FIREBRAKECareful attention has been made to ensure that thewall thickness of the FireBrake is sufficient to give100% closure thus providing a safe, effective andrapid fire stop seal. The 125mm length of theFireBrake also gives added protection whencompared to the size of most alternatives.FireBrake instills confidence that it will performwhen most needed. The length of the product andthe red steel casing allow easy verification byBuilding Control during inspection. Verification is acommon problem when using wraps as they areoften hidden.INSTALLATIONMasonry Walls and ConcreteFloorsFireBrake connectors are suitable for use inmasonry walls and concrete floors of up to150mm in thickness to provide up to andincluding 2 hours of fire protection (fig. 1).150 mmFig. 1 maximumFig. 2For installations in masonry walls or floorsof thickness greater than 150mm, two closecoupledFireBrakes must be used joinedtogether using a 125mm length of ducting(fig. 2).125 mmDUCT>150 mmTESTEDStud WallsFireBrakes are also suitable for use in studwalls of up to a maximum of 125mm thick(fig. 3c). The rugged steel casing containsthe expansion of the intumescent when aFireBrake is installed in a stud wall.It is imperative that the FireBrake is firmlysupported on its underside by a noggin orsimilar structural cross-member (fig. 3a &3c). Otherwise the general installationguidelines apply.Independent Fire Test: 1 - wrap on one sideonly; 2 - collar fitted on one side only; 3 - wraps onboth sides; 4 - the Domus FireBrake centred withinthe wall; 5 - collars fitted on both sides of the wall.Fig. 3a= =Fig. 3bImportant – Do not reduce or cut thelength of the FireBrake as this will have adetrimental effect on the performance ofFig. 3c125 mmmaximumthe product.FireBrake is not suitable for use with metalducting.After 5 minutes: The Domus FireBrake (No. 4) isalready creating an effective fire stop seal.After 2 hours: FireBrake (No. 4) has maintained itsfire stop closure whilst the traditional products failed.General Installation GuidelinesA. Position the FireBrake Connector evenlywithin the fabric of the compartment wall toprovide a firm support for the ducting.If it is necessary to position the FireBrakeunevenly within a masonry wall, forexample, when making an immediate rightangledbend in the duct system, ensure thata minimum of 75mm of the FireBrakelength is contained within the fabric of thewall (fig. 4). Note the constraints of point B.B. Important - Ensure that the ends of theFireBrake remain visible; this allows bothrapid activation of the intumescent in theevent of a fire and also provides BuildingControl with easy access for identificationfor either auditing or fire risk assessmentpurposes.Removal of the outer label is unnecessary.C. There must be no more than a 12mmvoid in the fabric of the wall around any oneside of the FireBrake. Gaps and voids inexcess of 12mm should be made good withcement or mortar.D. Gaps around FireBrake of up to 12mmshould be made good with Domus MAS87Acoustic Intumescent Mastic to provideboth a complete smoke seal and areduction in sound transmission throughthe duct system (fig.5).E.
