At this centre every year some 5,000 students from different nationalitiesgather <strong>to</strong> develop and perfect their language skills.Each of you has your own reason for studying a language. Languages in actionOur programme is designed <strong>to</strong> offer you the course whichbest suits your needs. Whatever your objective <strong>to</strong> studya language, we are confident we can help you achievethat goal.Our approach is action and result oriented. This meansit aims <strong>to</strong> develop effective communication skills ratherthan just offer theoretical knowledge of the languageand phrases that sound artificial in real life.Naturally, knowledge of the language is essential but isnot an end in itself. It is functional in that it enables you<strong>to</strong> perform successfully in work, education, public orsocial settings.T<strong>here</strong>fore we start out from real life tasks and provideyou a stimulating and interactive environment in whichall your language skills -but most importantly yourspeaking skills- can constantly progress. Your ability<strong>to</strong> communicate in another language will be enhanced.You take another step <strong>to</strong>wards becoming a world citizen.Various tracksBecause we know some of you will wish <strong>to</strong> learn fasterthan others or may prefer <strong>to</strong> study from home at theirown pace, various learning programmes are availablefor several languages and levels.The standard courses consist of modules of 120 hoursand are taught on a yearly basis. Most of these courseshave one session per week.The intensive courses allow you <strong>to</strong> learn quickly,combining 2 years of 120 hours in<strong>to</strong> one year of 140 hours(2 modules of 70 hours).Blended learning courses offer you the advantages ofclassroom-based training integrated with the flexibilityof e-learning, combining 50% face-<strong>to</strong>-face sessionswith 50% interactive learning and individual tu<strong>to</strong>ringfrom home.Free blended learning sample lessons can be foundon www.clt.be > Programmes > Blended learning.5


User levelsOur curriculum objectives and levels are in line withthe level descriptions in the Common EuropeanFramework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).This framework allows you <strong>to</strong> compare the level oflanguage courses and exam qualifications of differentschools across Europe and define 6 levels of languageproficiency: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.We work in an integrated manner w<strong>here</strong>by listening,speaking, reading and writing skills are well balanced.Below you find a global description of the differentlevels and objectives:Basic User• A1 BreakthroughHere you start as an absolute beginner. You learnthe language fundamentals so you can communicatebasic messages in daily situations. At this level youask and answer straightforward questions concerningyourself, your immediate surroundings and needs.You interact in a simple way. You can understandthe main points in simple announcements andnotices, fill in forms and write short messages.You learn <strong>to</strong> communicate in single words andshort phrases. You master the basics in terms ofvocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation.• A2 WaystageAt this level you evolve <strong>to</strong> self-reliance. You developfrom a beginner <strong>to</strong> a basic user successfully makingyourself unders<strong>to</strong>od in familiar situations of daily life.You can exchange information about yourself, the directworld around you and necessities in daily life. You canhandle short social exchanges, understand the mainpoints in everyday messages, announcements, menusor ads and write simple notes and personal letters.6


You become more practiced in putting <strong>to</strong>gether longerphrases. Your knowledge of vocabulary, grammar,spelling and pronunciation is consolidated and allowsyou <strong>to</strong> cope with routine tasks and exchange personalinformation with more confidence.Independent User• B1 ThresholdAt this level you will be more independent in everydaycommunication and should be able <strong>to</strong> have morefluent conversations not only about yourself andyour immediate surroundings but also about theworld you live in (work, travel, current events).You learn <strong>to</strong> tell s<strong>to</strong>ries, describe your reactionsand give explanations for opinions and plans.You understand the main point of articles and mediaprogrammes on current affairs or <strong>to</strong>pics of personaland professional interest. You are capable of writingtexts like a short travel blog or film reviews and ofdescribing experiences and impressions.• B2 VantageWhen you start this level, you have the ability <strong>to</strong>communicate au<strong>to</strong>nomously in familiar and everydaysituations. You will now develop your language skills<strong>to</strong> become more fluent in a broader set of situations.You learn <strong>to</strong> express and support your opinion aboutgeneral, social subjects and do so in co<strong>here</strong>nt text,both orally and in writing. You can take an activepart in discussions, exploring the advantages anddisadvantages of various options. Moreover,you succeed in relating a s<strong>to</strong>ry cohesively and witheffect, and can present clear, detailed descriptionson a wide range of subjects. You understand mostcurrent affairs programmes or articles, even morecomplex lines of argument and can identifythe speaker’s or writer’s viewpoint.Your vocabulary becomes more precise and yourgrammar, spelling and pronunciation are accurate.Your vocabulary and grammar expand, and yourspelling and pronunciation improve.7


Proficient User• C1 EffectivenessNow is the time <strong>to</strong> develop from an independentlanguage user <strong>to</strong> a proficient language user. Level C1means you have the capacity <strong>to</strong> communicate effectivelyon any possible <strong>to</strong>pic and in any context.Confident of your language abilities, you are ready<strong>to</strong> communicate and argue your opinion on subjectsrelated <strong>to</strong> your own environment and broad socialor abstract themes. You firmly stand your groundin discussions and can use language flexibly andeffectively for social and professional purposes.You narrate, present and describe with precisionand even humour. You can understand nuances,details and implicit meaning, appreciating distinctionsof style.At this stage, you have the know-how <strong>to</strong> express yourmessage in a highly professional manner. You commanda wide range of language and maintain a high degreeof accuracy. Both your verbal and written communicationskills have become excellent.8

A centrally located universitybuildingOur offices and most of our classrooms are locatedat Dekenstraat 4, in the heart of Leuven, Belgium’smost prestigious university <strong>to</strong>wn. When lessons start,your teacher’s webpage and the notice board inthe main entrance hall will show you the way <strong>to</strong>your classroom.Language LabsCLT has 9 language labs. Their purpose is <strong>to</strong> offer youthe possibility of learning a language in a professionalenvironment that offers a window <strong>to</strong> the world.Our courses build extensively on authentic audio, videoand online material. Exercising in the lab, will help you<strong>to</strong> understand native speakers, <strong>to</strong> become familiar withthe typical expressions, structures and pronunciationof the target language and <strong>to</strong> gain fluency.Up-<strong>to</strong>-date IT facilities‘myCLT’ is your personal webspace and gives youaccess <strong>to</strong> your personal CLT his<strong>to</strong>ry and exam results.It allows you <strong>to</strong> update your student profile au<strong>to</strong>nomouslyand communicate with our administrative services.Most importantly it gives you access <strong>to</strong> our uniqueelectronic learning platform: ‘e-CLT’. At your convenienceand from your own computer, you can exercise andreview lessons through a wide range of stimulatingmultimedia exercises.15


Making your lifeeasierThose of you coming by car andtaking classes in the evening or onSaturday morning, can rent a parkingspace at Parkstraat 53, near ourfacilities. For approximately 30 Euroa term or 60 Euro a year (not includinga 10 Euro deposit) you will never have<strong>to</strong> worry w<strong>here</strong> <strong>to</strong> park your car duringyour class at CLT.Another advantage available <strong>to</strong> youincludes a CLT student card whichoffers the holder a discount for aKU Leuven sports centre fitnesscard, some musea, bookshopsand other activities.16

More than language learningAt CLT we are committed <strong>to</strong> providing you botha successful and enjoyable period of study.Through CLT cafe you can meet native speakers ofyour chosen language. An ideal and fun way <strong>to</strong> getyour language skills in<strong>to</strong> full action.We offer opportunities <strong>to</strong> experience the languageand culture both in- and outside the classroom.This way you can live the language and enrichyour language learning process.A wide range of activitiesThroughout the year we invite interesting native speakersfor you <strong>to</strong> interact with.Some class teams or individual trainers have organisedtrips w<strong>here</strong> they explored the language and culture atits origin: visits <strong>to</strong> Liège, Brussels, Barcelona, Firenze,Sint Petersburg..., wine-tasting in Tren<strong>to</strong> and walks inthe Lake District <strong>to</strong> name just a few.You can join us on cultural outings <strong>to</strong> the theatre,the opera or exhibtions. Sometimes we also stageconcerts ourselves or ‘CLT canta’, a gathering forsinging CLT talent.18

How <strong>to</strong> register for CLT courses• If you opt for a beginner’s course you can registerimmediately, without taking a placement test.• If you already hold a certificate of a certain level issuedby an officially recognised centre of adult education,you do not need <strong>to</strong> take a placement test but canregister directly for the next level at the CLT office.• If you have prior knowledge of the language but arenot in the possession of a certificate, you first have<strong>to</strong> take a placement test. The result indicates whichlevel is suitable for you.The number of students per group is limited. It is t<strong>here</strong>forerecommended that you register as early as possible.Placement testsTo access a placement test, you need <strong>to</strong> create an accountwith a unique username and password of your choice.Make sure you save this information because you willneed it later <strong>to</strong> register as a student.You can take the placement test only once.
