From the PresidentThe Marchon WashingtonOn August 28, 1963, an estimated 250,000 people converged on Washington,dC, to take part in the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. itwas a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement: a huge and peacefuldemonstration for racial and economic equality. Capped by the rev. martinLuther King, Jr.’s “i Have a dream” speech, the march helped usher in sweepingcivil rights legislation and a sea change in public opinion.WGBH is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the march with a series ofprograms and resources on television, radio and the Web. Look for coveragethroughout August, culminating in 24 hours of special programming startingtuesday evening,August 27, with thepremiere of TheMarch, a rivetingnew televisiondocumentary thattakes a fresh looknot only at theunfolding eventsand key individualsinvolved in thishistoric moment, but also the behind-the-scenes conflict between thosesupporting and opposing it (page 18, with related programming on the Worldchannel, page 22).Our radio services pick up the baton Wednesday, August 28, when89.7 WGBH Boston Public radio shares the stories behind the story (page 26),including a fascinating bit of WGBH history: eight years before nPr hit theairwaves, WGBH was one of a small group of public radio stations there tobroadcast the march. Back in our Boston studios, the quarter-inch tape wasrolling, recording speeches delivered by dr. King and John Lewis of thestudent nonviolent Coordinating Committee (snCC), music performed by avery young Bob dylan and Joan Baez, and much more—15 hours in all.in 2011, with grant funding, WGBH was able to digitize those fragile tapes(the only ones in existence!). those recordings are part of WGBH’s extensivemedia archives, and just one of many treasures we are excited to preserveand share (wgbh.org/march), with more to come. Our celebration of the 50th anniversary of the march ends on an uplifting, lyrical note with 99.5 WCrB Classical new england’s A Beautiful Symphony ofBrotherhood, a live broadcast of the Boston Landmark Orchestra’s August 28outdoor concert at the Hatch shell on Boston’s esplanade, featuring evocativemusic, stirring words and special guests (page 27).Capturing powerful and important moments, offering diverse perspectivesand inspiration…it all happens thanks to your generous ongoingsupport of WGBH.Jon AbbottPublic Affairs on 44WGBH 44’s public affairs lineup kicks offFriday nights at 8pm with WashingtonWeek with Gwen Ifill.Where to tune inTVdigital broadcastComcastFiOsrCnCoxCharterWGBH 2 2.1 2 2 2 2 2 284WGBH 2 HD 2.1 802 502 602 1002 782 819WGBH 44 44.1 16 44 14 804 21 n/aWGBH 44 HD 44.1 801 544 n/a n/a n/a n/aWorld 2.2 209 473 94 807 222 n/aCreate 44.3 237 474 95 805 223 n/a’GBH Kids 44.4 217 472 93 n/a 153 n/aBoston Kids & n/a 22 n/a 3 n/a n/a n/aFamily (Boston only)Channel numbers and availability may vary by community; contact your provider formore information.WGBH is now working with new Hampshire Public television (nHPtv). if you watchnew Hampshire public television, and if you also are a Comcast subscriber, please visitnhptv.org/updates to learn about some changes.Comcast subscribers can access selected WGBH programs on WGBH On demand.Go to Comcast 1, choose Get Local, then Local Networks.
