THE ART OF ASCENDINGThe difference between an Ascender and a Rope Grab is a matter of design.Ascenders can generally be placed on a rope with one hand, whereas rope grabs usuallyincorporate some sort of shell with a movable or re-movable cam that is less likely to beinadvertently removed from the rope. Some ascenders have handles incorporated into themwhile others do not.While an ascender is usually a more expedient tool for climbing a rope, a rope grab is usuallyconsidered a more secure form of attachment to the rope. Not all rope grabs are madethe same, however. Some are designed to withstand a shock load (such as fall arrest ropegrabs meeting ANSI Z359.1), but most are intended for gripping a rope and holding a load(these may be certified to NFPA 1983).To determine the best choice of rope grab or ascender for your application, consider howyou will use it. An ascender certified to a UIAA or NFPA L rating is usually considered sufficientfor ascending or gripping a rope with a single person load. A rope grab certified toNFPA G is more appropriate for use in systems where heavier loads are likely.
