1st Annual Family Fun Night-2011
Question: What do you get when you mix one AWESOME idea, a whole bunch of FANTASTIC donors, a handful of
TERRIFIC volunteers, and one GREAT location? Answer: The first ever Family Fun Night!!!
July 3rd marked the 1st Annual Family Fun Night in Stuart. It was held the same evening as the Firemen’s BBQ and
the annual Cruise Night from 5-8pm. The evening of fun for the entire family as held between St. Boniface School and
the Legion Club on the basketball court.
It was estimated that 350+ people came through the gates and enjoyed the carnival games, pony rides, and inflatable
jumping games. Games included basketball shoot, Frisbee throw, ring toss, fish pond, face painting, and others.
The inflatable bungee run was a hit (not to mention quite a workout!) and so was the pony rides. Prizes given out at each
game were all FREE and included popcorn, pop, cotton candy, basketballs, tattoos, and the very popular snow cones.
All prizes were purchased with money form the many donors that made the whole event possible.
If you’d like to see this event included in the 4th of July festivities we’d appreciate hearing from you. Donations for
next year will be accepted anytime, to (make check payable to the Knights of Columbus.) We also welcome any
comments or suggestions relating to the possible 2nd Annual Family Fun Night. Please contact Jeff Wallinger, Ivan
Campbell, or Jan Kunz.

Happy 4 th of July to everyone,
the residents enjoyed being out on
the sidewalk to watch the ―Grand
Parade‖. Everyone agreed it was a
really fun time. In the afternoon, a
movie and popcorn was shown. We
also had a lot of visitors in and out of
the facility and were very happy to
have them. Several of the residents
were out with their families for the
festivities.
Louise Babl prayed the Rosary
with the residents Tuesday morning.
The residents enjoyed listening to
―Chicken Soup‖ being read later in
the morning. These were all stories
about the 9-11 tragedy. Exercise
was done to the music tape. Bingo
was held in the afternoon with
Brooke Jarman, Janice Lockman
and Amber Neibauer helping. The
prizes that were won were used for
social hour. Later, a Lawrence Welk
video was shown.
The ―Guideposts‖ magazine was
read Wednesday morning. A hand
clapping exercise was held later.
Judy was busy in the beauty shop
most of the day. Several residents
the favorite beverages. The residents
STUART AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
July 7, 2011
The July meeting of the Stuart
American Legion Auxiliary was
called to order by President Tammera
Kunz with thirteen members in
attendance. Minutes of the June
meeting were read and approved.
Lavonne Boes reported that she has
received the 2012 membership notices.
Fern Seger reported having sent
get-well cards to Alice Fahrenholz
and Kay Hamik and a sympathy
card to Kay Kohle.
Mabel Newman gave the news
report. She told the group that the
Flag Amendment has passed the
House of Representatives and now
needed to go to the Senate.
Tammera Kunz gave the
Lounge Report. The committee has
written a set of rules to be followed
by those renting the lounge.
President Kunz thanked all who
helped decorate the bell for the parade.
Also a special thanks to
Denny Weber for pulling the bell.
Thank you also was extended to the
Auxiliary Color Guard for marching.
Mary Krysl reported that the
June Bloodmobile netted 82 units of
blood. She also told the group that
after having co-chaired the bloodmobiles
for thirty-two years she is
resigning and that Abby Wonder-
check has agreed to take her place.
Donna Malone will continue to work
with Abby.
The group voted to make several
community donations. These included
the Stuart Athletic Club for the girl's
softball program, The girl's softball
team going to state and the Stuart
Wrangler.
A discussion regarding our being
apart of the Atkinson Hay Day's Parade
was held. All agreed that we
should participate since they are so
good about coming to our 4th of July
celebration. It was decided that rather
than the color guard marching, we
should have members ride in a decorated
pick-up or trailer. President
Kunz will take care of the arrangements.
The charter had been
draped in remembrance
of Loretta Hoffman and
before closing the meeting
a prayer service was
held. Loretta had been a
continuous member of
the Stuart American Legion
Auxiliary for 63 yrs.
With no further business
the meeting was closed in
regular form.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary C. Krysl, Secretary
A Note From Parkside Administrator
As the new Parkside Manor administrator, I would like to
introduce myself as the newest member to the Parkside Manor
team. My name is Stephanie Hahn; I took over as the new administrator
May 16th. My husband Kam works at West Holt
hospital. We have one daughter, Autumn who is a year and a
half, and are expecting another child the end of October.
I grew up on a farm and ranch in Rushville Nebraska, just
west of here on highway 20. My family and I moved here from
Wilber just southwest of Lincoln. I have been around nursing
homes since I was born as my mother, has been a nursing
home administrator my whole life. My sister is finishing up her
training to be a nursing home administrator also.
I started college to become a physical therapist in 2005 but
found out that long term care administration was more of a calling
for me. I graduated from Bellevue University with a bachelor’s
degree in long term care administration. Before starting as
an administrator I worked as a nurse aide and a med aide for 7
years.
In my free time during the warm months I love to be at the
lake fishing, camping, and jet skiing. During the snowy months
The Wrangler
Harold George Goldfuss
was born on October
21, 1926 to George and
Josephine (Dobias) Goldfuss
at the family farm
north of Atkinson. He was
the 4th of six children born
to George and Josie
(Dobias) Goldfuss. His older
siblings were Elmer, Evelyn,
and Charles. Edith & Leonard
were the youngest of
the family. In the spring of
1929 the family moved to Oregon, but
decided the west coast was not for
them and returned to Nebraska in the
fall, right about the time of Harold's 3 rd
birthday. His father bought their
homestead in 1939. Harold has lived
there ever since.
Harold attended country school
about 1and 1/2 miles southwest of
the home place. He attended
through the 9th grade and then
stayed home to help with the farm.
When Harold was 16, he was involved
in a car accident which resulted in a
severe eye injury.
Harold lived all but about 5 years
of his life on the family farm. His
grandfather built the original big 10
room house. When his parents moved
to town in 1945 Harold stayed on at
the farm. His sister Evelyn and husband
Harold Risor lived with him in the
big house for about a year after the
war.
Harold decided the house was too
big for a bachelor, and reduced the
size of it. Part of the upstairs that was
removed is still being used today for
the chicken coop!
Harold was pals with Joe and
Ray Walnofer. They went to Scotts-
JM Collision Center
They worked nights in the
potato fields and then in
the sugar factory to try and
make extra money, returning
home to Atkinson after
a month.
On September 28,
1953, Harold married Bethene
(Anderson) at Sioux
Falls, South Dakota. Harold
took his bride to his bachelor
home, and on Aug 25,
1959, their daughter Beth Ann was
born. His bachelor pad had become a
family farm again. In 1962, Harold and
Betty purchased the farm.
Harold and Betty liked to travel
when they could and went into Canada
and got as far south as Juarez, Mexico.
In the 70's they would go dancing
in South Dakota and had a lot of fun.
But he always preferred home and
didn't venture far for very long.
He loved all of his dogs but
"Bandit" was very special to him. Harold
was a good neighbor and enjoyed
shelling corn and helping out everyone
when he could. He also liked going to
the stock car races with his daughter.
Harold was a kind and gentle man with
a good sense of humor. He never met
a stranger and could strike up a conversation
with anyone.
He is survived by his wife Betty
Goldfuss of Atkinson, NE; daughter
Beth Griess of Powell, WY; sister Edith
Murphy and husband Frank of Stuart,
NE; brother Leonard Goldfuss and wife
Mavis of O’Neill, NE; and many nieces,
nephews, and brothers and sisters-inlaw.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, two brothers, and one sister.
Crowd Attends
Prescribed Fire And
Wildlife Workshop
LYNCH – Fifty landowners
and others interested in prescribed
fire turned out for a workshop
and tour here last Thursday.
Prescribed Fire and Managing
for Wildlife on Private Lands
in the Niobrara Valley was the
topic of the event, co-sponsored
by the Niobrara Valley Prescribed
Fire Association, the
Northern Prairies Land Trust, the
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission,
Pheasants Forever, and
the North Central Nebraska
RC&D, with support from the Nebraska
Environmental Trust.
Carl Simmons of Cherry
County, president of the NVPFA,
welcomed the participants and
provided an update on the association,
now in its third year. The
association provides prescribed
fire information and training to its
members, facilitates communication
between members to form
neighborhood prescribed fire
teams, and it administers two
mobile fire caches, each containing
enough equipment to outfit a
ten-person burn crew.
During the morning presentations,
speakers discussed fire
ecology, burning in deciduous
woodlands and the effects of fire
and grazing on grassland birds.
Several landowners and
natural resource agency employees
from South Dakota were in
attendance, and they commented
on the knowledge and
enthusiasm for prescribed fire
displayed by the Nebraska landowners.
The afternoon tour featured
four areas near Lynch that were
burned this past spring to reduce
cedar encroachment. The pastures
were brilliantly green with
healthy new grasses and forbs,
and dotted with dead cedar
July 14, 2011
Niobrara Valley Prescribed Fire Association board member Perry Dekay of
Lynch took participants to several sites his group burned this spring. He explained
their burn plan and methods, and showed the vigorous new forage
growth beneath the fire-killed cedars
Niobrara
Valley
Prescribed Fire
Association
president Carl
Simmons, of
Cherry County
(left) listens as
botanist Gerry
Steinauer of
the Nebraska
Game and
Parks Commission
explains
how to identify
different types
of sedges.
trees. Gerry Steinauer, a botanist with the Nebraska Game and Parks
Commission, held an impromptu plant identification session as the group
toured the burn sites.
NVPFA board members Perry DeKay and Rick Pritchett described
how each unit had been burned, including weather conditions, crew numbers,
the equipment they used, and challenges they faced. One of the
units had been burned later than the others, after green-up was well underway,
and after the burn was completed, nobody was quite sure if it
had done the job or not.
―By the next day we could see that we had killed a lot of cedar after
all,‖ said DeKay, ―and the landowner was really satisfied.‖ Pritchett added
that often it takes some time before the effectiveness of a burn can be
seen.
Simmons was pleased with the large turnout. ―I think this was one of
the best workshops we’ve had yet,‖ he said.
the people behind the scenes making calls, organizing,
and pulling all the pieces together—Thank you! And
lastly, thanks to all of the people for coming and supporting
this fun evening-it was well worth all of the time to
see so many happy people celebrating with their families
at such a fun time of year!
Kids Bible Power Hour
A High-Seas Voyage though the Bible
―Ahoy, Captain!‖ Was how each
Kids Bible Power Hour started on the
Wednesdays of June. 25-35 kids
came and enjoyed songs, plays,
crafts, snacks, and stories about our
faith. The adventure started out with
our theme song: ―The Vast Voyage‖
and then led into the stories. Each
story thane had a crafts that associated
with it. More songs followed with
discussion and sometimes plays were
put on to help understand the story a
little better. Other songs learned during
the month were: ―Ha-la-lala‖
(crowd favorite,) ―Today is the
Day‖, and ―Your Life Will Change.‖
The following stories were read
throughout the month: The Story of
Creation, Noah’s Ark, Jonah and the
Whale, Moses in a Basket, Moses
Leads the Israelites, Jesus Call His
Apostles, and Jesus Walks on the
Water. The crafts made were a creation
banner, a footprint, a handprint,
sun-catcher wind chimes, and a boat.
All of the morning concluded with
snacks. The meeting included a fun
game call land and sea. Thanks to all
the people who helped in any way
from being readers to providing
snacks. It was greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Thanks to all of the kids who helped with the Bible Power Hour—especially
the confirmation students: Brittany Hanzlik, Makala Fahrenholz, Franklin
Fessler, Bethany Alder, and Rachel Kaup. Kudos to our snack providers: Helen
Kunz, Amber Jarecke, Marilyn Hytrek, and Emily Wallinger. And lastly, thanks to
the kids who came and participated. It was lot of fun!
