Speak on the Middle East
“Travels through the Land”
Will be presented at the
Stuart Community Church
Sunday, August 12, 7:00pm
Dr. Tim Schorn, Director of the International
Studies Program and Associate Professor
of Political Science at the University of
South Dakota, will be discussing his travels
in Israel and the Palestinian Territories over
the past fifteen years. He will talk about the
presence of the three monotheistic faiths, the
likelihood of peace or conflict, and his interactions
with the people of the region.
Since 1997, Dr. Schorn has made seven
trips to Israel and the Palestinian Territories,
visiting with Israeli and Palestinian government
officials, educators, legislators, activists,
students, and citizen on the street, as
well as UN workers and Middle East experts.
Sixteen USD students have accompanied
him over the last few year. Prof. Schorn has
traveled for the Gaza Strip to the Golan
Heights, seeing a great deal of Israel and the
West Bank in between.
Dr. Schorn is a graduate of Stuart High
school and the University of Notre Dame,
and the son of William and Elaine Schorn of
Stuart.

Holt County Economic Development Agency with the help of several
local employers and individuals will be sponsoring a career expo at this
year’s Holt County Fair on Thursday, August 9 th and Friday, August 10 th
from 4-7 PM.
Live demonstrations will be given by Niobrara Valley Electric REA
and Nebraska Public Power District; Jim Hubel with Hubel Welding &
Iron; Jenna Reiman, nurse at Avera St. Anthony’s; Maureen Metschke,
Jennifer Burtwistle, Lauren Hubel, educators.
Thursday will feature utility line and nursing careers. Friday will feature
welding and teaching careers. On both days fair attendees can stop
by Holt County Economic Development’s booth to visit about career
trends and projections and current career opportunities.
Holt County Economic Development was established in 2007
through an inter-local agreement with all the communities in Holt County
working together to enhance and promote economic vitality and a strong
sense of community for existing and future businesses in Holt County.

The residents of the Parkside Assisted Living in Stuart wish to
show their appreciation for all of the hard work the citizens of Stuart do
to keep Stuart a beautiful town. They are aware of all of the weeding,

families of Stuart, the assisted living residents have

Monday morning the men’s group
enjoyed coffee and rolls while engaging
in some interesting conversation
with Gayle. The men can always find
lots of topics to talk about and express
their opinion about. Everyone is concerned
about the terrible hot weather
and the need for rain. Later, a trivia
session was held and right before
lunch exercise was done. In the afternoon,
several chapters of the “Little
House” book were read. When we got
finished with social hour, the residents
wanted to watch the “Olympics” on TV.
This is so interesting for all to watch.
Tuesday morning, Nancy Krysl prayed
the Rosary with the residents. Bible
stories and a daily devotion were read
to the other folks. In the afternoon, we
were very happy to have the Girl Scout
Brownie troop and their leader, Rachel
Kaup, here to be our Bingo hosts. The
girls who were here to help were Abigail
Tubbs, Grace Alder, Emma Alder,
Lexi Schroder, Katilynn Kaup and
Ashlyn Kaup.
A group of folks met in the living
room to talk about and learn about
“Natural Wonders”. This was very interesting
and we found out lots of new
and fun things about tomatoes and
potatoes, among other things. Judy
was busy in the beauty shop today.
The two days when the hairdressers
are here are really looked forward to
by the residents. Everyone likes to get
spruced up a little bit. Amber and several
of the ladies played a few games
of 7-Up in the afternoon. Our folks
who like movies are always looking
forward to 4:00 on Wednesdays, which
is our regular movie time.
We were fortunate to receive a great
rain last evening. Everyone seemed to
be in a better mood, and lots of the

residents spent time outside Thursday
morning. Beings the temperature
is more favorable in the mornings,
we love to just sit around,
watch the traffic and visit out in the
front of the building. Later in the
morning, exercise was done to the
music tape. A wildlife video was
shown after lunch, and several short
stories from the “Guideposts” magazine
were read to the residents.
Thirsty Thursday was held in the
afternoon and we were happy to see
the friends and family who came to
share this fun activity with us. Today,
we served sweet and sour
meatballs and crackers along with all
our favorite beverages. It is such a
fun time for everyone who is involved.
Pastor Richard Kothe was here
Friday morning to lead the Protestant
church service. His wife, Arlene,
played the organ for the hymns
that were sung. Most of the ladies
had their nails freshly polished and
trimmed this morning. Several
games of Wii Bowling were played
after church. The grilled hamburgers
that we had for lunch were very tasty
today. It is always a treat to have
something cooked on the grill. Father
Luke Steffes was here to celebrate
Mass with the residents and
people from the community. We
really enjoyed root beer floats for
social time today. Frank Murphy
was here to provide musical entertainment
for the residents in the late
afternoon. We are always happy to
have Frank here with us.
Saturday morning, several folks
enjoyed the Hay Days parade in Atkinson.
Claudine Penry was here to
host social hour in the afternoon.
We enjoy her company so much.
There were lots of
visitors in the facility
during the
weekend, and several
also went out
with their families.
We were all happy
to have some
cooler days.

Northeast's paramedic program accredited
by the CAAHEP
NORFOLK, Neb. - Northeast Community College's
paramedic program has successfully completed a national
accreditation process to become one of only four accredited
programs in Nebraska.
Doug Dekker, director of Northeast's paramedic program,
recently received word of the accreditation by the
Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education
Programs (CAAHEP.) The two-year, associate of applied
science program was approved through the State of Nebraska
Department of Health and Human Services Regulations
and Licensure Department some time ago.
According to Dekker, the accreditation process was
rigorous, taking nearly two-and-a-half years to complete.
The process included a 22-page Initial-Accreditation
Self Study Report (ISSR) and a site visit by two staff members
from the Committee on Accreditation of Educational
Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professions
(CoAEMSP) last November.
Dekker said the site visitors looked at the physical
make-up of the instructional classrooms and equipment,
interviewed college administrators, and hospital employees
who supervise Northeast student/interns. The visitors also
spoke with the staff and administration of the Norfolk Fire
Division and other employers of Northeast paramedic
graduates, Northeast's paramedic advisory committee
members, and current and past students.
Dekker said the site visit was extremely successful,
with the visitors suggesting only procedural and paperwork
issues that Northeast had addressed earlier. "I was extremely
pleased with the outcome of the site visit," Dekker
said. "To essentially get a clean bill of health on our first
site visit was very gratifying after all our hard work."
The CoAEMSP Board of Directors recommended approval
of Northeast's paramedic program in May to the
CAAHEP Board of Directors. The accreditation is good
for five years.
With a long history as an emergency medical technician
(EMT)/paramedic, Dekker was employed by the Norfolk
Fire Division for many years. He joined Northeast
Community College in April of 2011 on a part-time basis

and became the full-time director of
the program last spring.
Students enrolled in Northeast's
paramedic program graduate as
field/clinical-ready paramedics with
the knowledge and skills to care for
injured or ill patients. Upon graduation,
they are eligible to take the
National Registry for Emergency
Medical Technicians' test. After
certification by the National Registry,
students can apply for a license
to practice as a paramedic in Nebraska.
"Northeast is very proud of our
most recent accredited program of
study," said John Blaylock, vice
president of educational services.
"As a community college, we
strive to serve our 20-county area
with training that helps sustain our
communities. The need for certified,
paid and volunteer paramedics
is critical for all our large and small
communities."

will allow individuals to attain
the necessary education for national
registry testing," Blaylock continued.
"Under the leadership of Doug
Dekker, Northeast will continue to
expand the EMT and paramedic
offerings to our constituents."

Francis “Fritz” Krieger
Francis "Fritz" Krieger passed away July 25, 2012 in
Atkinson, NE. Funeral services will be held Friday August
3, 2012 at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in
Atkinson. Visitation will be 3 to 8pm at Seger Funeral
Home Thursday August 2, 2012.
Fritz was born July 14, 1946 in Atkinson, NE to John
and Florence (Schneider) Krieger. On September 14,
1968 he married Joyce Walker. To this union two sons
were born, DeLoren and Clayton. Fritz served two years
in the US Army with one year of service in Vietnam. He
worked for Schmader Electric in Grand Island, NE for a few years until he returned
to ranching in the Atkinson area in the early 1980's. Fritz retired in
2008 and moved into Atkinson.
He is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, DeLoren (Renee)
Krieger, Clayton Krieger, a grandson, Jesse, and a great granddaughter,
Emma all of Pierre, SD. Four brothers, Johnny of Spencer, NE, LaVern (Anita)
of Bassett, NE, Don (Sandy) of Bassett, NE, Ron (Lorain) of Bassett, NE, two
sisters, Sharon (Dan) Atkinson of Bassett, NE, Irene and (Merlin) Hunt of
Grand Island, NE. Sister-in-law Maxine Krieger of Atkinson, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Harold Krieger
of Atkinson and one niece Gwenda Hunt.
Don Rzeszotarski
Don Rzeszotarski was born on February 2,
1931 in a farmhouse seven miles north and a quarter
mile west of Atkinson, NE to Gaines and Ethel
(Schrunk) Rzeszotarski. He attended school and
graduated high school.
Don loved the land he worked all his life, his
country and his God, who he served at the Atkinson
Presbyterian Church all his adult life. He also
turned the tragedy of his daughter, Roseanne’s
death into something positive when he founded the
local chapter of “Compassionate Friends.” Don
was active in the Farm Crisis Council of Interchurch
Ministries of Nebraska, the Holt County Historical Society, and Toastmasters.
While he never had the opportunity to attend college, he devoted a
great deal of time to the study of history which was a passion of his. Politics
were another favorite discussion topic of his which he was never afraid to
voice and, while he may not agree with an opposing opinion, was generally
willing to hear it out! He also loved Nebraska football and could be found most
game days in front of the TV. He was always ready to share a humorous story
from his military days, as well as many other topics ,and those stories will be
missed by the entire family. He was an extraordinary husband and father.
Don passed away August 1st, 2012.
Don is survived by his loving wife Eliza of Emmet, NE, daughters; Roxanne
Brotsky and husband Russ of Wichita, KS, Joan Farrier and husband
Mike of Lindsay, NE, Susanne Welshans of Haysville, KS, Joyce Cullen and
husband Gary of Madrid, NE; 17 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren;
and a sister Phyllis Bolduc of Rutland, Mass; multiple children he grew to love
and call his own.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaines and Ethel Rzeszotarski,
wife, Marcille, beloved daughter, Roseanne, and grandson, Logan.
On a lighter note, he always told us that the homestead he was born on no
longer exists; instead, as a tribute to him, they put up a monument in his honor
that went round and round in circles and spit out water!

The Good Samaritan Society Atkinson had a great week! The residents
have been enjoying the beautiful weather as well. The Protestant Church Services
and Catholic Communion were held Sunday morning. The Sundae Social
with ice cream and coffee is a good time for family and friends to visit.
Monday morning the residents went outside for Roll N Stroll. Jean was
present for Bible Study, she always has a big crowd gathered to listen in as
she speaks. The Balloons activity was held at 4:30 p.m., they have fun signing
songs and keeping the balloons up in the air.
Several residents came out for the Coed Exercises and Nuerobics that
were held Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for them to get out and get
some exercise. Bingo in the afternoon is a fun time and we are grateful for the
volunteers who come and help us out. We had Five O’Clock somewhere out
on the Patio, the residents took in the warm weather and were treated to refreshments.
In the evening they played a card game of UNO.
Pastor Peterson was here Wednesday morning to hold Church Services.
The activities had Reading, this is a time where the residents sit and enjoy listening
to a good book. Many residents went on a Bus Ride to Long Pine and
enjoyed ice cream while they stopped in Bassett.
Chair Dancing was held Thursday morning, many like coming out for the
music and exercise. We were happy to have Frank Murphy join us to offer
musical entertainment for the residents in the afternoon. We had many
women come out to get their nails done during Manicures. We are very thankful
for the volunteers who come to help out with this activity.
Friday morning Father Luke held Mass at 10:00 a.m. The Kitchen Crew
helped out the Dietary Staff by peeling potatoes. During Baking they made
Oatmeal Raisin cookies, which were enjoyed
by many staff and residents. Friday
Night at the Movies was held as the
residents watched “Joyful Noise” while
being treated to popcorn.
We had a great time during the Hay
Days weekend with the parade and the
“Dueling Pianos Show” as well. Thanks
to everyone who helped out we really
appreciate it! We hope to have another
great week here at the Good Samaritan
Society!

Helen Bilstein
Helen Bilstein, age 92, of Atkinson, NE passed away Thursday Aug. 2,
2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson. Visitation
with a prayer service was held Monday, August 6 at
the Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson, NE. Funeral Services
were held Tuesday, August 7 at 10 am at the Atkinson
United Methodist Church. Burial immediately followed
at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson. The Rev.
Terry Otto officiated and music was provided by Bonnie
Krysl and Deb Kaup. Pallbearers were Helen's greatgrandchildren
Kelsey Butterfield, Trevor Butterfield, Riley
Bilstein, Megan Bilstein, Shane Mlinar, Peyton Kerkman,
and Karter Kerkman. Honorary Pallbearers were Mary
Ellen Scholz and the staff and residents of Prairie Winds
Assisted Living. Seger Funeral home provided arrangements.
Helen was born February 6, 1920 to Elmer and Mabel (Gilman) Enbody in
Amelia, NE. She lived on the family ranch with her parents until moving to
Atkinson where she was employed at the Stockman Hotel. In order to finance
her lifelong dream of being a pilot she sold her horse to pay for flying
lessons. She completed her flight education at The Norfolk Flying School
under the tutelage of Andy Riser becoming Holt County's first licensed aviatrix.
On September 9, 1940 Helen married James Bilstein of Amelia in Chadron,
NE. They ranched in the Amelia area until purchasing a ranch 5 miles southeast
of Swan Lake. Later they moved to the Bilstein family ranch on Swan
Lake. They enjoyed working the ranch, hunting, fishing, and playing cards
with friends and neighbors. In 2001 with James in failing health they moved
to Prairie Winds Assisted Living in Atkinson. After James passed away in
2003 Helen enjoyed working in the kitchen, setting tables, and tending the
community garden. Helen continued her lifelong passion for playing cards
until failing eyesight stopped her. The Professional Bull Rider television
show was a particular favorite and she watched faithfully. She knew every
bull rider's name and his current standing. Helen was a faithful fan of Justin
McBride and closely followed his career. Helen passed away peacefully after
a short illness. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Bonnie, of Atkinson; grandchildren,
Rodney of Boston, MA, Randy and wife Lisa of Atkinson, Makala
and husband Daryl Butterfield of Stuart, and Terri and husband Kerry Kerkman
of Norfolk; great grandchildren Kelsey and Trevor Butterfield, Riley and
Megan Bilstein, Shane Mlinar, and Peyton and Karter Kerkman; sisters
Mabel Eggleston of Wheatland, Wyoming, Betty Winings of Atkinson, Francis
Ballagh of Missoula Montana, and Estella Blomgren of Winlock, Washington
and a sister-in-law Clara Enbody of Atkinson, NE.
She was preceded in death by her husband James, parents Elmer and
Mabel Enbody and 3 brothers Warren,
George and James Enbody.

I would like to thank the nurses and
the entire staff at West Holt Memorial
Hospital for the wonderful care I received
during my recent in-hospital
stay. They were all so attentive and
caring and had such upbeat attitudes.
They sure know how to cheer a
person up!
A special thanks to Dr. John and
PAs, Erica and Jeanni, and Christine,
the respiratory therapist, for their wonderful
treatment and care. It is really
great to know that we have such good
doctors and professionals in our area.
To all of our friends and relatives –
thank you for all your cards and
prayers. It means so much to know so
many people care.
And lastly, I want to thank my loving
family who remained by my side nearly
round the clock – Agnes, Jim and
Marilyn (who do so much every day),
and Charlie and Mary Ellen, who traveled
distances to be with me. Feeling
the love from my family was one of the
greatest sources of comfort anyone
could ask for during a time like this.

Jennifer Christine Thiele and Curtis Michael Krobot were united in marriage
by the Rev. Michael Gutgsell on June 23, 2012 at St. Cecilia Cathedral in
Omaha, NE. A reception was held at the Livestock Exchange Building.
The bride is the daughter of Dr. Geoffrey and Lorraine Thiele of Omaha,
NE. The groom is the son of James and Marilyn Krobot of Stuart, NE.
Grandparents of the bride are Margaret V Thiele and late Raymond G Lt.
Cll. (Ret.) Thiele, and Margaret H Soar and late Charles H Soar. Grandparents
of the groom are Albert F and Agnes A Krobot, and the late Orville M and
Louella P Seger.
The Maid of Honor was friend of the bride Molly Belling. Also attending
the bride was Donna Ertz, Hope Meier, Sara Prince, Stephanie Shepard, and
Erica Tubbs. Flower girls were nieces of the groom Abigail Tubbs, Chiana
Tubbs, Kyra Tubbs, Sophia Krobot and Megan Krobot.
The best man was friend of the groom Jim Deietering. Groomsmen were
Jeff Krobot, Scott Krobot, Andrew Langan, TJ Davey, and Geoffrey Thiele.
Ring bearers were nephews of the groom Hunter Tubbs, Samuel Krobot, and
Carson Krobot.
The bride and groom both graduated from University of Nebraska Medical
Center. Jennifer is a Pharmacist at CVS/Pharmacy. Curtis is a Physical
Therapist at Premier Therapy.
The couple traveled to Riviera Maya, Mexico for their honeymoon. They
are making their home in Omaha, NE.
