Card of Thanks
Thank you! With our most sincere appreciation, we would like to thank all
those that helped make our June 20 th bloodmobile a success! With the help of
volunteers and donors, we were able to collect 75 units of blood, a bit short of
the goal of 82 but we potentially helped 225 patients!! The blood supply is extremely
low right now so 75 units will be extremely beneficial to the shelves.
A BIG thank you goes out to everyone in the surrounding area that took
time out of their busy schedules to attend and give blood at the drive. You are
the people making the difference! Thanks again!
Our thanks also to the volunteers who gave their time helping schedule
donors prior to the drive. Betty Barritt, Helen Kunz, Theo Kohle and Twila
Wherley--your telephone recruiting is the best! We know it takes several hours
to contact donors, your time and talent does not go unnoticed.
Thank to you to those who donated cookies and bars—Sharon Paxton,
Phyllis Scholz, Beth Vogel, Judy Wallinger, Lorraine Wallinger, Becky Estill,
Linda Kohle, and Donna Malone. Also a big thank you to Southside for their
donation of ice.
Volunteering the day of the drive were Edith Tielke, Millie Weber, Joan
Murphy, and Snooks Meusch. Thank you ladies for spending the day with us
and helping make sure the donors had everything they needed!
Lastly, we’d like to thank the Village of Stuart for the use of the Auditorium
and the village crew of Rick Shearer and Don Shearer for helping set up the
room and unloading the equipment.
Without the help and support of all the volunteers and donors, the blood
drive would not be possible. Thank you for sharing your time and talents for
such a worthy cause!
The Wrangler
Monday morning was
such a beautiful morning that
we went outside right away.
There we had a group l:l
visit. One of the main topics
was putting up hay with a
team of horses. Everyone
had a few comments to
make about this subject.
“Shake it Off” was done for
exercise this morning. Ice
cream bars sure did taste
good for social hour on such
a hot day. In the evening,
we held the annual Fathers
Day BBQ supper. We are
so grateful for all those who came to
share the evening with the men.
Agnes Krobot led the residents in
praying the Rosary Tuesday morning.
Exercise was done to the music tape.
Judy was busy in the beauty shop most
of the day. The Stuart American Legion
Auxiliary hosted Bingo today. The
ladies who were here to help were
Marilyn Wallinger, Judy Schmitz, and
Fern Seger. Bingo continues to be one
of the very favorite activities, and we
are so fortunate to have the volunteers
to help us with it every week. Afterwards,
the reading group met and read
some short stories from the book,
“Wisdom of Our Fathers.” These stories
were all about fathers.
A magazine scavenger hunt was
held Wednesday morning. It is always
fun to see what our posters look like
when we get done. A puzzle was put
together this A.M. also. The carpet in
the living room was getting shampooed
this morning, so we had to find other
places to do our activities. This afternoon,
a couple of games of cards were
played before social hour. The movie
for today was “Girl of Limberlost.” This
was another really good family movie
and enjoyed by everyone who watched
it.
Amber met with a few of the ladies
who like to do crafts Thursday morning.
They made centerpieces using jars and
cupcake papers. They are so neat and
it was a fun project. Exercise was
done right before lunch. We decided to
have an outdoor picnic for lunch, even
though it was a little windy, several
folks were happy to go out to eat. Oth-
June 28, 2012
Francis Duffy and his family spend time together
after the Father's Day Supper.
ers preferred to stay inside. Diana
was doing hairstyles today. In the
afternoon, a group of ladies ventured
to the Assisted Living for the June
Red Hat meeting with Helen Kunz
and Buttons Davis. Thirsty Thursday
was held at 3 P.M. with a nice crowd
in attendance. A meat and cheese
tray with crackers was served today,
along with all the favorite beverages.
We watched a “Big Joe Polka” video
afterwards in the living room.
Pastor Randy Goeke was here to
lead the Protestant church service
Friday morning. Most of the ladies
had their nails polished today. Several
games of Wii bowling were
played with staff and residents later
in the morning. The ones who play
really enjoy the Wii. Father Luke
Steffes was here to celebrate Mass
with the residents and people from
the community in the afternoon.
Nancy and Amber served banana
splits for social hour. The living room
was full when Frank Murphy came to
entertain at 4 P.M. The residents
always look forward to the time he
spends with us.
Saturday afternoon, Amber took
folks outside and also read the local
papers to them while they were out
there. They later all enjoyed social
hour together. A Catholic Communion
service was held in the chapel
Sunday morning. A movie was
shown and popcorn was served in
the afternoon. We are always happy
to see the many visitors that come
during the weekend.
Got Glow?
June 28, 2012
ATKINSON — A Glow Ball Tournament on
July 14, hosted by the Atkinson Community
Foundation Fund, will redefine the way you think
of a golf tournament! This 9 hole, glow ball tournament
creates a relaxed and fun environment in
which everyone can enjoy a night of noncompetitive
golf while following around a glowing
golf ball at the Atkinson-Stuart Country Club. A
pre-party will kick off the night at 7pm with a
prime rib dinner and play begins at dusk. Along with your golf clubs, you are
encouraged to bring a flash light and your walking shoes.
The Atkinson Community Foundation Fund has chosen to support a new
BackPack Program provided by the Food Bank of the Heartland right here in
Atkinson. One in five kids in Nebraska under the age of 18 is at-risk for hunger.
The BackPack Program is designed to provide food for children at times when
other resources are not available, such as during weekends and school vacations.
Staff members at elementary schools identify students in need and then
the Food Bank for the Heartland
supplies bags filled with
child-friendly, nonperishable
food for those children to take
home on Friday afternoons.
Each bag provides two
breakfast meals and two
lunch or dinner meals. Since
2006, the backpacks have
been delivered to participating
schools by dedicated
Food Bank for the Heartland
volunteers and staff members.
Currently, nearly 3,900
backpacks are delivered
each week at 90 schools in
Nebraska and western Iowa.
Net proceeds from the
event will benefit the new
BackPack Program at West
Holt Elementary School. The
registration deadline for the tournament and pre-party is July 6.
The Atkinson Community Foundation is dedicated to the improvement
and long-term viability of the Atkinson community. A
permanent endowment fund has been established, through which
only the annual earnings are used for projects. As the endowment
grows, so will our quality of life for families today and future generations.
A volunteer Fund Advisory Committee works actively to
increase charitable giving and award grants to worthwhile organizations
Stuart Bloodmobile
The Red Cross Bloodmobile was held Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Stuart
Auditorium with 75 units of blood collected, a bit short of the goal of 82 but the
donors potentially helped 225 patients!! The blood supply is extremely low right
now so 75 units will be extremely beneficial to the shelves.
The Bloodmobile was sponsored by the Stuart American Legion Auxiliary.
Northeast Cultural Exchanges Lead To
Travel For Students, Visitors
NORFOLK, Neb. - As two Chinese
visitors were unpacking in
Burkhardt Hall at Northeast Community
College recently, 12 Northeast
students and three staff were packing
for overseas travel.
International exchange programs
are part of Northeast's Strategic
Plan. Northeast President Michael
R. Chipps, Ph.D., recently included
global educational opportunities as
one of Northeast's top eight priorities.
The two Chinese visitors from
the Beijing Vocational College of Agriculture
(BVCA) studied Nebraska
water issues and the Northeast students
visited London and Paris as an
international study trip.
Faculty members Yang Shengmin
and Su Chunhong, Ph.D., joined
a Northeast Crops and Irrigation
class taught by Michael
Lechner. They spent nearly three
weeks in Nebraska.
Lechner said Northeast's relationship
with the Beijing Vocational
College of Agriculture is important as
China is a large consumer of agricultural
goods produced in America. He
said 25 percent of all soybeans produced
in the country are bought by
the Chinese.
Through an interpreter, Shengmin
and Dr. Chunhong taught four
lessons in Lechner's class on Chinese
water quality and issues. They
told the students that China does not
have abundant water resources.
Lindsay Manufacturing, Lindsay;
Tyson Foods, Madison; Central Valley
Ag, Monroe; Producers Hybrids,
Battle Creek; Laredo Ridge Wind
Farm, Petersburg, Maricle Farms,
Albion, and Roth Farms, Wisner,
were among the places they visited.
They also visited the Norfolk
Waste Water Treatment facility because
waste water treatment in
China is challenging due to its large
population.
Shengmin and Dr. Chunhong
also attended a Norfolk church service
and were dinner guests at the
home of several present and past
Northeast staff members. "They
were fascinated with our American
grills," Lechner said, "and really liked
the food cooked on grill."
In a farewell letter to Dr. Chipps,
Shengmin noted that in their visit of
over 20 factories and farms, "they
learned a lot, that the teaching process
was rigorous, and teaching content
very rich." She also noted, "the air
here is fresh and people warm and
hospitable."
As part of a reciprocal agreement
with BVCA, Lechner and Northeast
Biology Instructor Jim Gross will spend
about 20 days in Beijing in September
to study Chinese water issues.
The Northeast students who visited
London and Paris were required to
take Instructor Adam Peterson's threecredit-hour
class, Intercultural
Communications, before the trip. Students
who traveled were Karina Gonzalez
and Mayra Velazquez, both of
South Sioux City; Katie Becker and
Samantha Schulte, both of Norfolk;
Kelsey Konken, Hartington;
Kyle Pospisil,
Creighton; Brittany
Gaudreault, Madison;
Ashley Trujillo, Stuart;
Hannah Williams, Elgin;
Ethan Koopman, Battle
Creek; Erika Spahr,
Laurel, and Derrick Nelsen,
West Point.
Northeast staff members
Pam Saalfeld, Peterson,
and Hillary Saalfeld
accompanied the students,
who paid their own expenses
and earned one
college credit for the trip.
Peterson asked the
students to journal daily and
interview a Londoner and
Parisian to ask them what it
meant to be English or
French. He also asked the
students to write an end-oftrip
report. Pospisil, Trujillo,
and Koopman also spoke at
the June Board of Governors
meeting.
Several students wrote
that tradition and history are
highly valued in Lon-
don. "The British treasure their centuries-old
buildings and work to keep
them in good condition," one
wrote. "Unlike Americans, who tear
down old buildings to build skyscrapers
or parking lots."
Another student noted that London
has a large, blended community
of different races, microcultures, and
subcultures. "On Camden High
Street, I saw a Chinese restaurant on
the same block as a French restaurant.
I saw an Arab man pushing a
cart of Hala chicken. I saw all sorts
of traditional clothing, from turbans to
burkas. It was impossible to tell who
was in the minority and who was in
the majority in London," another
wrote.
Some students wrote that communication
in Paris was difficult because
they did not speak
French. Some found the French unfriendly
because of the language
barrier, while the English were considered
friendly because there was
no language barrier.
"I used to think that everyone in
America should speak English or get
out," more than one student wrote. "I
now know how hard that is and how
scary it would be to wake up every
morning knowing I couldn't communicate
with anyone today because I
couldn't speak the language," one
said.
Hello from The Good Samaritan Society! The Catholic
Communion was offered in room. Pastor Ila and Ann held the
Protestant Church Service. The residents enjoy the Ice Cream
Social and coffee at 2:30 p.m., this is a great chance for family
and friends to visit.
Monday started off with Coed Exercises and Map Qwest.
Several residents came out to listen to Jean do Bible Study, we
are very grateful to have her come and offer her time. The
Presbyterian Ladies were present to entertain during Happy
Hour. The residents always have a great time listening to the
music while enjoying refreshments. The Men had a Father’s
Day Dinner Monday evening. They were treated to Filet Mignon,
Baked Potato, and cheesecake.
The Resident Council meeting was held Tuesday at 10:00
a.m. This is great opportunity for the residents to voice any
‘stranger in a strange land’ and the
necessity of adaptation. "When we
arrived in London and later in Paris,
they were overwhelmed by the
speed and size of a huge city and
the multitudes of people from all
walks of life," she said.
"In Paris, there was the potential
of a language barrier for simple
things like buying water or asking
directions. They had to read maps,
study signage, and navigate public
transportation," she continued.
"However, I think they surprised
themselves with how quickly
they adapted. They became experts
at the London Tube and the Paris
Metro, even venturing out on their
own without the group leaders."
Next summer, Northeast Spanish
Instructor Wendy Swenson will
lead a study trip to Spain after students
have taken her class, "Spain's
Basic Bookkeeping For Business Is Topic
For This Month’s Entrepreneurship Series
Holt County Economic Development’s monthly Entrepreneurship
Series workshop will be held Friday, June 29th at the Murphy
Theater and Media Center in Stuart. The program will run from 12
– 1PM.
These workshops are designed for new business owners, including
those in the startup/pre-launch phase; for existing business
owners, for entrepreneurship educators, and/or for organizations
and individuals involved with economic and community development.
June 29th’s session will focus on Basic Bookkeeping for small
businesses. To succeed in business, one of your most important
tools is financial analysis, based on your business records. Accurate
financial records will help you answer some very
important questions. Are you making money, or losing
it? How much? Is your business on sound financial
ground, or are troubles lurking ahead? A sound bookkeeping
system is the foundation on which all of this
valuable financial information can be built.
No pre-registration is necessary to attend and there
isno cost to attend. For questions, please contact the
Holt County Economic Development Office at (402) 336
Letter To Editor
"If it looks like a duck, quacks
like a duck, and waddles like a duck,
chances are it is a duck."
I have adhered to this simple
and humorous philosophy for nearly
sixty years. It merely refers to the
use of "common sense" when dealing
with life's ever-changing dynamics.
In November 2011 when the
TransCanada Corporation stood before
our state senators and stated
that they would be re-routing the
Keystone XL pipeline in order to
avoid the Sandhills, a collective
cheer resounded across the rolling
hills of Keya Paha, Rock, and Holt
counties. On our own ranch we were
convinced that we had been saved
from six miles of certain destruction
and we were equally certain that this
entire region of the state had been
given a reprieve. In order to "avoid
the Sandhills" we were certain it
meant that this area, that has garnered
the Sandhills name for centuries,
would remain unscathed by a
thirty-six inch tar-sands pipeline buried
in its sandy soil and lying within
the life-sustaining Ogallala Aquifer.
WE WERE SO WRONG!
Now as the Nebraska Department
of Environmental Quality review
the alternative route supplied to
them by TransCanada, based on one
map, we are once again facing the
construction of the KXL pipeline
through the Sandhills. Yes, the alternative
route crosses miles and miles
of Sandhills ground.
Govenor Heineman, Nebraska
DEQ, state senators, and Transcanada,
as you are trying to convince
the country that you have done
a great service to our state, you will
not be convincing those of us (whom
with the help of common sense)
have made our living here. We will
always call it the Sandhills. You can
try to take away our land but you can
never remove our roots. Our feet are
embedded too deeply in this sandy
soil to allow that. We have "common
sense" not a map chosen for the sole
purpose of destroying miles of land
and threatening our life blood (the
Ogallala Aquifer) for the ultimate gain
Edward Carl Brandt
Edward Carl Brandt was born in Waterloo,
Iowa on February 10, 1945 to Vernal and Iona
also loved woodworking and made such items
it.
Yesterday I sat with my grandson
atop a typical sandhill dune on
our Keya Paha County ranch. Miles
of rolling hills lay before us. Below
us, nestled among the hills, a pool of
water( the result of the aquifer seeping
through the porous hills) gave a
flock of waterfowl a place to swim,
completely oblivious to our presence.
As the flock began to take
flight, I braced myself for the question
I knew was imminent from my
19
grandson. "Grammy, what's that?"
With a lump in my throat and a twoyear
olds hand clutched in mine, I
answered the only truthful way I
could.
"We used to call them ducks, but
that was before common sense was
outlawed."
