Classical New EnglandPublic Radio Music MonthBy Benjamin K. RoeManaging Director for Classical ServicesThroughout the month of April, public radio stationsacross the nation are celebrating the strong andunique partnership that exists between public radioand music. While our own listeners know firsthandthe critical role that WGBH and Classical NewEngland have played in our local music culture andindustry—a six-decade tradition of broadcastinglive Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts is just oneexample—that relationship often has been overlookedin the larger community. Most often, when people think of the phrasepublic radio, their first association is with our signaturenews and information programs. But in fact, more than 40 percent of nationwide listening topublic radio is for music programming, such as the kind that Classical NewEngland provides on a round-the-clock basis on-air and online. And increasingly, public radio has become the only home for more and more genres ofmusic. Here in Boston, with a music scene that rivals any in the nation, theconnection between public radio stations and the club, concert hall and conservatoryis absolutely vital. It was out of that need that Public Radio Music Month was born, andClassical New England is proud to be part of a nationwide initiative that connectslocal public radio stations, artists and audiences in communities acrossthe US. All throughout the nation a scan of your [public] radio dial thismonth will reveal stations and their partners featuring high-profile musicinterviews, one-of-a-kind performances, special downloads, exclusive onlinecontent and much more.Closer to home, we’re hoping you keep your presets on 99.5 on the dialand classicalnewengland.org on your device, for some truly memorableprogramming coming your way, including the following performances:April 3: The Tokyo Quartet’s “Farewell to Boston” ConcertAfter 43 years of performing together, one of the nation’s most acclaimedstring quartets is saying goodbye to the concert stage. Together in SongSpring is a season for singing and Classical New England is embracing themoment with a brand-new program: Together in Song.“There’s a reason choral music has been called ‘The First Art,’” notes managingdirector Benjamin Roe. “The simple act of joining voices together—be it in devotion, in sorrow or in celebration—is one of the oldest impulsesof the human community, and has given rise to some of the greatest worksof Western art. But at the same time, programs like Glee on television andthe phenomenal rise of a cappella groups on collegecampuses reflects the continuing popularityand vitality of choral music.”As the name implies, Together in Song will bea celebration of both the music, and of the myriadensembles and personalities who present it,expertly woven together by new host AnthonyTrecek-King, artistic director of the BostonChildren’s Chorus. The versatility of Trecek-King’srepertoire made him the right choice to bringchoral music to a broad audience, Roe says. “I wasvery impressed by how Anthony reaches out todifferent constituencies through his programming with the BCC. And I can’tthink of a better time to introduce this program than during Public RadioMusic Month (see story, opposite page), when we spotlight the vital partnershipbetween public radio stations and the musical communities they serve.”Together in Song premieres at noon on Easter Sunday, March 31, with aprogram called The Lily Blooms, a celebration of Easter that will range fromthe plain-spoken and affecting hymnody of Colonial composer WilliamBillings, to the modern sounds of a children’s chorus.Other programs for Together in Song this month:April 7: Amazing GraceChoral expressions of spiritual gratitude and wonder.April 14: Gloria!A 25th-anniversary salute to Gloria Dei Cantores, a true “choral community”based in a Benedictine cloister on Cape Cod.April 21: Special EffectsUsing voices to imitate familiar, and create new, sounds.HANDELJEPHTHAMAY 3 & 5, 2013 AT SYMPHONY HALLPHOTO: FLICKR/ANCIENT ARTADVERTISEMENTSApril 28: The Whitacre WaveAn exploration of the phenomenal appeal of Eric Whitacre and other contemporaryAmerican composers, particularly among high school choruses.Featuring a Fraser Performance Studio appearance by the Eric WhitacreSingers.Sundays at 6pmHarry Christophers, conductorRobert Murray, tenor (Jephtha)Catherine Wyn-Rogers,mezzo-soprano (Storgè)Joélle Harvey, soprano (Iphis)William Purefoy, countertenor (Hamor)Period InstrumentOrchestra and ChorusConsidered one of the finest Handelians inthe world, Harry Christophers brings Jephthato Symphony Hall audiences for the first timesince 1867. WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR StationMeet You at the PubBy Mindy Todd, WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and HostCape Cod and the Islands can be quiet in the winter months, but back in2004, we thought of a cure for cabin fever: WCAI Pub Nights! The nights are opportunities for listeners to meet our on-air hosts andcontributors as well as our off-air staff, while also getting to know otherpublic radio listeners. We never expected Pub Nights to become annual events, but when wetook a year off, so many listeners requested we bring them back that we feltwe had to oblige. We typically visit half a dozen pubs throughout our listeningarea to enjoy evenings of refreshments and conversation.“People are always so happy to see us and to talk aboutthe local issues they care about,” says Sean Corcoran, WCAI’ssenior reporter and editor. “People want to know how to getin touch and share story ideas, so I hand them my card andtell them to simply give me a call anytime they want to talk.”Listeners appreciate the chance to connect with the peoplethey turn to every day on the radio. “I just have to put aface with your voices,” a listener commented at a recent Pub Night. Anotherlistener said, “It’s great to have the opportunity to give ideas to you guys andto find out how you go about selecting your programs and topics.”Listeners aren’t the only ones who enjoy the evenings. “We’re committedto being the best local radio service we can be, and people appreciate it,”Corcoran says. “It’s inspiring to hear people comment on your work andthank you for what you do.”The remaining Pub Nights in 2013 are April 18 in Wellfleet (locationto be determined), April 25 at the Nantucket Hotel, and May 16 at theWaterfront Grill in New Bedford.
