Classical New EnglandHappy Birthday, Bach!By Benjamin K. RoeManaging Director of Classical ServicesBach opens a vista to the universe. After experiencing him, peoplefeel there is meaning to life after all.—Helmut WachaPerhaps you’ve noticed that the world of classical music is filled withmilestones: premieres, passings, debuts, and most especially, birthdayanniversaries. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz almost single-handedlyestablished December 16 (Beethoven’s Birthday) as an unofficial holiday, with Schroeder-the-toy-piano-virtuoso as Celebrator-in-Chief. TheAmadeus effect similarly made January 27th (Mozart’s Birthday) a redletterday on the classical music calendar. And on March 21 we celebrate the birthday of the man fellowcomposer Max Reger described as “the beginning and end of all music”:Johann Sebastian Bach. Universal, to be sure, but with a very specialresonance in the Hub of the Universe.Boston, after all, is where the Handeland Haydn Society presented theAmerican premiere of the St. MatthewPassion in 1879—and where HarryChristophers and company will againpresent Bach’s monumental work laterthis month. From his perch at HarvardUniversity, Christoph Wolff is arguablythe world’s foremost scholar on themusic, life and times of Bach. TheCantata Singers were founded in 1964Portrait of Bach by Elias Gottlob Haussmanwith the express purpose of performing the neglected works of Bach.Under the musical direction of Bálint Karosi, winner of the 16thInternational Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, Boston’s FirstLutheran Church will present a special Bach Birthday program onMarch 24 with the Boston chapter of the American Guild of Organists. And, lest we forget, presenting—and broadcasting!—the cantatasof Johann Sebastian Bach has been a Boston tradition for more than40 years, thanks to the pioneering efforts of the late conductor CraigSmith, who founded the Emmanuel Music ensemble to perform thecomplete cycle of Bach’s 200-plus cantatas in the liturgical setting andcalendar for which they were written. And at virtually the same timeWGBH launched a Sunday morning tradition of broadcasting Bachcantatas on Morning pro musica. In 2012, both traditions are going strong. Now under the dynamicleadership of Ryan Turner, Emmanuel Music has begun its third Bachcantatacycle, the core of an ambitious music series that ranges frombaroque to contemporary in large and small ensembles throughoutthe week. And on Classical New England, we provide you an entire Sundaymorning of inspiring and beautiful music written from Bach’s time andbefore. The Bach Hour with Brian McCreath offers you a weekly gatewayinto the world of Bach’s sacred and secular works, followed by Baroquein Boston with Laura Carlo, which journeys into the richness of Boston’searly music scene. Listen to both programs all month long for celebrationsand explorations of the world of Bach, and hopefully you’ll findthe same inspirations as did Claude Debussy: “…on each page we discoverthings which we thought were born only yesterday, from delightful arabesquesto an overflowing of religious feeling greater than anything we have sincediscovered. And in his works we will search in vain for anything the leastlacking in good taste.”What’s on Classical New England5am10am2pm7pm9pmMonday–FridayClassical Music with Laura CarloClassical Music with Alan McLellan12pm Café EuropaClassical Music with Cathy FullerThursdays: 4pm BSO PreviewFridays: 4pm Drive Time LivePerformance Today with Fred ChildClassical Music with James David JacobsFridays: Concierto6am7am12pm5pm6pm7pm10pmClassical Online Channelsclassicalnewengland.orgKids Classical, Boston Early Music and BSO RadioSaturdayIn Performance with Cathy FullerClassical Music with James DavidJacobs9am Classics For KidsClassical Music with Ray BrownFrom the TopNew England Summer FestivalsBoston Symphony OrchestraBSO on RecordOnline: classicalnewengland.orgOn-air: 99.5 Boston-NH | 89.7 HD2 Boston | 96.3 Beacon Hill89.5 Nantucket | 88.7 Providence6am7am11am12pm1pm3pm5pm6pm6:30pm10pm11pmSundayThe Bach Hour with Brian McCreathBaroque in Boston with Laura CarloLive from FraserNew England Summer FestivalsBoston Symphony OrchestraSunday ConcertThe Bach Hour with Brian McCreathArias & Barcarolles with Cathy FullerWorld of OperaLive from FraserPipedreamsClassical New England is made possible by your contributionsto the Classical Founders Fund.24 Schedules, program info, playlists: classicalnewengland.org

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public radioThe Political ViewBy Phil redo, managing director89.7 WGBH, Boston Public radiotoward the end of 2011, as theelection cycle morphed from ending punditry into actual votecounting, WGBH radio wrestled withhow we might best offer thoughtful,never-unique and fresh coverage.more than the presidentialcontest, 2012 also will feature a Us senate racein massachusetts with national interest, and new contestswithin redrawn congressional districts—electoral stakes that will influencevoter interest and turnout.so-called “horse race” coverage, while often entertaining, is rarelyilluminating. so, WGBH has decided to place a greater emphasis on specificissues and to examine motivations driving the issues, including the languageused by the media, voters and candidates. As an example, we spent 10 mornings, beginning the day of the iowaCaucuses, interviewing leading local and national thinkers. We asked GregGoodale of northeastern University to review some of the language of thecampaign and the significance of specific words and phrases. We discussedthe impact of religion with trinity College professor mark silk, and emoryUniversity professor drew Westen told us about the psychology involved inmotivating people to vote.As always, we hoped to usestorytelling to get to the heartof a subject and we returned tothe rich WGBH Archives on January 10to explore the history of the newHampshire primary. We shared withour listeners the voices of our politicalpast—tennessee senator estesKefauver and Presidents Harry s. truman,John F. Kennedy and George H.W. Bush—putting into historical context results that were only hours away.Among the more interesting experiments we tried was simulcasting theefforts of our colleagues: first from iowa on Caucus night with iowa Publicradio and a week later with coverage from new Hampshire Public radio.these two outstanding statewide networks offered our own listeners ateam of reporters well versed in the subtleties of their respective states. We are proud to have offered their talents and we hope, if you heard it, youagree their insight and local knowledge made for richer coverage. As the calendar moves along, we will look for equivalent opportunities.stay tuned. it should be quite a year!Listen to a sampling of the stories mentioned in this article, and read or listento reports on the latest election coverage at wgbhnews.orgWhat’s on 89.7 WGBHOnline: wgbh.org/radioOn-air: 89.7 Hd1 Boston5am6am7am7:50am9am10am12pm1pm2pm3pm4pm6pm7pm8pm12amMonday–FridayBBC World UpdateThe TakeawayMorning Edition/Marketplace MorningThe Xconomy Report (Fri)The TakeawayThe Diane Rehm ShowThe Emily Rooney ShowThe Callie Crossley ShowFresh AirThe WorldAll Things ConsideredThe WorldPBS NewsHourJazz on WGBH with Eric Jackson/Jazz on WGBH with Steve Schwartz (Fri)Jazz with Bob ParlochaSaturday6am Living on Earth7am Innovation Hub8am Weekend Edition10am Studio 36011am This American Life12pm Says You!1pm Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me!2pm The Moth/Radio Lab3pm A Celtic Sojourn6pm A Prairie Home Companion8pm Says You!9pm Selected Shorts10pm JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater11pm Jazz with Bob Parlocha6am7am8am10am11am12pm2pm3pm4pm5pm6pm7pm8pm10pm11pm12amSundayOn the MediaBeingWeekend EditionBob Edwards WeekendWait Wait…Don't Tell Me!A Prairie Home CompanionSays You!America's Test Kitchen RadioMarketplace MoneyAll Things ConsideredHumankindJazz DecadesArts & IdeasInnovation HubEric’s Artist SpotlightJazz with Bob Parlochanews programs on 89.7 WGBH are made possible by your contributions to the Independent Journalism Fund.26 schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/897

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR StationWCAI’s A Life RememberedEveryone’s life has a story and often that story is summed up in a fewsentences in an obituary buried at the back of the newspaper. But there is alot more worth knowing about people, and WCAI reporter Sean Corcoranrecently launched A Life Remembered to present more detailed portraits oflocal community members who have passed away and to celebrate individualswhose lives made an impact on their family and neighbors. The new series premiered in January and airs the first Monday of eachmonth during Morning Edition and All Things Considered on WCAI. The firstprofile remembers Alice Lopez, 49, the Mashpee tribe’s housing directorwho envisioned an affordable housing community called “WampanoagVillage,” and secured enough grant money to buy the wooded acreage inMashpee where 52 homes will be built.Lopez was a passionate advocate for the Cape’s often overlooked homelesspopulation and wanted to provide a permanent home for tribe memberswho now move from house to house, sleeping on couches and in tents inpeople’s yards.Corcoran interviewed Lopez’s mother, her sister, and her friend and fellow tribemember, Myrna Nuey. You hear the emotionin Nuey’s voice when she talks about Lopez.“She was the essence of what I call a‘native woman.’ The purity that she had inher heart for her people goes beyond wordsand goes beyond anyone’s expectations ofwhat a native woman is all about,” Nueysays, explaining Lopez’s lifelong pride in herheritage and culture. “To come into her presenceand be with her often was an honor.”If you missed the January or February edition of A Life Remembered, listen online at capeandislands.org. And you’re invited to suggest peopleyou may know who have recently died and have a story to be told.
