• Educational Awards and Bursaries
In keeping with its long-standing tradition, the Association
continued to provide academic awards to deserving top graduates of
the Singapore Maritime Academy’s maritime diploma courses, namely
the Diploma in Marine Engineering, the Diploma in Nautical Studies and
the Diploma in Maritime Transport and Technology.
One deserving student from the Nanyang Technological University
B.Sc. (Maritime Studies) also obtained the $5,000 SSA Travel bursary to
defray the costs of his study semester in Norway.
In February 2011, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore
(MPA), National Trades Union Congress’ e2i (NTUC Employment and
Employability Institute) and Workforce Development Agency (WDA)
jointly launched the new Certificate of Competency (COC) (Special
Limits) programme for training Singaporeans and Permanent residents
to work on harbor craft as deck officers. The three organizations in
partnership with SSA’s affiliated bunkering companies will collectively
contribute over $2.3 million to support the course fees and training
allowances of these trainees. In recognition of the Association’s efforts,
the SSA was presented with the NTUC 50 Model Partnership Awards
(Institutional Category) as a recognised partner along with MPA, WDA
and Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA), for the CoC (Special Limits)
Officers Programme on 21 May 2011.
• Talks & Seminars
Given the dynamic, ever-changing nature of the maritime
sector, the Association regularly organises talks and seminars
to keep its members informed and up-to-date with the latest
developments in the shipping industry by inviting distinguished
and highly-qualified speakers to share their experiences and
expertise.
These talks and seminars are very well-received as they not
only serve to update the participants with the current trends
and developments in the shipping world, but also offer an
opportunity for them to network with the shipping fraternity.
