From the PresidentThe Choice Is YoursFor years, Barack Obama and mitt romney havebeen telling us their stories. this month, Frontline’saward-winning political team pushes past their carefullycrafted narratives to deliver a fresh and in-depth look at the presidentialcandidates—examining their lives, choices and politics (page 10).“the oldest rule is that we never talk to the candidates,” explainsFrontline’s Michael Kirk, who is producing The Choice for a third time (2000,2008, 2012). “they’ve had plenty of time and spent plenty of money writingtheir own versions of the story. instead, we talk topeople from their public and private lives, peoplewho’ve worked closely with them, experts who’vewritten books about them and experienced journalistswho’ve covered them for years.”during the past year, michael and the WGBHFrontline team crisscrossed the country, conductingmore than 100 lengthy interviews and miningarchives before returning to WGBH to sift throughmore than 300 hours of videotape and information. What were they looking for? “First you find out everything you can aboutwho they are now,” michael says. “then you go backwards. We’re interested inthose pivotal moments in their lives, where they could have gone one way orthe other. then we look back at their lives to find out the things that informedthose moments.”You won’t find this kind of television reporting anywhere else. “most ofjournalism is after the ‘gotcha,’ the quick hit that knocks a candidate sidewaysfor a while,” michael says. “What we aim to do is bigger: it’s more thoroughand hopefully more thoughtful, connecting dots in the candidates’ past andexperience.”The Choice 2012 continues online (pbs.org/frontline), with artifactsfrom the candidates’ lives and long-form video interviews with the peoplewho know them best.in-depth, independent journalism that millions of Americans count onevery day, all made possible by your generous annual support. thanks formaking WGBH your choice!Jon AbbottExplore!
