From the PresidentThe Choice Is YoursFor years, Barack Obama and mitt romney havebeen telling us their stories. this month, Frontline’saward-winning political team pushes past their carefullycrafted narratives to deliver a fresh and in-depth look at the presidentialcandidates—examining their lives, choices and politics (page 10).“the oldest rule is that we never talk to the candidates,” explainsFrontline’s Michael Kirk, who is producing The Choice for a third time (2000,2008, 2012). “they’ve had plenty of time and spent plenty of money writingtheir own versions of the story. instead, we talk topeople from their public and private lives, peoplewho’ve worked closely with them, experts who’vewritten books about them and experienced journalistswho’ve covered them for years.”during the past year, michael and the WGBHFrontline team crisscrossed the country, conductingmore than 100 lengthy interviews and miningarchives before returning to WGBH to sift throughmore than 300 hours of videotape and information. What were they looking for? “First you find out everything you can aboutwho they are now,” michael says. “then you go backwards. We’re interested inthose pivotal moments in their lives, where they could have gone one way orthe other. then we look back at their lives to find out the things that informedthose moments.”You won’t find this kind of television reporting anywhere else. “most ofjournalism is after the ‘gotcha,’ the quick hit that knocks a candidate sidewaysfor a while,” michael says. “What we aim to do is bigger: it’s more thoroughand hopefully more thoughtful, connecting dots in the candidates’ past andexperience.”The Choice 2012 continues online (pbs.org/frontline), with artifactsfrom the candidates’ lives and long-form video interviews with the peoplewho know them best.in-depth, independent journalism that millions of Americans count onevery day, all made possible by your generous annual support. thanks formaking WGBH your choice!Jon AbbottExplore! 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public RadioWhat’s Your Issue?By Phil Redo, Managing Director89.7 WGBH, Boston Public RadioJobs, jobs jobs! It’s the biggest single issue driving theapproaching election. According to every public opinionpoll, it is clearly #1. Yet, job creation often is the resultof how other issues are identified and addressed, including health care, public transportation, federalspending, deficits, education and foreign policy. We’ll be taking on these issues and more in ournew 89.7 series, 30 Issues in 30 Days. With this initiative, which kicked off at the end of September, we are seeking a powerfulway to seriously approach the nuances of the many issues voters are confrontedwith every election cycle. So often the media debate is reduced to“the economy” or “foreign policy,” and yet so many other issues are criticallyimportant in their own right and impact those larger issues in less obviousways. We want to reveal those ways to you.The idea is to take on a single issue each day and present it in differentways throughout the course of our programs. Our new daily local talk show,Boston Public Radio, will dedicate a full segment to that day’s issue. Our goalis not only to explore substantive aspects of major national issues but also toidentify how they are linked to legislative and public policy decisions thatwill be impacted by the November elections. If it’s a local issue, we’ll attemptto do the same. This series is just one part of our Focus Coverage of Election2012 (learn more about our radio coverage on page 23).Which issues will we cover? Because there are so many issues worthyof consideration, we have reached out to you to solicit your thoughts andsuggestions. If you would like to participate, go to wgbhnews.org andclick on “30 Issues in 30 Days.”Credit for this concept goes to public radio station WNYC in New York, which originated this idea many years ago on The Brian Lehrer Show. There’san old adage that amateurs borrow and professionals steal! So, I happilyconfess to being a professional. And I hope for you, that is not an issue.Tune in each day for a new issue on 89.7 WGBH, and for additional newsand features that reach beyond the headlines in our Focus Coverage ofElection 2012. Classical New England Cartoon FestivalCome One, Come All!By Laura CarloClassical new england Program HostOctober 27th is a day that i’ve had circledon my calendar for months now: the dayof Classical new england’s 14th annualClassical Cartoon Festival!sure, your kids will just thinkthey’re going to see WarnerBrothers cartoons (with clever classically inspiredscores) that their parents and grandparentsenjoyed so much when they were young. Butthat’s just the start: for an entire day, all ofBoston’s venerable symphony Hall is devoted tomusic, movies, kids, families and fun. threestages are set up to present programs especiallytailored to capture the attention—and spark theimagination—of children being introduced to theincredible world of music. We’ll hear young flutists, cellists, violinists, marimba players, choruses and full youth orchestras playing classical music, lookingvery professional and having fun. We’ll also have a musical instrument“petting zoo” where children can try out any instrument thatcatches their fancy. Here’s a day where kids can influence each other for the good, like when they see others in their age group doing something funand creative. We’ve heard from many parents over the years who havetold us that just one day at the Classical Cartoon Festival promptedtheir children to ask for music lessons. Who knows, maybe thoselessons will turn them into moderndaymozarts! But even if they don’t,there are countless studies thatdemonstrate how learning musictrains the brain for better spatialtesting, reasoning and memory. Here’s one example: one report bythe College Board revealed thatcollege-bound seniors with schoolmusic experience scored 57 pointshigher on the verbal portion oftheir sAts and 41 points higherin math than those without anymusic instruction!so do something smart: comeone, come all to a day of familyfun with classic cartoons, cartooncharacters and music—just for thejoy of it. even if you’ve come to theClassical Cartoon Festival before, there always are new things to see anddo. Bring your children or grandchildren . . . or just come alone and havea ball like when you were a kid. WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR StationMeet the Cape’s Morning ManBy Mindy ToddWCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and HostWhile most of us still are asleep, Dan Tritle hits the road—the bike pathto be more precise—and heads to work. His routine is the same no matterthe season.“I hit the bike path usually about 4:30am,” says the host of MorningEdition on WCAI. “It’s just me, the moonlight over Vineyard Sound and theoccasional rabbit. It’s a marvelous way of getting energized for the day.”Dan has been the voice of Morning Edition on the Cape since the firstdays of WCAI. Hailing from Seattle, he ventured east after years of reportingfor commercial radio, public radio and the Associated Press.Dan has a fond memory of arriving in Woods Hole on the eve ofMemorial Day weekend in May of 2000 and carrying the WNAN (WCAI’sNantucket station) banner in the Woods Hole Memorial Day Parade, which isfamous for having more people marching in it than watching it. “That oneevent endeared me to the village, and I found a new home on Cape Cod,”he says.WNAN had gone on the airin March, and in September, WCAIwent live. “I still remember thethrill of pressing the button thatenabled us to go on the air with Morning Edition,” he recalls.Dan is a busy guy. In addition to hosting, he is our station’s productioncoordinator. “I love our small staff and the friendly fellowship that we’vecreated amongst ourselves,” he says. “We help each other out whenever wecan. I’m proud of the work we do at WCAI.”When he’s not in the studio, you’ll find Dan bicycling or running theroads in and around Falmouth and Woods Hole. Or you might find himperforming a play at the Cotuit Center for the Arts.Dan also is a big science-fiction fan, and an expert on all things Star Trekand Twilight Zone. He even tackled Star Trek trivia during a WCAI pledge drivea few years ago, proving the Cape has its share of Trekkies. “It brought in anamazing amount of listener contributions,” he says.Morning Edition airs on WCAI weekdays at 6am.What’s on WCAIOnline: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 BostonMonday–Friday5am BBC World Update6am Morning Edition9:30 The Point10am The Diane Rehm Show12pm The Takeaway1pm Fresh Air2pm Talk of the Nation4pm All Things Considered6pm The World7pm Marketplace7:30 The Point8pm Fresh Air9pm PBS NewsHour10pm The Story11pm News from the BBC12am News & Notes5am7am8am10am11am12pm1pm2pm3pm4pm5pm6pm8pm9pm10pm12amSaturdayBBC World Service NewsLiving on EarthWeekend EditionCar TalkWait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!This American LifeThe Moth/RadiolabSplendid TableBill MoyersOn the MediaWeekend All Things ConsideredA Prairie Home CompanionSays You!Selected ShortsAmerican RoutesAfropop WorldwideSunday5am BBC World Service News7am On Being8am Weekend Edition10am Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!11am Bob Edwards Weekend12pm America’s Test Kitchen Radio1pm A Prairie Home Companion3pm To the Best of Our Knowledge4pm Studio 3605pm Weekend All Things Considered6pm This American Life7pm Arts & Ideas11pm On the Media12am Le Show with Harry ShearerEditor Karen HartleyContributors Ron Bachman, Maria Bruno Ruiz,Laura Carlo, Jake Messier, Phil Redo, Susan Reed,Ben Roe, Matt Roy, Mindy ToddDesigner Meryl Brenner, Tong-Mei ChanPhoto Research Julie Ecker, Lynn MasonAssociate Creative Director Alison KennedyDirector, Constituent CommunicationsCynthia BronerAssociate Director Susan ReedDirector of Operations Brian DonovanExplore!, October 2012: Volume 22, Number 10, (ISSN 2152-7458) (USPS 0008 -188).
