying 2.25m abovethe finished floor level, whichever is higher; and(ii) the vertical surface:a) circumscribing the bathtub or shower basin; orb) at a distance of 1.2m from the centre point ofthe fixed water outlet on the wall or ceiling forshowers without a basin.BUILDING REGULATIONSSince 1990 the UK Building Regulations haverecognised the importance of ventilationin domestic dwellings, with the publicationof Document F1 and from this date all newbuildings and approved extensions mustmake provision for ventilation in kitchens,utility rooms, bathrooms, shower roomsand WCs.Polypipe Ventilation has always advocatedthe need for ventilation in order to create ahealthier living environment. The productsshown in this catalogue all exceed the currentrevision of the UK Building Regulations whenused in the correct application.The recommended extract rate for a domestickitchen is 60 l/s, that can be reduced to30 l/s if a cooker hood is used or the extractfan is over the hob. Utility rooms if accessiblefrom inside the dwelling: 30 l/s; bathroomsand shower rooms: 15 l/s and separate WCs:6 l/s. In addition, if any of the rooms havenon-openable windows, the extract fan mustincorporate a timer capable of a 15 minuteoverrun.The table summarises the requirements that theF1 Building Regulations place on the efficientventilation of rooms. Although this table appliesspecifically to England, Wales and Scotland,it can be applied as a general guide for mostcountries, although climatic conditions mayhave an effect on the requirements.Zone 1 does not contain Zone 0. FAN SELECTIONThe extraction rates recommended by the UKBuilding Regulations should be seen as theminimum requirement. A more accurate methodof calculating the optimum rate, or if the room tobe ventilated is not covered by the Regulations, isas follows:1. Measure the length, breadth and height of theroom (in metres) and multiply them together toobtain the room volume in cubic metres.2. Multiply the room volume by the recommendednumber of air changes per hour, shown on thetable, to achieve the extract rate of the fan inm 3 /hr.3. Thisdata highlights how much pressure (measured inPascals) is generated in the ducting run and willshow if the required airflow rate can be achieved.The diagram above shows a typical pressureflowratecurve for an extractor fan or cooker hood(flow rate information should be available from thefan/cooker hood manufacturer). The informationit contains is obtained by a series of laboratorymeasurements starting with free flow at zeropressure, then, by steadily increasing the pressurethat the fan has to operate against, the volumeflow and pressure at each point is derived in orderto plot the curve.7

Technical AdviceAs detailed in the diagram, in order to achievethe current UK Building Regulation flow raterequirement for a kitchen of 60 l/s (or 216m 3 /hr,30 l/s or 108m 3 /hr, for a hood within 300mm of hobcentreline), the maximum duct system resistancewhen using this particular cooker hood can be nogreater than 150 Pascals (Pa). Therefore, it can bereadily seen that by reducing the resistance of theduct system, the extract performance of the fan orcooker hood is increased. Furthermore, it can bestated that a ducting system with a low resistanceis a duct system with a good performance.The performance of a ducting system is greatlyaffected by both the overall length of the ducting,the number of bends contained within it andthe type of outlet. The system fit is also vital, asincompatible and poorly-fitting duct increases therisk of air and condensation leakage. Therefore, itis important to have a single source of supply foryour ducting products. The total resistance of theduct system can be calculated by simply addingup the resistance of each component. Eachproduct within the Domus range has a measuredresistance value for the three UK BuildingRegulation flow rates. These figures are detailedwithin this catalogue.Note: For every extractor fan or cooker hoodinstallation, provision should be made formake-up or return air. In most dwellings thisis catered for by natural leakage.
