6. Fighting stigma <strong>and</strong> discrimination<br />

Have people think about how they have been stigmatized or discriminated against in their lives due<br />

to race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, economic status, education,<br />

<strong>HIV</strong> status or other reason. Then have them write on cards how such stigma <strong>and</strong> discrimination<br />

made them feel. Collect the cards <strong>and</strong> cluster them into grounds of discrimination. Briefly discuss<br />

the effects of stigma <strong>and</strong> discrimination. Then discuss what can be done in the sports body to<br />

eliminate stigma <strong>and</strong> discrimination of any kind, including stigma <strong>and</strong> discrimination related to <strong>HIV</strong>.<br />

7. Other activities<br />

● <strong>for</strong>mally commit to creating <strong>and</strong> promoting an environment sensitive to <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> in your<br />

organization;<br />

● develop <strong>and</strong> implement a <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> in the workplace policy;<br />

● encourage <strong>and</strong> support research on stigmatization <strong>and</strong> discrimination within the sports<br />

setting, <strong>and</strong> use the findings to design actions <strong>and</strong> policies to promote openness <strong>and</strong><br />

acceptance;<br />

● involve sportsmen <strong>and</strong> women living with or affected by <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> as resource persons<br />

in your sports programs <strong>and</strong> activities;<br />

● ensure that sport coaches are <strong>AIDS</strong> competent by including <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> related issues in<br />

their coaching education;<br />

● display posters on <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>prevention</strong>;<br />

● provide basic <strong>HIV</strong> education <strong>for</strong> employees <strong>and</strong> their families;<br />

● distribute educational brochures about <strong>HIV</strong> transmission <strong>and</strong> <strong>prevention</strong>;<br />

● invite outside organizations to present or distribute <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation;<br />

● integrate <strong>HIV</strong> transmission <strong>and</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation into your day-to-day activities <strong>and</strong><br />

programmes;<br />

● familiarize yourself with <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> service organizations such as voluntary testing <strong>and</strong><br />

counselling centres, people living with <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> organizations <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> service<br />

organizations in your neighbourhood;<br />

● raise awareness so that players <strong>and</strong> communities can access services such as care <strong>and</strong> support<br />

services or mother to child <strong>HIV</strong> transmission <strong>prevention</strong> services as they become available, or<br />

hold authorities accountable if these are not available;<br />

● include articles about <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong> in your newsletter <strong>and</strong> on your internet <strong>and</strong> intranet<br />

sites; or<br />

● make condoms <strong>and</strong> lubricant available.<br />
