Pipe Dreams to be
Shown in O’Neill
Everyone is welcome to a public
screening of the movie Pipe Dreams
at 7PM at the new O'Neill Community
Center on December 11, 2011. There
will be a viewing in Stuart coming
soon. Time and date will be announced
soon. Pipe Dreams was produced
by Jane Kelly Kosek and Leslie
Iwerks.
This is a film about the ongoing
debate of the Keystone XL Pipeline, -
a 40-minute documentary that explores
the social, political and environmental
impacts of the $7 billion construction
of the proposed Keystone XL
Pipeline. This movie is directed by
Academy Award nominated filmmaker
Leslie Iwerks and narrated by Daryl
Hannah (who was also arrested in
Washington D.C. August 30th for protesting
the pipeline), this film marks
the third outing on the subject by
Iwerks, with the most imminent potential
to influence a national decision.
This film uncovers the realities
behind building this 1,980-mile pipeline
through the heartland of America.
Through interviews with landowners,
politicians, scientists, engineers, environmental
groups, activists and more,
it discusses the increasing ramifications
of America’s reliance on Canada’s
tar sands, as well as the sacrifices
on people, wildlife and the environment
in the long term. On the opposite
side, it will examine Keystone’s
proposed job creations, the land reclamation,
projected revenue for landowners
and taxpayers, reliance on
foreign oil, and pipeline safety history
in America. In addition, the film will
take a look at the existing Keystone I
Pipeline, its ongoing leaks, and the
personal stories of landowners whose
land it has affected.
Parkside Manor News
November 28-December 3, 2011
Greetings from Parkside Manor!!
Monday morning was the beginning of
all the holiday decorating for us. The
FFA members from the Stuart Public
School came to help us get in the holiday
spirit by putting up the four big
trees that we have. We really do appreciate
these kids and their teachers
doing this. The residents sat in the living
room and watched the festivities
going on. Each tree is different and
each one is very beautiful. Judy was
busy in the beauty shop today. Exercise
was done right before lunch. More
decorating was done after lunch and
the residents helped with this. Everyone
enjoyed social hour and later
watched a music video.
Tuesday morning Agnes Krobot
prayed the Rosary with the residents.
Bible stories were read to the other
residents. A couple games of Wii were
also played this morning. In the afternoon,
the Knights of Columbus were
here to host the weekly Bingo. The
folks who were here to help were K.
and Betty Barritt, Jim and Kathy
Chvala, Gerald Fahrenholz, and Bob
Tielke. The helpers enjoyed
some refreshments with the
residents for social hour. We
were all happy to have Sandy
bring in her baby to visit everyone.
We all like little children.
Wednesday morning the
crafters met in the activity room
and cut out lots of socks, mittens
and trees to place on the
tree. Many Christmas traditions
were read about and discussed.
It was really interesting
to see how the traditions that we
are all used to got started. In the
afternoon, peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches were made by the cooking
group. These were served for
social hour. Later, we watched the
first Christmas movie of the year.
Judy was again working in the
beauty shop today.
Thursday morning was spent on
a coloring project. We colored some
beautiful Christmas scenes. Exercise
was done to the music tape.
Diana was doing hairstyles today.
There was more decorating going on
in the afternoon before Thirsty
Thursday. There was a large crowd
on hand for this favorite activity
again today. Today, we served
meatballs and onion rings along with
all the favorite beverages.
Pastor John Ryding from Christ
Lutheran Church was here to
lead the Protestant church service
Friday morning. Elaine
Schorn played the organ for the
hymns that were sung. Most of
the ladies had their nails freshly
polished today. Father Luke
Steffes was here to celebrate
Mass with the residents and
people from the community in
the afternoon. Ice cream was
served for social hour, and later,
we enjoyed some special music.
Claudine was here to host the
Saturday social hour. We appreciate
her many years of volunteering
to be with the residents
on these Saturdays. There
were many visitors in the facility
during the weekend and we are
always so grateful for each and
everyone. Please feel free to
come visit when you have time.
2011 North Central Nebraska Public Health Banquet
O’Neill – ―Pure Performance‖ was the topic presented by John Underwood,
featured speaker of the North Central Nebraska Public Health Banquet on Friday,
November 4 th . Over 135 people gathered from across the far reaches of
Antelope, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, Knox, Pierce and Rock
Counties to listen to Mr. Underwood convey his research and experiences
about the field of athletics and social drug use.
John Underwood, President
and Founder of the
American Athletic Institute, is a
former NCAA All-American,
International-level distance
runner and World Masters
Champion and has coached or
advised more than two dozen
Olympians including World and
Olympic Champions. He holds
three International Olympic
Solidarity diplomas for coaching
and has been a crusader
for drug-free sport at all levels.
He has conducted the only
physiological case study, of the residual effect of alcohol on elite athletic performance.
The American Athletic Institute has forged a reputation as the experts
in the field of athletics and social drug use.
John talked about how the American Athletic Institute’s Community Programs
teach individuals strategies and techniques to constantly address the
ever changing and growing influences that increase risk for our youth. These
programs are designed to take lessons learned in sport: teamwork, collective
responsibility, discipline, loyalty, family, trust and bring these values into the
community.
He explained that alcohol use among adolescent athletes is fairly high, but
the problem is complex. Young athletes may be more likely to abuse alcohol
than their non-athlete peers and more likely to suffer behavioral and psychosocial
consequences as a result of drinking. They are also more prone to binge
drinking. John believes that education and prevention strategies should focus
on physiological, behavioral and psychosocial consequences. At this juncture,
these problems must be confronted in an immediate fashion. They must in all
instances be well documented, including first time episodes.
More than any other group of adolescents, we have a compelling reason for
athletes not to drink, health and performance. Alcohol, a metabolic poison has
only negative effects on all physiological parameters. This can be our initial
rationale for non-use.
The following are some of the additional benefits for student-athletes who
choose not to drink alcohol:
Academic or athletic performance will not be hampered;
The risk of breaking school rules or the law is greatly reduced;
Serious and life threatening problems related to being alcohol impaired
such as drunk driving and sexual decision- making, injury, arrest,
death are eliminated or reduced;
There is no risk of becoming addicted to alcohol; and,
The ability to develop appropriate life skills such as stress management,
problem solving, conflict resolution, interacting with others, and goal setting
is enhanced.
Most young people would only be influenced by the first two benefits, as
they are more tangible and more immediate. The latter three fall into the category
of ―not me.‖
(Continued from page 7)
John concluded with the thought that high school sports do matter! High
school athletics are an integral part of many communities throughout the
United States. The local sports teams are the focal point of community life: it’s
a source of pride, a spot for social gathering, and where initial perception of a
community begins; because of this performance matters; the performance of
the athletes as well as their behavior. The choice by student-athletes to use
drugs greatly affects both of these domains. The athletes are usually the leaders
in the school and the way the athletes go the school goes.
The 2011 recipient of the ―Dr. Richard Raymond Public Health Champion
Award‖ was awarded to Kate Kunz, with the SAFE KIDS Chapter of North
Central Nebraska.
Kate represents the definition of a public health champion through her
work of keeping children
safe. She was active in
bringing a SAFE KIDS
Chapter to north-central
Nebraska and remains
strong in her coordination of
the chapter for the people
in Boyd, Holt and Rock
Counties. Through her
work and leadership, Kate
brings greater awareness in
keeping children safe by
bringing local community
partners together, including
the medical community,
community action agencies,
law enforcement, schools, the health department and many, many of our local
businesses. She coordinates the annual SAFE KIDS Health Fair that hundreds
of children participate in.
Kate is one of few instructors for the State of Nebraska Child Passenger
Safety Program and has been influential in the certification process of child
passenger safety technicians from around our State. Kate coordinates a
monthly SAFE KIDS Child Passenger Inspection Station in the community of
O’Neill. Car Seat Check events are
held once a year in the communities
of: Atkinson, Bassett, Burwell,
Spencer and Valentine. Her compassion
and professionalism encourage
parents of young children to rest assured
of their knowledge and skills in
transporting their children safely in a
motor vehicle.
Congratulations and thank you Kate,
for all that you do in safety and prevention
for the health of the public.
Stuart Lady Broncos vs Niobrara-Verdigre
The Stuart Lady Broncos opened their season at home against the Cougars of
Niobrara-Verdigre. The opening quarter saw a combination of rust and 1 st game
jitters. The Lady Cougar press created problems for the offense, and gave the visitors
some easy baskets. At the end of the 1 st quarter, the score was 17-5 Cougars.
In the 2 nd Quarter the Lady Bronco defense finally found their legs and held the
Cougars to 4 points while scoring 9 of their own. At one point the girls had cut the
deficit to 3 points. At halftime, the score was 21-14 Cougars.
The second half was a see-saw battle as the Lady Broncos twice cut the deficit
to 2 points, but could not solve their poor shooting. Monica Vogel made a driving 3point
play and Brittany Hanzlik added a 4-point play in the final 2 minutes of the
game, but at the buzzer the Lady Broncos fell by a final of 47-40.
Our next game is Friday December 9 th , at Taylor, NE against the Twin Loup
Wolves.
In the Junior Varsity game, the young Lady
Broncos saw their first action of the year. Throughout
the course of the 3-quarter game, the Lady
Cougars were able to pressure the Broncos into
making several mistakes. Combine that with the
jitters of playing in the first game of the year, and
our failure to make some shots in close, the more
experienced Cougars were able to build a small
lead and come away with a 28-19 victory.
Lady Broncos Compete at Spartan Shootout
Nine JV Lady Bronco basketball players motored to Spencer on Saturday,
December 3 rd to participate in the Spartan Shootout. In the first round game,
the Lady Broncos were matched up against the Lady Spartans of West Boyd.
The first half of this game was low scoring as both teams were a little nervous.
The Lady Broncos had good looks at the basket but we were only able to
get three shots, 1 three pointer and two 2 pointers, to fall through the hoop to
make the halftime score: Lady Broncos 7 Lady Spartans 8
The offense in the second half did not get any better for the young cagers
as we were only able to score a total of 8 points. The Lady Spartan were able
to take advantage of our turnovers and put 23 points on the scoreboard to
make the final score: Lady Broncos 15 Lady Spartans 31.
I felt we were not comfortable with our offense and or our defense as we
found ourselves out of position and out of rotation. We changed our offense
and our defensive rotation before the second game, which proved to be a better
fit for our players.
In the second game, we battled the Chamber/Wheeler Central Lady Renegades.
The first quarter ended in a tie score with 7 points a piece. In the second
quarter, the Lady Broncos put an additional 14 points on the scoreboard
as our outside and inside game was working well.
Third quarter was not a good quarter for the Lady Broncos as we could
only muster 3 points. Turnovers and foul trouble plagued the girls in this quarter,
which allowed the Lady Renegades to score 14 points to make the score at
the end of the third quarter: Lady
Broncos 24 Lady Renegades 29
In the fourth quarter, the Lady
Broncos battled back to tie the score
and then it was a back and forth ballgame
until the buzzer. The score was
tied at 34 and the Lady Renegades
had control of the ball with less than a
minute to play. The Lady Bronco’s
defense denied their opponent from
taking the shot they wanted, so the
Lady Renegades kicked the ball to the
outside and they made a 3 point basket
with 12 seconds left in the game.
10
Mitchell. He played out in the dining
room while we had lunch. Then at 2:30
we had Ice Cream Thursday with
Frank Murphy.
On Friday, December 2nd, Mass
was held at 10:00 with Fr. Luke. Then
at 11:00 we had kitchen crew where
we peeled cucumbers and potatoes.
Then at 4:30 we had balloons.
On Saturday, December 3 rd , we
had Coffee Klache and then at 2:00
we had our Memorial Service and
Open House. We enjoyed punch,
sandwiches, little cheesecakes and
cakes and other goodies at the Open
House.
Spartan Shootout—(Continued from page 10)
The Lady Broncos threw the ball in and came down the court as timeout was
called with 5 seconds left. A three point play was drawn on the clipboard and
we were able to get a 3 point shot off, but it went long. We were able to get
the offensive rebound and put it back up for 2 points as the buzzer sounded
making the final score: Lady Broncos 36 Lady Renegades 37.
We played much better in this game on both sides of the ball. I was
proud of how the girls were able to battle back in the fourth quarter to tie the
game and to give themselves a chance to send the game into overtime. The
downside of this game was our free-throw shooting as we missed all ten. We
will need to work on our free-throw shooting at practice as we missed our 4
free throws in the first game as well.
The next JV game is this coming Friday as we will be traveling to Taylor
to play the cooperative program of Taylor and Sargent, which is called Twin
Loop. Come out and cheer on the Lady Broncos!!
Opens With Wins
The boys basketball team at Stuart
got the season started with a pair of
wins in JV and Varsity action on December
1 st . The team was in action
against the Cougars of Niobrara-
Verdigre. In JV action, the team
cruised to a 30-14 victory in three quarters
of action. Mitchell Dvorak led the
Broncos with 11 points.
In the varsity game, the Broncos
struggled to find their offensive rhythm,
and consequentially, had to rely on their
defense. Although it was not pretty at
times, the team ended up with a 32-25
victory. Ryan Larabee led the Broncos
with 11 points. The next action for the
team is on Friday, as the team travels
to Taylor to take on Twin Loup. Complete
Young Lady Broncos Capture
Lady Bulldogs
On December 5 th , the young Lady Broncos
hosted the young Lady Bulldogs of Ainsworth.
The first game of the nights was the 7 th grade
game. We started this game a little slow, and
we knew we had to change the pace of the
game. We applied full court pressure, which
proved to be a good move for the Lady Broncos,
as we were able to force them to make bad
passes and create more scoring opportunities for
us. This was the first game we have pressed
the ball with these 7 th graders and I liked what
these young athletes could do on the court. At
the end of the 1 st half, the Lady Broncos held a
14 to 5 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.
We backed off of the press during the second
half and worked on half-court defense. We were
still able to get turnovers to limit the number of
shots the Lady Bulldogs were able to take in the
third and fourth quarter. Harlee Fischer had the
hot shooting hand as she made four 3-pointers in
the game. The Lady Broncos tacked on 12 more
points in the second half to make the final score:
Lady Broncos 26 Lady Bulldogs 8. Scorers:
Harlee Fischer – 18 points; Alison Stracke – 2
points; Rachel Kaup – 6 points; and Bethany Alder
– 1 point.
In the second game, the Ainsworth 8 th graders
were tall and they could run up and down the
court very quickly The first quarter started out
with the Lady Broncos applying full court pressure
to take a 14 to 2 lead. The turnovers the full
court press caused gave the Lady Broncos some
easy baskets, but we also missed a lot of layups,
otherwise the score would have had a larger difference.
In the second quarter, we still applied full
court pressure and threw in 13 more points to the
Lady Bulldogs 5 points. Midway through the
quarter, we backed off of the full court pressure
and picked them up at half court. We were able
to rotate some of the 7 th graders into the game to
give our 8 th graders a much needed rest. The
halftime score had the Lady Broncos in the lead
by a score of 27 to 9.
The third quarter was the highest scoring for
the Lady Broncos as we tacked on 16 more
points. We tried a different half court trap with
the girls and we went to our 1-4 High offense as
the Lady Bulldogs were playing us in a man defense.
The Lady Broncos were able to extend
their lead by 24 points at the end of the third
quarter.
In the fourth quarter, we were able rotate
players in and out of the game. Our 7 th graders
have not run the 8 th grade offense so these girls
were learning as we were playing. The deficit
was too much for the Lady Bulldogs to overcome
We played aggressive and we hustled at all times. If the girls
continue to be willing to play unselfish, play aggressive and keep
attacking, great things will continue to happen for them. I am very
proud of their efforts up to this point in their season. We will be
playing on December 16 th at Lynch with game time set for 3:30 p.m.
Good to the girls in their upcoming games!
