89.7 WGBH, Boston Public RadioWhat’s Your Issue?By Phil Redo, Managing Director89.7 WGBH, Boston Public RadioJobs, jobs jobs! It’s the biggest single issue driving theapproaching election. According to every public opinionpoll, it is clearly #1. Yet, job creation often is the resultof how other issues are identified and addressed, including health care, public transportation, federalspending, deficits, education and foreign policy. We’ll be taking on these issues and more in ournew 89.7 series, 30 Issues in 30 Days. With this initiative, which kicked off at the end of September, we are seeking a powerfulway to seriously approach the nuances of the many issues voters are confrontedwith every election cycle. So often the media debate is reduced to“the economy” or “foreign policy,” and yet so many other issues are criticallyimportant in their own right and impact those larger issues in less obviousways. We want to reveal those ways to you.The idea is to take on a single issue each day and present it in differentways throughout the course of our programs. Our new daily local talk show,Boston Public Radio, will dedicate a full segment to that day’s issue. Our goalis not only to explore substantive aspects of major national issues but also toidentify how they are linked to legislative and public policy decisions thatwill be impacted by the November elections. If it’s a local issue, we’ll attemptto do the same. This series is just one part of our Focus Coverage of Election2012 (learn more about our radio coverage on page 23).Which issues will we cover? Because there are so many issues worthyof consideration, we have reached out to you to solicit your thoughts andsuggestions. If you would like to participate, go to wgbhnews.org andclick on “30 Issues in 30 Days.”Credit for this concept goes to public radio station WNYC in New York, which originated this idea many years ago on The Brian Lehrer Show. There’san old adage that amateurs borrow and professionals steal! So, I happilyconfess to being a professional. And I hope for you, that is not an issue.Tune in each day for a new issue on 89.7 WGBH, and for additional newsand features that reach beyond the headlines in our Focus Coverage ofElection 2012.
